Historical account of Katayama disease is presented as a centenary record since the discovery of Schistosoma japonicum in Japan in 1904. The ever unknown endemic disease was called Katayama disease. Katayama district, Hiroshima Prefecture is one of endemic areas of schistosomiasis japonica in Japan.

We produced a new monoclonal antibody (mAb) to the excretory-secretory (ES) antigens of Toxocara canis larvae. The mAb (IgG1) reacts specifically with the 120 kDa protein of many ES molecules and does not have any cross-reactivity with adult T. canis antigens.

The effect of heat treatment was examined against oocysts of Cryptosporidium parvum, Cryptosporidium muris and chicken Cryptosporidium sp. isolated in Japan. The oocysts of these species were exposed at 50, 55, 60 and 70 degrees C for 5, 15, 30 and 60 sec in water bath, respectively.

A total of 52 paragonimiasis patients was treated with praziquantel at three dose levels: 21 patients received 3 x 25.0 mg/kg bwt on a single day, 21 patients were treated with 3 x 25.0 mg/kg for 2 consecutive days and 10 patients were treated with the same dose for 3 consecutive days.

Paragonimiasis is one of the most important endemic diseases in Korea. However, recognition of the limitation of microscopic examination of sputum and feces for Paragonimus eggs has led to the investigation of immunoserological techniques for paragonimiasis. The other hand, bithionol preparation has been used as a drug of choice in paragonimiasis but recently niclofolan preparation has introduced as a new agent.
