Pneumatosis intestinalis (PI) and pneumoperitoneum are some of the complications after lung transplantation (LT). But only limited reports are published. The purpose of this study is to review our experience and perform a systematic review to discuss the possible causes, risk factors, and management.

State-dependent effects of responsive neurostimulation depend on seizure localization.

Brain-responsive neurostimulation is firmly ensconced among treatment options for drug-resistant focal epilepsy, but over a quarter of patients treated with the RNS System do not experience meaningful seizure reduction. Initial titration of RNS therapy is typically similar for all patients, raising the possibility that treatment response might be enhanced by consideration of patient-specific variables. Indeed, small, single-center studies have yielded preliminary evidence that RNS System effectiveness depends on the brain state during which stimulation is applied.

Mandibular movement monitor provides faster, yet accurate diagnosis for obstructive sleep apnoea: A randomised controlled study.

Many patients with obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) remain undiagnosed and thus untreated, and in part this relates to delay in diagnosis. Novel diagnostic strategies may improve access to diagnosis. In a multicentre, randomised study, we evaluated time to treatment decision in patients referred for suspected OSA, comparing a mandibular movement (MM) monitor to respiratory polygraphy, the most commonly used OSA detection method in the UK.

A persistent variant telomere sequence in a human pedigree.

The telomere sequence, TTAGGG, is conserved across all vertebrates and plays an essential role in suppressing the DNA damage response by binding a set of proteins termed shelterin. Changes in the telomere sequence impair shelterin binding, initiate a DNA damage response, and are toxic to cells. Here we identify a family with a variant in the telomere template sequence of telomerase, the enzyme responsible for telomere elongation, that led to a non-canonical telomere sequence.

Targeting thalamocortical circuits for closed-loop stimulation in Lennox-Gastaut syndrome.

This paper outlines the therapeutic rationale and neurosurgical targeting technique for bilateral, closed-loop, thalamocortical stimulation in Lennox-Gastaut syndrome, a severe form of childhood-onset epilepsy. Thalamic stimulation can be an effective treatment for Lennox-Gastaut syndrome, but complete seizure control is rarely achieved. Outcomes may be improved by stimulating areas beyond the thalamus, including cortex, but the optimal targets are unknown.

Acoustic trapping uses forces exerted by sound waves to transport small objects along specified trajectories in three dimensions. The structure of the time-averaged acoustic force landscape acting on an object is determined by the amplitude and phase profiles of the sound's pressure wave. These profiles typically are sculpted by deliberately selecting the amplitude and relative phase of the sound projected by each transducer in large arrays of transducers, all operating at the same carrier frequency.

Clinical Faculty Orientation Practices in the United States: A Descriptive Study.

Background: Due to the nursing faculty shortage, expert clinical nurses are working as novice clinical instructors (CIs). Orientation is needed to prepare these nurses to teach; however, lack of evidence-based guidelines for orientation programs can lead to variability among institutions.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to describe clinical nursing faculty orientation practices in the United States.

One example of this critical state is 'avalanche criticality', which has been observed in various systems, including cultured neurons, zebrafish, rodent cortex, and human EEG. More recently, power laws were also observed in neural populations in the mouse under an activity coarse-graining procedure, and they were explained as a consequence of the neural activity being coupled to multiple latent dynamical variables.

Mild obstructive sleep apnoea in females: analysis of the MERGE randomised controlled trial.

Background: A analysis of the MERGE trial was conducted, to investigate whether sex differences are evident at the mildest end of the disease spectrum, for symptoms associated with obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) and the response to continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) treatment.

Methods: MERGE participants with mild OSA (apnoea-hypopnoea index 5-15 events·h; American Academy of Sleep Medicine 2012 criteria) were randomised to either CPAP plus standard care (sleep hygiene counselling) or standard care alone for 3 months. Quality of life (QoL) was measured by questionnaires completed before and after the 3 months.

Background: Imperial College School of Medicine, London UK, introduced a new curriculum in 2019, with a focus on the GMC outcomes for graduates, and pedagogy best practice. The new curriculum included formative assessments, named engagement and feedback assessments (EFAs), to support learning, and attainment in the summative examinations. The aims of this study were to assess the validity of EFAs and to determine whether they have utility as a modified form of programmatic assessment to inform decision-making regarding possible interventions by measuring and analysing attendance at and performance in these formative events.

Chylothorax is a rare complication after double lung transplantation. We report a case of a 55-year-old man with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. He underwent a double lung transplantation with venoarterial extracorporeal membrane support.

Hundreds of 90-s iEEG records are typically captured from each NeuroPace RNS System patient between clinic visits. Efficacy of vibrotactile positional therapy devices on patients with positional obstructive sleep apnoea: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Introduction: Vibrotactile positional therapy (PT) devices are a new treatment modality for positional obstructive sleep apnoea (POSA). This review aimed to determine the effect of vibrotactile PT on the Apnoea Hypopnoea Index (AHI) and the percentage of time spent in the supine position (%Tsupine) in patients with POSA, compared with baseline. Northwestern University's Center for Health Equity Transformation founded a community scientist program in 2018 that implemented a study using the Community-Based Participatory Research (CBPR) model.

Background: Hepatic dysfunction is a morbid complication of lung transplantation. Little is known about risk factors for postoperative hepatic dysfunction or its impact on survival after lung transplantation.

Methods: This retrospective analysis of 1406 adult lung transplant recipients was performed at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania between January 1, 2007 and December 1, 2019.

Virtual consultations for patients with obstructive sleep apnoea: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Background: The coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic has accelerated the adoption of virtual care strategies for the management of patients with obstructive sleep apnoea/hypopnoea syndrome (OSAHS).

Research Question: What is the effectiveness of virtual consultations compared to in-person consultations for the management of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy in adult patients with OSAHS?

Methods: A systematic review and meta-analysis (PROSPERO; CRD42022297532) based on six electronic databases plus manually selected journals was conducted in January 2022. Two researchers independently selected, quality appraised and extracted data.

The full neural circuits of conscious perception remain unknown. Using a visual perception task, we directly recorded a subcortical thalamic awareness potential (TAP). We also developed a unique paradigm to classify perceived versus not perceived stimuli using eye measurements to remove confounding signals related to reporting on conscious experiences.
