Sinonasal undifferentiated carcinoma (SNUC) is a highly aggressive malignant neoplasm that is often difficult to distinguish from other poorly differentiated carcinomas arising in the sinonasal tract. To search for a differential cytokeratin (CK) expression that could be useful for diagnostic purposes, we compared the expression of a large panel of CKs in a series of 6 SNUCs, 10 poorly differentiated squamous cell carcinomas (SCCs), 10 nonkeratinizing squamous cell carcinomas (NKSCCs), and 5 nasopharyngeal-type undifferentiated carcinomas (NPTCs). The biologic mechanisms involved in the pathogenesis of multiple myeloma (MM) bone disease are not completely understood. Recent evidence suggests that T cells may regulate bone resorption through the cross-talk between the critical osteoclastogenetic factor, receptor activator of nuclear factor-kappaB ligand (RANKL), and interferon gamma (IFN-gamma) that strongly suppresses osteoclastogenesis. Using a coculture transwell system we found that human myeloma cell lines (HMCLs) increased the expression and secretion of RANKL in activated T lymphocytes and similarly purified MM cells stimulated RANKL production in autologous T lymphocytes.

Aldose reductase (ALR2) is susceptible to oxidative inactivation by copper ion. The mechanism underlying the reversible modification of ALR2 was studied by mass spectrometry, circular dichroism, and molecular modeling approaches on the enzyme purified from bovine lens and on wild type and mutant recombinant forms of the human placental and rat lens ALR2. Two equivalents of copper ion were required to inactivate ALR2: one remained weakly bound to the oxidized protein whereas the other was strongly retained by the inactive enzyme.

To correlate cerebral histopathological and immunohistochemical changes in the neuroclinical features of the AIDS dementia complex (ADC), autopsy results of 28 ADC patients were related, in a retrospective analysis, to scores on a standardised neurological examination performed at neurologic onset. From a histopathological point of view, the cases were classified as follows: 9 cases of HIV leucoencephalopathy (HIVL; diffuse myelin damage and rare microglial nodules), 7 cases of HIV encephalitis (HIVE; several microglial nodules and no myelin damage) and 12 cases of mixed HIVL and HIVE (HIVL-E). The finding that in addition to CD4 molecule HIV-1 uses, CCR5 or CXCR4 receptors to enter target cells prompted the research to identify polymorphisms in coreceptor genes affecting disease progression. In this study we analyzed the prevalence of CCR5-delta32, CCR2-641 and SDF1-3'A alleles in a highly selected group of 42 Long-Term Nonprogressors (LTNPs) compared to 112 subjects with a typical course of HIV-1 infection (TPs) and 117 healthy controls (HCs). A retrospective analysis of data from a cohort of patients coinfected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) who were treated with highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) at 3 infectious diseases units in northern Italy was performed.
