Management of patients with invasive carcinoma removed by colonoscopic polypectomy.

The management of patients with invasive carcinoma removed by colonoscopic polypectomy remains controversial. In order to assess the criteria for subsequent surgery after polypectomy, the histologic findings and outcome of 25 patients with invasive carcinomas treated by polypectomy were analyzed. Subsequent surgery was indicated when removed invasive carcinoma showed at least one of the following findings: 1) carcinoma near the surgical margin, 2) vessel invasion, 3) massive invasion, and 4) poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma.

[Microspectrophotometric DNA analysis in ulcerative colitis with special reference to its application for cancer and dysplasia diagnosis].

The DNA content was measured by microspectrophotometry from 100 specimens in 60 patients with ulcerative colitis including six complicating carcinoma. In dysplastic 23 (77%) of 30 samples showed aneuploidy or polyploidy, whereas in non-dysplastic tissues 50 (94%) of 53 samples were diploid, the difference being statistically significant. Polyploidy was often observed in the non-dysplastic mucosa of the patients complicating cancer or dysplasia.

Absorption measurements of krypton gas have been carried out to evaluate the performance of the high resolution spectroscopic facility 6VOPE using photoelectric detection. We performed orthotopic liver transplantation in male Wistar rats and investigated the effect of superoxide dismutase (SOD) on the liver graft. Animals were divided into the four following experimental groups. Group I was an untreated control group, group II received oxygen, group III received SOD and group IV received both oxygen and SOD.

[Statistical observation of crowns and bridges in Matsumoto Dental College].

A study was made of 11,425 crowns and 2,385 bridges which had been fabricated for 5,588 patients at the Prosthetic Clinic of Matsumoto Dental College during the fourteen-year period, from January 1973 to December 1986. Some of the results were as follows: 1. 753 patients, 1,585 crowns and 372 bridges in 1983 were the most numerous in all the survey years.

[An adolescent case of myelodysplastic syndrome following aplastic anemia].

A male with myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) following aplastic anemia is reported. The patient had been diagnosed as aplastic anemia at 8 years of age, and treated with blood transfusions, anabolic and glucocorticoid steroid hormones. Over a period of subsequent twelve years, he had remission and deterioration.

Expression level of the retinoblastoma susceptibility gene is elevated in simian virus 40-transformed cells.

We examined the level of mRNA of the retinoblastoma-susceptibility gene (Rb gene) in simian virus 40 (SV40)-transformed primate cells. The mRNA level of Rb gene was elevated in SV40-transformed cells compared with that in untransformed parental cells. The level of Rb message was also increased by SV40 infection on monkey kidney CV-1 cells.

Long-term prognosis of surgical patients with hepatocellular carcinoma.

We reviewed 139 resected patients with hepatocellular carcinoma at our clinic between 1963 and 1987, and using the 118 cases for the period between 1963 and 1986, we analyzed the prognostic factors that influenced the long-term prognosis by comparing the survival curves. Intraoperative irrigation and primary resection for obstructing lesions of the left colon.

The treatment of choice for left sided colonic obstruction is still controversial. We tried primary resection and anastomosis with the aid of intraoperative irrigation of the dilated proximal colon. Twenty-one cases of obstructive carcinoma of the left colon and four cases of sigmoid colon volvulus were managed using this approach.
