We present a successfully treated case of a multi-septated massive hepatic cyst with repeated injection of minocycline hydrochloride (MINO). A 57-year-old Japanese female complaining of right back pain, hypochondralgia and hypertension had a multi-septated massive hepatic cyst, 25 cm in diameter. Multiple cysts of various sizes were also seen in liver and kidneys.

Molecules encoded by the human CD1 locus on chromosome 1 (ref. 33) are recognized by selected CD4-8- T-cell clones expressing either alpha beta or gamma delta T-cell antigen receptors. The known structural resemblance of CD1 molecules to antigen-presenting molecules encoded by major histocompatibility complex (MHC) genes on human chromosome 6 (refs 3, 4, 34, 35), suggested that CD1 may represent a family of antigen-presenting molecules separate from those encoded in the MHC.

In the Kanto area a total of 245 wild rats were captured. All rats captured in Ikebukuro (110 rats) and 9 out of 41 rats in Yokohama were Rattus rattus, and all other 126 rats were Rattus norvegicus. In Kashima and Ikebukuro, listeria was isolated from 28 rats (77.

A spotted fever group rickettsia was isolated from Apodemus mice captured near the site where a person had been infected in Miyazaki Prefecture. Antigenic characteristics of the isolate designated as strain TO-1 were compared with those of Rickettsia japonica (strain YH) and Rickettsia montana (ATCC VR611) by the indirect fluorescent antibody test with 14 serum specimens obtained from Apodemus speciosus, immune rat antisera against the strains TO-1 and YH, and three patients' sera. The titers of these sera measured with strain TO-1 were identical to those with strain YH, suggesting the antigenic similarity between these two organisms.

To determine if effector subsets exist among human gamma/delta T cells, we examined the cytokine production and cytotoxic activity of gamma/delta T cell clones with different accessory molecule phenotypes, V delta and V gamma gene expression, and J gamma rearrangements. T cell clones bearing gamma/delta T cell receptor produce an array of cytokines like alpha/beta T cell clones. Individual gamma/delta T cell clones produced a characteristic array of cytokines without correlation with V delta or V gamma gene expression.

Little is known about the nature of Ag recognition by the TCR-gamma delta. The recent observation that gamma delta T cells preferentially recognize mycobacterial Ag provides a model to examine the molecular basis of gamma delta-TCR recognition. Here, examination of the Mycobacteria-stimulated peripheral blood T cells with TCR-specific mAb revealed a predominance of T cells bearing V gamma 2/V delta 2 gene products.

We have constructed the recombinant baculovirus which expresses the human immunodeficiency virus type 1 negative factor (nef) gene. Spodoptera frugiperda cells infected with the recombinant virus produced a 27-kDa protein which reacted with rabbit antisera raised against a carboxy-terminal synthetic peptide of the Nef protein by immunoblot analysis. Labeling experiment showed that the recombinant Nef protein was myristoylated.

Lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus (LCMV) was isolated from 14 out of 35 wild house mouse samples captured on two piers of Osaka port in Japan. Four of them were isolated from were isolated from 18 antibody positive mice while 10 were from 17 antibody negative mice. This is the first report of the isolation of LCMV from wild mice in Japan.

T cells bearing gamma/delta antigen receptors comprise a resident population of intraepithelial lymphocytes in organs such as skin, gut, and lungs, where they are strategically located to contribute to the initial defense against infection. An important unsolved question about antigen-driven gamma/delta T cell responses regards the breadth of their T cell receptor (TCR) repertoire, since many specific epithelial compartments in mice display limited diversity. We have examined the diversity of TCR delta gene expression among human gamma/delta T cells from skin lesions induced by intradermal challenge with Mycobacterium leprae.

From 1985 to 1989, a total of 129 mice was captured from 7 piers of Yokohama port. Of these, 9 (7.0%) were positive to lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus (LCMV) antigen in indirect fluorescence antibody test.

A total of 81 cell clones persistently infected with the LAV-1 or HTLV-IIIB strain of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) was isolated from cells which were obtained by serial passage of some proliferating MT-4 cells after a drastic cytolysis of most cells by HIV-1-infection. These cell clones were classified into 8 types (I to VIII) in terms of the expression of HIV-1 antigens, syncytium formation capacity, and reverse transcriptase activity and infectivity of virus particles in the culture fluid. Type I cell clones were producers of infectious HIV-1 particles, while types II to VIII cell clones did not produce infectious HIV-1 or were producers of uninfectious defective HIV-1 particles.

From 1979 to 1981, questionnaires were sent to 2094 hospitals throughout Japan to investigate the causes of severe hypoglycemic attacks other than the administration of oral hypoglycemic agents or insulin preparations. The survey revealed three main causes for the attacks, of which the first was insulinoma, the second extrapancreatic neoplasms, and the third was insulin autoimmune syndrome (IAS), in descending order. Seven years later, a second survey was carried out, which showed the order of the three disorders as the cause of the hypoglycemic attacks to be the same as in the first survey.

The germline repertoire of variable genes for the TCR-gamma/delta is limited. This, together with the availability of several V delta-specific and a C delta-specific mAbs, has made it possible to assess differences in the TCR-gamma/delta repertoire in man. TCR-gamma/delta cells expressing particular V gene segments have been previously shown to be localized in different anatomical sites.

Fourteen of Apodemus speciosus (large Japanese field mouse) were captured near the place where one of the patients with spotted fever group rickettsiosis had been infected, in Takaoka town, Miyazaki Prefecture. In the town, four human cases were reported. All of the mice had antibodies against Rickettsia japonica and R.

Several cell clones producing teardrop-shaped human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) particles were isolated from MT-4 cells that survived HIV-1 infection after extensive cell lysis. Most of the teardrop-shaped particles contained an electron-dense core structure, and the particles could replicate in MT-4 cells. No significant structural difference in the HIV-1 proteins was observed between these cell clones and the MOLT-4 cells producing intact HIV-1 particles, although their envelope structure is morphologically abnormal.

Three cell clones producing large numbers of infectious or noninfectious particles of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1), designated M 10/LAV-2, M 16/LAV-3, and MT/LAV-17, were isolated from persistently HIV-1-infected MT-4 cells. In M 10/LAV-2, the HIV-1 proteins were defective in the cleavage of gag precursor protein, and the particles were doughnut-shaped with a double-ring structure. These particles were produced by budding at the cell surface from crescentic structures followed by the formation of double-ring structures.
