Background: Since nontuberculous mycobacterial pulmonary disease (NTM-PD) is common in middle-aged/elderly slender women at risk of osteoporosis, we hypothesized that NTM-PD could be associated with osteoporosis. The study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of osteoporosis in patients with NTM-PD compared with that in the general population and determine the factors associated with osteoporosis in the subjects, including the serum estradiol (E) and 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25OHD) levels.
Methods: We have recruited 228 consecutive adult patients with NTM-PD from a prospective cohort study at the Keio University Hospital, who had no history of osteoporosis or osteoporosis-associated bone fracture but underwent dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry-based bone mineral density (BMD) evaluation from August 2017-September 2019.
Na/K-ATPase (NKA) plays an important role in ion homeostasis and neurotransmitter uptake. In the retina, multidirectional communications among neurons, glia, and blood vessels (that is, neuro-glio-vascular interaction) are crucial for maintaining tissue homeostasis. We investigated the role of NKA in the elements of neuro-glio-vascular unit in neonatal and adult rat retinas.

Furthermore, among patients with SpA and IBD, we aimed to clarify what clinical characteristics lead rheumatologists to diagnose "IBD-related arthritis." Utilizing SpA and psoriatic arthritis (PsA) patients' data from an international, cross-sectional, observational study, we analyzed information on demographics and disease characteristics, dichotomizing patients by IBD status.

Organ bath experiments are conventionally used to investigate the physiological actions and effects of hormones and drugs on organ responses. We developed an experimental method to reproduce insulin secretion from isolated rat pancreas preparations, to investigate substances that promote insulin secretion ex vivo. 1,5-anhydro-D-glucitol (1,5-AG) is found in foods, and exists in humans and rodents; however, whether 1,5-AG stimulates insulin secretion remains unclear.

We focused on the anastomosis between the external carotid artery (ECA) and the RA graft in the cervical region and present adverse events and salvage procedures.
Methods: EC-IC high-flow bypass procedures using an RA graft were performed to treat 87 consecutive patients.

Coagulopathy is a common sequela of traumatic brain injury. Consumptive coagulopathy and secondary hyperfibrinolysis are associated with hypercoagulability. In addition, fibrinolytic pathways are hyperactivated as a result of vascular endothelial cell damage in the injured brain.

This paper resolved basic issues to extract interface signals from the calculation. These issues stem from the boundary to restrict the bulk region, which renders the practical computation feasible at a finite and affordable cost.

The present study investigated whether similarities in cognitive functions that are sensitive to age play a role in confidant social networks among older adults. We analyzed the data of 252 community-dwelling older adults in Wakuya City, Miyagi Prefecture, Japan, who responded to a self-administered questionnaire and cognitive health checkups provided by the city in 2017.

Thus, this study aimed to investigate the advantages, disadvantages, and safety of "simultaneous temporary use of an endoscope during exoscopic surgery" (exo-endoscopic surgery (EES)). Consecutive exo-endoscopic surgeries performed by experienced neurosurgeons and assistants were analyzed.

The present study elucidates the reaction mechanism of phenol characteristic at the air-water interface by the combination of molecular dynamics simulation and quantum chemical calculations of the excited states. We found that incomplete hydrogen bonding to phenol at the air-water interface affects excited states associated with the conical intersection and significantly reduces the reaction barrier, resulting in the distinctively facilitated rate in comparison with the bulk phase.

One month later, she developed hoarseness and was diagnosed with laryngitis. The laryngitis healed immediately after treatment discontinuation, and no recurrence occurred even after resuming intermittent inhalation.

Although this information is important to understand the virus pathogenesis and design better anti-viral drugs or vaccines, obtaining it with the conventional free radical/ROS detection techniques is impossible. Here, we elucidate the utility of diamond magnetometry for studying the free radical response of baby hamster kidney-21 cells upon Semliki Forest virus infection.

The aim of this study was to determine whether induction of esophageal peristalsis could improve the ability to evaluate the Z line in children and adolescents.
Patients And Methods: Study 1: Consecutive patients (10-15 years) undergoing EGD with propofol or midazolam sedation were enrolled.
The steroidal alkaloid tomatidine is an aglycone of α-tomatine, which is abundant in tomato leaves and has several biological activities. Tomatidine has been reported to inhibit the growth of cultured cancer cells in vitro, but its anti-cancer activity in vivo and inhibitory effect against gastric cancer cells remain unknown. We investigated the efficacy of tomatidine using human gastric cancer-derived 85As2 cells and its tumor-bearing mouse model and evaluated the effect of tomatidine-rich tomato leaf extract (TRTLE) obtained from tomato leaves.

Objective: Hereditary sensory and autonomic neuropathies (HSANs) are a clinical heterogenous group of inherited neuropathies featuring prominent sensory and autonomic involvement. We report on the management of pregnancy and delivery in a woman with HSAN type V (HSAN-V) that is a rare inherited disease characterized by pain insensitivity, and partial anhidrosis.
Case Report: A 25-year-old woman with HSAN-V at six weeks of gestation was referred to our hospital.
The etiology of multiple inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) remains poorly understood. As clues to elucidate the pathogenic condition, several characteristic peripheral immunophenotypes have been reported in MIS-C. However, no report has demonstrated the time course of the peripheral immunophenotype along with the clinical course in the same patient.

Methods: This clinic-based retrospective longitudinal study included 699 Japanese type 2 diabetes mellitus patients. Visit-to-visit variability of HbA1c was calculated as the internal standard deviation of HbA1c (HbA1c-SD), the coefficient of variation of HbA1c (HbA1c-CV), the HbA1c change score (HbA1c-HVS), and the area under the HbA1c curve (HbA1c-AUC) with 3-year serial HbA1c measurement data, and the associations between these indices and the development/progression of DKD were examined.
