Physical activity (PA) is beneficial for several health outcomes. Adults born with very low birth weight (VLBW<1500g) undertake less PA than those born at term, have poorer motor abilities and may serve as a model on early life origins of PA. We therefore examined whether motor abilities mediate the association between being born with VLBW and device-measured PA.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to assess the long-term physical performance and activity levels of older men who have survived radical prostate cancer compared to matched controls.
  • The research included 109 men aged 70 and older who had received robotic surgery or radiation therapy, and their results were compared to 327 men from the general population.
  • Overall, survivors showed similar physical performance and activity levels as controls, with only minor differences in grip strength and balance that might not be clinically significant, indicating that cancer treatment likely did not adversely affect their functional status.

Background: To combat the high prevalence of physical inactivity among children, there is an urgent need to develop and implement real-world interventions and policies that promote physical activity (PA) and reduce sedentary behaviour (SB). To inform policy makers, the current body of evidence for children's PA/SB interventions needs to be translated.

Objectives: The current systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to identify modifiable determinants of device-measured PA and SB targeted in available intervention studies with randomized controlled trial (RCT) and controlled trial (CT) designs in children and early adolescents (5-12 years) and to quantify the effects of the interventions within their respective settings on the determinants of PA/SB and the outcomes PA and SB.

Previous physical activity interventions for children (5-12yrs) have aimed to change determinants associated with self-report physical activity behaviour (PAB) and/or sedentary behaviour (SB), however, the associations between these determinants and PAB/SB in different settings are uncertain. The present study aimed to identify modifiable determinants targeted in previous PAB/SB interventions for children. Intervention effects on the determinants and their associations with self-report PAB/SB were assessed across settings.

Background: Insomnia symptoms that influence daytime functioning are common among adults with type 2 diabetes. However, no previous study has examined if levels of physical activity differ among adults with diabetes with and without insomnia symptoms. Thus, the aim of this study was to assess the difference in total physical activity (TPA) and moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) levels in individuals with diabetes with and without insomnia symptoms.

Background: Family factors, sleep, and physical activity have previously been associated with risk of sick leave and disability benefits due to musculoskeletal disorders. However, how these factors act during adolescence and young adulthood is unclear. The aim of this study was to (i) examine if chronic pain, disability benefits and education in parents influence the risk of long-term sick leave due to musculoskeletal disorders in young adulthood, and (ii) to explore if offspring sleep problems and physical activity modify these effects.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examined how physical work demands influence the effectiveness of the selfBACK app, aimed at managing low-back pain, with participants categorized into low and high physical demand groups.
  • Results showed that, after three months, high-demand workers using selfBACK experienced significant reductions in pain intensity, and by nine months, improvements were also noted in pain-related disability and self-efficacy, compared to usual care.
  • Despite different physical demands, both low and high physical demand workers benefited similarly from the selfBACK intervention, suggesting it is effective for managing low-back pain regardless of physical work intensity.

Article Synopsis
  • Rape can cause a lot of trauma and can lead to something called PTSD. A study looked at a type of therapy called modified prolonged exposure (mPE) to help women after a sexual assault and prevent PTSD.
  • The study involved three centers in Norway, where women received help within 72 hours after the assault, and some participated in the new therapy while others received standard treatment.
  • Out of 235 women who visited the centers, 22 took part in the study, and results showed that most participants finished their therapy and the new mPE treatment was delivered successfully.

Objectives: The objectives of this study are to examine the association of physical activity in parents with physical activity in their adult offspring and explore if the offspring's genetic liability (ie, polygenic risk score) to physical activity influences this association.

Methods: The Trøndelag Health Study cohort is a population-based longitudinal study with data collected in 1984-1986, 1995-1997, 2006-2008 and 2017-2019. We calculated the odds ratio for being physically active and mean difference in physical activity levels according to parental physical activity (device-measured and self-reported) and own polygenic risk score.

Background: Although physical activity (PA) is associated with significant health benefits, only a small percentage of adolescents meet recommended PA levels. This systematic review with meta-analysis explored the modifiable determinants of adolescents' device-based PA and/or sedentary behaviour (SB), evaluated in previous interventions and examined the associations between PA/SB and these determinants in settings.

Methods: A search was conducted on five electronic databases, including papers published from January 2010 to July 2023.

Background: Neck pain remains a persistent challenge in modern society and is frequently encountered across a wide range of occupations, particularly those involving repetitive and monotonous tasks. It might be expected that patterns of trapezius muscle activity at work, characterized by few breaks and prolonged periods of sustained muscle activity, are linked to neck pain. However, previous cross-sectional studies have generally failed to establish a definitive association.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to create a machine learning model to improve sleep duration predictions based on body-worn accelerometers, addressing challenges in detecting sleep/wake states through movement alone.
  • Twenty-nine adults participated, with data collected from overnight polysomnography and accelerometers featuring embedded skin temperature sensors, which served as the basis for training the model.
  • Results showed that adding skin temperature and contextual data to the model improved prediction accuracy (specificity increased from 0.52 to 0.72) while maintaining high sensitivity (0.95) and reducing sleep overestimation.

Achieving reliable and quantifiable performance in large-area surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) substrates poses a formidable challenge, demanding signal enhancement while ensuring response uniformity and reproducibility. Conventional SERS substrates often made of inhomogeneous materials with random resonator geometries, resulting in multiple or broadened plasmonic resonances, undesired absorptive losses, and uneven field enhancement. These limitations hamper reproducibility, making it difficult to conduct comparative studies with high sensitivity.

Objective: Individuals born very preterm (<32 weeks of gestation) or with very low birthweight (<1500g) have lower cognitive function compared with term-born peers. Furthermore, some studies suggest that they are less physically active as young adults than controls, but the relationship between physical activity and cognitive function remains unclear. We performed an individual participant data meta-analysis to examine whether being born preterm/with very low birth weight is associated with physical activity in adulthood and examined if cognitive function mediates this association.
