Correlation of World Health Organization 2010 Classification for Gastroenteropancreatic Neuroendocrine Neoplasms with the Prognosis of Ovarian Neuroendocrine Neoplasms: Kansai Clinical Oncology Group-Protocol Review Committee/Intergroup Study.

Background: In 2014, the World Health Organization (WHO) released a classification system introducing neuroendocrine neoplasms (NENs) of the female reproductive tract, excluding the ovaries. This study aimed to evaluate whether retrospective adaption of the gastroenteropancreatic (GEP)-NEN classification is feasible for ovarian NENs (O-NENs) and correlates with prognosis.

Methods: Sixty-eight patients diagnosed with carcinoid, small cell carcinoma (pulmonary type), paraganglioma, non-small/large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma (NEC), mixed NEC, or undifferentiated carcinomas at 20 institutions in Japan were included in this retrospective cross-sectional study.

Background: One of the features of cervical cancer screening using the combination of cytology and human papillomavirus (HPV) testing is the triage for atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance (ASC-US). The effectiveness of the triage has been recognized widely. However, there are few reports evaluating this triage process in Japan.

New criteria for the omission of lymphadenectomy in endometrioid carcinoma.

Objective: To establish new criteria for the omission of lymphadenectomy in patients with endometrioid carcinoma.

Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 185 cases of histologically confirmed endometrioid carcinoma by hysterectomy at Jichi Medical University Hospital between January 2006 and December 2011. We reviewed patient medical records to detect risk factors for lymph node metastasis to identify the optimum criteria for lymphadenectomy omission.

Successful laparotomy tumor resection and levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system for atypical polypoid adenomyoma.

Hysteroscopic transcervical resection (TCR) is often performed as fertility sparing treatment for atypical polypoid adenomyoma (APA) patients. However, TCR has the risk of uterine wall perforation, especially when the tumor extends deeply into the uterine muscle layer. We report an APA patient in whom it was impossible to completely resect the tumor by TCR, but laparotomy tumor resection followed by levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system (LNG-IUS) was successful.

A Potentially Useful Addition to Predict Spontaneous Resolution of Uterine Artery Pseudoaneurysm: Absence of Diastolic Flow.

Pregnancy-associated uterine artery pseudoaneurysm (UAP) usually requires transarterial embolization (TAE) irrespective of the presence/absence of current bleeding. Some UAP cases spontaneously resolve without TAE; however, such UAP is not well characterized. Here, we suggest that Pulse Wave Doppler may become an addition to predict its spontaneous resolution.

The purpose of this study was to clarify the response to and toxicity of gemcitabine for recurrent ovarian cancer according to the number of previous chemotherapy regimens.

Methods: The subjects were patients with taxane/platinum-resistant recurrent ovarian cancer on gemcitabine treatment at the present hospital between June 2007 and September 2013.

Serous retinal detachment is sometimes caused by hypertensive disorders in pregnancy and its associated conditions, in which the predominant eye symptoms are blurred vision, distorted vision, and reduced visual acuity. To our best knowledge, this is the first report of a puerperal woman with hemolysis, elevated liver enzymes, and low platelet count (HELLP) syndrome in whom color vision abnormality was the first and predominant manifestation of serous retinal detachment. At 32 weeks of gestation, the 34-year-old Japanese woman underwent cesarean section due to HELLP syndrome.

We here described the antioxidant effects of carnitine supplementation on 14-3-3 protein isoforms in the aged rat hippocampus detected using the fully automated two-dimensional chip gel electrophoresis system (Auto2D). This system was easy and convenient to use, and the resolution obtained was more sensitive and higher than that of conventional two-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (2-D PAGE). We separated and identified five isoforms of the 14-3-3 protein (beta/alpha, gamma, epsilon, zeta/delta, and eta) using the Auto2D system.

[A case of intraventricular meningioma manifesting akinetic mutism after complicated management of hydrocephalus].

A 26-year-old male with large intraventricular meningioma developed acute hydrocephalus postoperatively, which was difficult to manage. After a repeated course of dilated and slit-like ventricle, he gradually presented a disturbance of consciousness, which was recovered by the use of bromocriptine, suggesting akinetic mutism. At the chronic stage, he suffered from symptoms of hydrocephalus again.

Moyamoya disease (MMD) and atherosclerotic cerebrovascular disease (ACVD) differ in angiographic appearance and probably hemodynamics. Pediatric MMD (PMMD) usually presents with cerebral ischemia, while intracranial hemorrhage is more common in adult MMD (AMMD), suggesting differences in cerebral hemodynamics. We analyzed the cortical flow velocity and direction of recipient arteries using micro-Doppler ultrasonography to evaluate the cortical circulation before and after anastomosis in MMD and ACVD.

Accumulation of oxidatively modified proteins is widely observed in aged animal tissues. Protein carbonyls are mostly derived from lysine, arginine, proline and threonine residues under oxidative conditions. Many groups have investigated carbonylated proteins since a convenient immunochemical procedure was established for detecting dinitrophenyl derivatives of carbonyls and applied to proteomic research.

Our previous phosphoproteomic study of the human neuroblastoma cell line SH-SY5Y revealed changes in the phosphorylation of several proteins such as lamin A/C during 6-hydroxydopamine-induced oxidative stress. The present study employed native proteomic analysis to clarify protein-protein interaction under physiological conditions.

Development of an open source laboratory information management system for 2-D gel electrophoresis-based proteomics workflow.

Background: In the post-genome era, most research scientists working in the field of proteomics are confronted with difficulties in management of large volumes of data, which they are required to keep in formats suitable for subsequent data mining. Therefore, a well-developed open source laboratory information management system (LIMS) should be available for their proteomics research studies.

Results: We developed an open source LIMS appropriately customized for 2-D gel electrophoresis-based proteomics workflow.

Phosphoproteomic profiling of human SH-SY5Y neuroblastoma cells during response to 6-hydroxydopamine-induced oxidative stress.

Dopaminergic neurons are known to be vulnerable to age-related neuronal disorders due to reactive oxygen species (ROS) generated during dopamine metabolism. However, it remains unclear what kinds of proteins are involved in the response to oxidative stress. We examined changes in whole proteins and phosphoproteins in the human dopaminergic neuroblastoma cell line SH-SY5Y under oxidative stress induced by the dopaminergic neurotoxin 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA).

The maturation/lysis (A2) protein encoded by the group B single-stranded RNA bacteriophage Qbeta mediates lysis of host Escherichia coli cells. We found a frameshift mutation in the replicase (beta-subunit) gene of Qbeta cDNA causes cell lysis. The mutant has a single base deletion 73 nucleotides (nt) 3' from the start of the replicase gene with consequent translation termination at a stop codon 129-131 nt further 3'.

Does hyperuricemia affect mortality? A prospective cohort study of Japanese male workers.

A positive association between hyperuricemia and cardiovascular disease has been reported, but no study has evidenced yet the precise role of serum uric acid in the development of cardiovascular disease. In addition, no epidemiological studies have so far documented a decreased risk of cancer among people with hyperuricemia, even though the antioxidant action of uric acid has recently been stressed to inhibit DNA damage. The present prospective cohort study investigates the relationship between hyperuricemia and health hazards in a Japanese working population.

Development of an integrated radiotherapy network system.

Purpose: To introduce the process of developing an integrated radiotherapy network.

Methods And Materials: We developed a new radiotherapy treatment-planning system in 1987 that we named the Computer Tomography (CT) simulator. CT images were immediately transported to multiimage monitors and to a planning computer, and treatment planning could be performed with the patient lying on the CT couch.
