Efficacy of antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) for nonsurgical treatment of periodontal disease: a systematic review.

Although the standard treatment for periodontal disease is based on scaling and root planing (SRP), the use of antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) has been studied as a complement to obtain better clinical results. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of aPDT as adjuncts to SRP, compared with SRP alone, on clinical parameters of chronic periodontal patients. Only randomized controlled trials with at least 3-month follow-ups, of SRP alone and in association with aPDT, were included.

Effects of low-dose aspirin on the osseointegration process in rats.

Visible-Light Acceleration of H Evolution from Aqueous Solutions of Inorganic Hydrides Catalyzed by Gold-Transition-Metal Nanoalloys.

Production of hydrogen (H) upon hydrolysis of inorganic hydrides potentially is a key step in green energy production. We find that visible-light irradiation of aqueous solutions of ammonia-borane (AB) or NaBH containing "click"-dendrimer-stabilized alloyed nanocatalysts composed of nanogold and another late transition-metal nanoparticle (LTMNP) highly enhances catalytic activity for H generation while also inducing alloy to Au core@M shell nanocatalyst restructuration. In terms of visible-light-induced acceleration of H production from both AB and NaBH, the AuRu alloy catalysts show the most significant light-boosting effect.

Clinical Approaches to Cultural Diversity in Mental Health Care and Specificities of French Transcultural Consultations: A Scoping Review.

Cultural context substantially affects the experience and clinical expression of psychiatric diseases, while cultural factors limit both access to and effectiveness of care, especially for migrant families requiring specific types of services. We conducted a scoping review on psychiatric services adapted to cultural diversity, to compare these models of care to the French Transcultural Psychotherapy model. Systematic electronic search of databases (PubMed and PsycINFO), manual search of archives of journals dealing with transcultural psychiatry, and consultations with international experts, to identify all papers describing clinical models devoted to psychiatric care for migrants, published between January 1990 and October 2018.

Iron islands in the Amazon: investigating plant beta diversity of canga outcrops.

The world's largest mineral iron province, Serra dos Carajás, is home to an open vegetation known as canga, found on top of isolated outcrops rising out of the Amazon rainforest. Over one thousand vascular plants species have been recorded in these canga sites, including 38 edaphic endemics. A new survey adds to our investigation of biogeographic relationships between sixteen canga outcrops and the effect of the distance between site pairs on the number of shared species, regional species turnover and species distribution patterns.

Differential glycosylation of collagen modulates lung cancer stem cell subsets through β1 integrin-mediated interactions.

In lung cancer, CD133+ cells represent the subset of cancer stem cells (CSC) able to sustain tumor growth and metastatic dissemination. CSC function is tightly regulated by specialized niches composed of both stromal cells and extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins, mainly represented by collagen. The relevance of collagen glycosylation, a fundamental post-translational modification controlling several biological processes, in regulating tumor cell phenotype remains, however, largely unexplored.

Influence of stormwater infiltration systems on the structure and the activities of groundwater biofilms: Are the effects restricted to rainy periods?

Stormwater infiltration systems (SIS) have been set up to collect and infiltrate urban stormwater runoff in order to reduce flooding and to artificially recharge aquifers. Such practices produce environmental changes in shallow groundwater ecosystems like an increase in organic matter concentrations that could drive changes in structure and functions of groundwater microbial communities. Previous works suggested that SIS influence groundwater physico-chemistry during either rainy and dry period but no study has examined the impact of SIS on groundwater microorganisms during both periods.

Severe neutropenia in an anorexic adolescent girl: a stigma of underfeeding syndrome?

Purpose: We describe a case of severe, prolonged neutropenia in an adolescent girl hospitalized for anorexia nervosa (AN) which occurred during a refeeding procedure in the absence of refeeding syndrome.

Methods: This case report includes retrospective anamnestic, clinical and biological data from the patient's medical record. A literature review was conducted on the haematological changes described in the undernutrition and refeeding periods, and also on recent data for underfeeding syndrome in patients with anorexia nervosa.
