Background: Schistosoma haematobium is the causative pathogen for urogenital schistosomiasis. To achieve progress towards schistosomiasis elimination, there is a critical need for developing highly sensitive and specific tools to monitor transmission in near-elimination settings. Although antibody detection is a promising approach, it is usually unable to discriminate active infections from past ones.

  • New synthetic opioids, particularly fentanyl analogues like 4-fluoro-isobutyrylfentanyl (4F-iBF), present a significant public health risk due to their potential for abuse and toxicity to the liver and kidneys.
  • In studies with rats, 4F-iBF caused severe damage to the liver and kidneys, while the similar drug 4-chloro-isobutyrylfentanyl (4Cl-iBF) resulted in milder renal damage; pretreatment with a MOR antagonist helped mitigate the injuries.
  • The research also examined how these fentanyl analogues are metabolized over time, revealing that 4F-iBF persists in the bloodstream longer than its analogues, indicating potential for

Article Synopsis
  • Schistosomiasis is a major public health issue, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa, with the World Health Organization aiming for its elimination by 2030 as part of the Neglected Tropical Diseases Roadmap.
  • Current diagnostic methods like the Kato-Katz technique struggle to detect light-intensity infections, prompting the need for better tests; the point-of-care circulating cathodic antigen (POC-CCA) test has improved sensitivity but still faces challenges.
  • This study found that antibody detection using recombinant protein antigens SmSerpin and RP26 can effectively identify light-intensity S. mansoni infections, showing a sensitivity of 83.7% and improved specificity compared to traditional methods.

A rat model of mesothelioma development by peritoneal injection of multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) has been established and found to be useful to understand the mechanisms underlying fibrous particles-associated carcinogenesis. Its detailed histological sequence, however, remains largely obscure. We therefore aimed to assess the time-course of mesothelioma development by MWCNT and evaluate a set of lipoprotein-related molecules as potential mechanism-based biomarkers for the phenomenon.

To eliminate schistosomiasis, appropriate diagnostic tests are required to monitor its prevalence and transmission, especially in the settings with low endemicity resulting from the consecutive mass drug administration. Antibodies that react with either crude soluble schistosome egg antigens or soluble worm antigen preparations have been used to monitor infection in low-prevalence regions. However, these detection methods cannot discriminate current and past infections and are cross-reactive with other parasites because both antigens contain numerous proteins and glycans from schistosomes, and standard preparations need maintenance of the life cycle of the schistosome.
