Relative macrofaunal biomass reduced under an enriched salmon farm, Pelorus Sound, Aotearoa-New Zealand.

We compared changes in the benthos associated with discharges from a salmon farm at a low-flow location in Pelorus Sound, Aotearoa-New Zealand to the Pearson and Rosenberg model (PRM). As predicted by PRM, benthic enrichment resulted in significant increases in abundance of small, opportunistic macrofauna beneath salmon farm cages. In contrast, at reference sites we found fewer but larger, rare species.

Rapid treatment of vessels fouled with an invasive polychaete, Sabella spallanzanii, using a floating dock and chlorine as a biocide.

Implementation of a structured program in the Long Day Care (LDC) setting presents challenges. Implementation of a structured FMS program FunMoves was assessed in LDC in metropolitan New South Wales.

Factors affecting the distribution of benthic macrofauna in estuaries contaminated by urban runoff.

Contaminants derived from urban runoff have been shown to accumulate in estuarine sediments, reaching concentrations potentially capable of causing biological effects. Demonstration of effects, however, is difficult due to strong natural environmental gradients and the effects of past or present point-sources of contamination. We used multivariate methods to test two hypotheses relating to the effects of urban-derived contaminants on estuarine benthic communities.

Vaccination with a bivalent G(M2) and G(D2) ganglioside conjugate vaccine: a trial comparing doses of G(D2)-keyhole limpet hemocyanin.

Immunization with GMK vaccine (G(M2) ganglioside conjugated to keyhole limpet hemocyanin mixed with QS-21 adjuvant) induces anti-G(M2) antibodies in close to 100% of patients. We found previously that anti-G(D2) antibodies could be induced in some patients using G(D2)-keyhole limpet hemocyanin + QS-21 (GDK). In this trial, we wished: (a) to determine whether immunization with both GMK and GDK vaccines could induce antibodies against both G(M2) and G(D2); and (b) to determine the optimal dose of GDK.

Regulation of ciliary neurotrophic factor expression in myelin-related Schwann cells in vivo.

Adult rat sciatic nerve is known to express high levels of ciliary neurotrophic factor (CNTF) mRNA and protein. Here we examine the cellular localization of CNTF protein and mRNA in peripheral nerve and the regulation of CNTF expression by peripheral axons. In intact nerve, CNTF immunoreactivity is found predominantly in the cytoplasm of myelin-related Schwann cells.
