As global temperatures rise, heat-related chronic health disorders are predicted to become more prevalent. We tested whether a single exposure to acute heat illness, using a preclinical mouse model of exertional heat stroke (EHS), can induce late-emerging health disorders that progress into chronic disease. Following EHS, mice were followed for 3 months; after two weeks of recovery, half were placed on a Western diet to determine if previous EHS exposure amplifies the negative consequences of an atherogenic diet.

Background: Prior research has shown that African American men and women are more likely to receive lower quality healthcare compared to their white counterparts, which is exacerbated in jail and prison healthcare systems.

Objective: The purpose of this study is to explore barriers and facilitators to quality healthcare among African American men and women released from Illinois State Prisons or Cook County Jail by examining their opinions and experiences with overall healthcare and cancer screening during and after incarceration.

Design: Four focus groups (n = 25 "co-researchers") were conducted to understand how formerly incarcerated African American men and women perceive and describe their experience of accessing, understanding, and utilizing healthcare during and after incarceration.

Introduction: As perinatal drug overdoses continue to rise, reliable approaches are needed to monitor overdose trends during pregnancy and postpartum. This analysis aimed to determine the sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, and negative predictive value of ICD-9/10-CM codes for drug overdose events among people in the MATernaL and Infant clinical NetworK (MAT-LINK) with medication for opioid use disorder during pregnancy.

Methods: People included in this analysis had electronic health record documentation of medication for opioid use disorder and a known pregnancy outcome from January 1, 2014, through August 31, 2021.

The first search for soft unclustered energy patterns (SUEPs) is performed using an integrated luminosity of 138  fb^{-1} of proton-proton collision data at sqrt[s]=13  TeV, collected in 2016-2018 by the CMS detector at the LHC. Such SUEPs are predicted by hidden valley models with a new, confining force with a large 't Hooft coupling. In events with boosted topologies, selected by high-threshold hadronic triggers, the multiplicity and sphericity of clustered tracks are used to reject the background from standard model quantum chromodynamics.

Study Objective: Most long coronavirus disease (long COVID) studies rely on traditional surveillance methods that miss underserved populations who use emergency departments (EDs) as their primary health care source. In medically underserved ED populations, we sought to determine (1) whether there are gaps in awareness and self-declared understanding about long COVID illness, and (2) the prevalence, impact on school/work attendance, and receipt of care for long COVID symptoms.

Methods: This study was a cross-sectional, convenience sample survey study of adult patients at 11 geographically representative US EDs from December 2022 to October 2023.

Unlabelled: To increase the achievement of negative R0 surgical margins and increase the low survival rates of pancreatic cancer, improvements in assessing tumor margins during surgical resections are needed. This can be accomplished by using pancreatic cancer-targeted fluorescence molecular imaging agents to intraoperatively detect tumor margins in real time. Because Toll-like receptor 2 (TLR2) is broadly expressed among many cancer types including pancreatic adenocarcinomas, a high-affinity TLR2-targeted fluorescence molecular imaging agent (TLR2L-800) was developed.

Objective: Oral cancer examinations seek to clinically identify early oral cancers and discover premalignancies prior to their progression to invasive cancer.

Method And Materials: A cross-sectional study was conducted between April and August 2017 to explore and quantify the diagnostic approach used by United States (US) general dental practitioners following discovery of an oral lesion suspicious for malignancy/premalignancy. US licensed general dental practitioners who were clinically active members of the US National Dental Practice-Based Research Network were eligible to participate.

Energy correlators that describe energy-weighted distances between two or three particles in a hadronic jet are measured using an event sample of sqrt[s]=13  TeV proton-proton collisions collected by the CMS experiment and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36.3  fb^{-1}. The measured distributions are consistent with the trends in the simulation that reveal two key features of the strong interaction: confinement and asymptotic freedom.

Reflectin is a cationic, block copolymeric protein that mediates the dynamic fine-tuning of color and brightness of light reflected from nanostructured Bragg reflectors in iridocyte skin cells of squids. In vivo, the neuronally activated phosphorylation of reflectin triggers its assembly, driving osmotic dehydration of the membrane-bounded Bragg lamellae containing the protein to simultaneously shrink the lamellar thickness and spacing while increasing their refractive index contrast, thus tuning the wavelength and increasing the brightness of reflectance. In vitro, we show that the reduction in repulsive net charge of the purified, recombinant reflectin-either (for the first time) by generalized anionic screening with salt or by pH titration-drives a finely tuned, precisely calibrated increase in the size of the resulting multimeric assemblies.

Disordered proteins often undergo a stimuli-responsive, disorder-to-order transition which facilitates dynamic processes that modulate the physiological activities and material properties of cells, such as strength, chemical composition, and reflectance. It remains challenging to gain rapid and spatiotemporal control over such disorder-to-order transitions, which limits the incorporation of these proteins into novel materials. The reflectin protein is a cationic, disordered protein whose assembly is responsible for dynamic color camouflage in cephalopods.

Introduction: Cardiovascular morbidity and mortality are high in people with serious mental illness (SMI). This problem is mediated, at least in part, by metabolic side effects of second-generation antipsychotics (SGAs) and by unhealthy lifestyle behaviors. We asked whether oral glucose tolerance testing (oGTT) or hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) is superior in identifying people with SMI at high cardiometabolic risk and whether this risk is shaped by mood, cognition, or lifestyle habits.

Hypothesis: Lysopalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (LysoPC) is a soluble single-chain surfactant product of the innate immune system degradation of double-chain phospholipids. LysoPC adsorption to the air-water interface in lung alveoli can be modeled using alveolar-sized bubbles of constant surface area in a capillary pressure microtensiometer to show that adsorption is diffusion limited both below and above the critical micelle concentration (CMC). Above the CMC, a local equilibrium model is proposed in which depletion of the local monomer concentration drives dissociation of micelles in a region near the bubble surface.

The production of ϒ(2S) and ϒ(3S) mesons in lead-lead (Pb-Pb) and proton-proton (pp) collisions is studied in their dimuon decay channel using the CMS detector at the LHC. The ϒ(3S) meson is observed for the first time in Pb-Pb collisions, with a significance above 5 standard deviations. The ratios of yields measured in Pb-Pb and pp collisions are reported for both the ϒ(2S) and ϒ(3S) mesons, as functions of transverse momentum and Pb-Pb collision centrality.

Reflectin is an intrinsically disordered protein known for its ability to modulate the biophotonic camouflage of cephalopods based on its assembly-induced osmotic properties. Its reversible self-assembly into discrete, size-controlled clusters and condensed droplets are known to depend sensitively on the net protein charge, making reflectin stimuli-responsive to pH, phosphorylation, and electric fields. Despite considerable efforts to characterize this behavior, the detailed physical mechanisms of reflectin's assembly are not yet fully understood.

Background: Influenza vaccine uptake is low among underserved populations whose primary health care access occurs in emergency departments. We sought to determine whether implementation of two interventions would increase 30-day influenza vaccine uptake in unvaccinated patients in the emergency department.

Methods: This three-group, prospective, cluster-randomized controlled trial compared two interventions with a control group in noncritically ill, adult patients in the emergency department who were not vaccinated for influenza in the current vaccine season.
