Sodium pectate derivatives with 25% replacement of sodium ions with nickel ions were obtained by carbonization to temperatures of 280, 550, and 800 °C, under special protocols in an inert atmosphere by carbonization to temperatures of 280, 550, and 800 °C. The 25% substitution is the upper limit of substitution of sodium for nickel ions, above which the complexes are no longer soluble in water. It was established that the sample carburized to 550 °C is the most effective active element in the hydrogen-oxidation reaction, while the sample carbonized up to 800 °C was the most effective in the oxygen-reduction reaction.

We propose a concept of terahertz waveguide plasmon amplifier based on a metal groove with active graphene. It is shown that the power amplification factor of the longitudinal-section magnetic (LSM) waveguide plasmon (normalized to its wavelength) near the cut-off frequency of this mode can exceed the amplification factor of the transverse magnetic (TM) plasmon in a layered graphene structure by more than four orders of magnitude for the same frequency. This is caused by the increase of the LSM plasmon wavelength near the cut-off frequency, smaller energy velocity of the LSM mode, and greater energy release from graphene for the LSM plasmon due to stronger lateral confinement of the LSM waveguide plasmon as compared to the TM plasmon in a layered graphene structure.

A number of nickel complexes of sodium pectate with varied Ni content have been synthesized and characterized. The presence of the proton conductivity, the possibility of the formation of a dense spatial network of transition metals in these coordination biopolymers, and the immobilization of transition ions in the catalytic sites of this class of compounds make them promising for proton-exchange membrane fuel cells. It has been established that the catalytic system composed of a coordination biopolymer with 20% substitution of sodium ions for divalent nickel ions, Ni (20%)-NaPG, is the leading catalyst in the series of 5, 15, 20, 25, 35% substituted pectates.

The zeolitic imidazolate framework ZIF-8 (Zn(mim), mim = 2-methylimidazolate) has recently been proposed as a drug delivery platform for anticancer therapy based on its capability of decomposing in acidic media. The concept presumes a targeted release of encapsulated drug molecules in the vicinity of tumor tissues that typically produce secretions with elevated acidity. Due to challenges of and examination, many studies have addressed the kinetics of ZIF-8 decomposition and subsequent drug release in phosphate buffered saline (PBS) with adjusted acidity.

We propose a concept of an electrically controllable plasmonic directional coupler of terahertz signal based on a periodical structure with an active (with inversion of the population of free charge carriers) graphene with a dual grating gate and numerically calculate its characteristics. Proposed concept of plasmon excitation by using the grating gate offers highly effective coupling of incident electromagnetic wave to plasmons as compared with the excitation of plasmons by a single diffraction element. The coefficient which characterizes the efficiency of transformation of the electromagnetic wave into the propagating plasmon has been calculated.

In many fruit trees, heavy fruit load in one year reduces flowering in the following year, creating a biennial fluctuation in yield termed alternate bearing (AB). In subtropical trees, where flowering induction is mostly governed by the accumulation of chilling hours, fruit load is thought to generate a signal (AB signal) that blocks the perception of cold induction. Fruit removal during a heavy-fruit-load year is effective at inducing flowering only if performed one to a few months before the onset of the flowering induction period.

Experiments indicate that microdroplets undergoing micellar solubilization in the bulk of surfactant solution may excite Marangoni flows and self-propel spontaneously. Surprisingly, self-propulsion emerges even when the critical micelle concentration is exceeded and the Marangoni effect should be saturated. To explain this, we propose a novel model of a dissolving active droplet that is based on two fundamental assumptions: (a) products of the solubilization may inhibit surfactant adsorption; (b) solubilization prevents the formation of a monolayer of surfactant molecules at the droplet interface.

In this study we address a novel design of a planar memristor and investigate its biocompatibility. An experimental prototype of the proposed memristor assembly has been manufactured using a hybrid nanofabrication method, combining sputtering of electrodes, patterning the insulating trenches, and filling them with a memristive substance. To pattern the insulating trenches, we have examined two nanofabrication techniques employing either a focused ion beam or a cantilever tip of an atomic force microscope.

Drug delivery systems based on the zeolitic imidazolate framework ZIF-8 have recently attracted viable research interest owing to their capability of decomposing in acidic media and thus performing targeted drug delivery. In vivo realization of this mechanism faces a challenge of relatively slow decomposition rates, even at elevated acidic conditions that are barely achievable in diseased tissues. In this study we propose to combine drug delivery nanocomposites with a semiconductor photocatalytic agent that would be capable of inducing a local pH gradient in response to external electromagnetic radiation.
