Background: Long-COVID is a condition post SARS-CoV-2 infection with persistent or recurring symptoms affecting multiple organs, and may involve viral persistence, changes to the microbiome, coagulopathies, and alterations to neuro-immune interactions. These factors can disrupt the Gut-Brain Axis, which is a complex system involving bidirectional communication between the central nervous system and the gastrointestinal (GI) system. As a result of these disruptions, individuals with long-COVID may develop post-infectious functional GI disorders, which can cause a range of symptoms affecting the digestive system.

The impact of community-based food access strategies in high-income countries: a systematic review of randomised controlled trials.

Objectives: Some geographic regions in high-income countries (HIC), including Australia, have poor healthy food access and a high burden of diet-related chronic disease. Scalable and sustainable strategies to strengthen community food systems have the potential to address these inequities. To inform future interventions in regions with poor healthy food access in Sydney, Australia, and beyond, we systematically reviewed randomised controlled trials of community-based food access interventions in HIC, to identify effects on dietary behaviours and health outcomes.

Injectable, localized drug delivery using hydrogels made from ethoxylated trimethylolpropane tri-3-mercaptopropionate (ETTMP) and poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA) has shown great potential due to these hydrogels' ability to exhibit non-swelling behavior and tunable drug release properties. However, current synthesis methods in the literature suffer from poor ETTMP solubility in water, slow gelation times exceeding 20 min, and a lack of reproducibility. To address these limitations, we have developed a reliable synthesis procedure and conducted a sensitivity analysis of key variables.

Introduction: Differential attainment is a well-known phenomenon in medical education. Despite a strong impetus for institutions and researchers to move away from a 'student deficit model' when exploring the attainment gap, little attention has been given to understanding the experiences of Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) medical students. Informed by the social construction of learning theory, this is the first national study to explore how multiple dimensions of the medical school environment impact academic performance of BAME undergraduate medical students across the UK.

Ear and hearing outcomes in Aboriginal infants living in an urban Australian area: the birth cohort study.

Objective: Describe the ear and hearing outcomes in Aboriginal infants in an Australian urban area.

Design: Aboriginal infants enrolled in the prospective cohort study had ear health screenings at ages 2-4, 6-8 and 12-18 months and audiological assessment at ∼12 months of age. Sociodemographic, environmental characteristics, otoscopy, otoacoustic emissions, tympanometry and visual reinforcement audiometry data were collected.

Microorganisms are the ocean's first responders to marine pollution events, yet baseline studies rarely focus on microbial communities. Temporal and spatial microbial biodiversity baselines were established using bacterial 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing of seafloor sediments in a deep-water oil prospective area along the Scotian Slope off Canada's east coast sampled during 2015-2018. Bacterial diversity was generally similar in space and time, with members of the family Woeseiaceae detected consistently in >1 % relative abundance, similar to seabed sediments in other parts of the world.

However, workflows require large equipment, stable internet, and extensive computing power such that most of the work is performed far away from sample collection in both space and time. Performing amplicon sequencing and analysis at sample collection would have positive implications in many instances including remote fieldwork and point-of-care medical diagnoses.

An implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) can save lives from fatal tachyarrhythmias. In rare cases, these devices can fail or malfunction. We present a case of a patient that suffered from 25 inappropriate shocks and 22 episodes of antitachycardia pacing (ATP), secondary to a probable non-traumatic dual lead fracture.
