Purpose: This study was performed to identify patients who would benefit from lateral lymph node (LLN) dissection for advanced low rectal carcinoma.
Methods: Clinical outcomes were retrospectively studied in 149 patients with node positive low rectal carcinoma undergoing LLN dissection according to LLN status: patients with (group II) or without positive LLNs (group I), and the number (≤3, >3), side (unilateral, bilateral), and site of positive LLNs.
Results: The overall 5-year survival rate was significantly worse in group II (36.
Objective: Interaction of CA19-9 with E-selectin is involved in initiation of hematogenous metastases. We investigated whether serum concentrations of E-selectin and CA19-9 are good predictors of hematogenous metastases and prognosis in colorectal cancer.
Methods: Pre-operative serum samples were obtained from 152 patients with colorectal cancer, and from 28 healthy volunteers.
Metachronous multiple carcinomas at the site of a stoma is a rare condition after surgery. A 67-year-old man with a second tumor at the stoma site 15 years after abdominoperineal resection for rectal carcinoma is reported herein with a review of the Japanese literature. The patient visited our hospital 20 years after initial surgery, presenting with constipation and increasing tumor size in the stoma.

We report herein a case of a patient with a poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma in the ascending colon with peritoneal dissemination who survived more than eleven years thanks to adjuvant chemotherapy. A 53-year-old woman with continuous diarrhea was referred to our hospital.

We investigated whether serum levels of C-reactive protein (CRP), a biomarker of inflammation, are associated with colorectal cancer, using serum samples collected in the Japan Collaborative Cohort Study (JACC Study).
Methods: We conducted a nested case-control study in the JACC Study, investigating the relationship between the risk for colorectal cancer and serum levels of CRP determined by a high-sensitivity CRP enzyme immunoassay.
Purpose: Rectal stump washout has been recommended to prevent implantation of exfoliated malignant cells in the anastomosis after anterior resection for rectal cancer. The aim of this study was to investigate its efficacy, particularly the extent to which the volume of irrigation fluid might influence the efficacy of tumor cell elimination and whether tumor characteristics might influence the result.
Methods: The study comprised 30 consecutive patients operated on by anterior resection for rectal cancer.
Background: Transanal endoscopic microsurgery facilitates access to proximal tumors in the rectum, but there is limited possibility for tumors above the peritoneal reflection because of high cost, training, and long operative time. The objectives of this study are to delineate the results achieved by novel transanal local excision (minimally invasive transanal surgery [MITAS]) with the use of a new anal retractor, stapler device, and several modified surgical techniques for selected rectal tumors.
Study Design: Ninety-one patients with 93 tumors undergoing MITAS between 1993 and 2000 were retrospectively reviewed for prospectively collected data with a minimum 2 years followup and without adjuvant radiation or chemotherapy.
High expression of thymidylate synthase (TS) is allegedly associated with the chemoresistance to 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) in colorectal cancers. However, low TS expression does not necessarily imply chemosensitivity. Inactivation of p16(INK4a) correlates with poor prognosis in various cancers.

The aim of this study was therefore to study whether (and if so to what extent) different positions of the patient on the operating table might improve accessibility. Twenty consecutive patients (men and women) undergoing laparotomy with surgery of the lower rectum were studied.

A 65-year-old woman developed pain in the right gluteal region due to locally extended rectal carcinoma, and was treated with intraarterial infusion therapy. The chemotherapy regimen was 5-FU (500 mg/body) and l-leucovorin (175 mg/body) administered over 3 hours once weekly to bilateral reservoirs through an infuser pump.

The subjects were 158 males and 158 females aged 40-79 years, and living in Hokkaido, Japan, who attended a health examination screening. Serum levels of CRP, oxLDL, oLAB, and leptin were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and serum carotenoid levels were measured by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC).

Twenty-seven patients (Group I) underwent hepatic artery infusion chemotherapy and 74 patients (Group II) underwent resection alone. The average survival time was 17.

A 61-year-old woman with a huge, locally extended advanced rectal cancer was treated with intra-arterial infusion therapy via internal iliac artery. Catheters were inserted from the bilateral femoral arteries to the opposite internal iliac arteries and the bilateral upper and lower gluteal arteries and lateral sacral artery were embolized with a metallic coil.

Epithelial cyst of the gallbladder associated with papillary adenoma and adenocarcinoma is presented herein. A 70-year-old male patient with general malaise was admitted to our hospital during the follow-up of an elevated mucosal lesion in the fundus of the gallbladder. Endoscopic ultrasonography revealed a cystic lesion adjacent to the elevated lesion, and interruption of the hyperechoic third layer of the gallbladder wall next to the gallbladder bed of the liver.
