Thermotaxis is a model to elucidate how nervous systems sense and memorize environmental conditions to regulate behavioral strategies in Caenorhabditis elegans. The genetic and neural imaging analyses revealed molecular and cellular bases of this experience-dependent behavior. Surprisingly, thermosensory neurons themselves memorize the sensed temperatures.

Although seasonal variation in high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP) has been studied cross-sectionally and longitudinally, the results to date have been mixed. Here, to test seasonal variation in this compound with regard to within-subject, inter-day variation, we conducted a longitudinal follow-up study with repeated measurements in Japanese workers with low hsCRP. Blood samples were obtained from four male indoor daytime workers, who were aged 32-57 and commuted to offices in Kawasaki City, on six days within 2-wk windows in February and October, 2008.

Recent reports on Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT) with increased numbers of IgG4-positive plasma cells suggest that this type of HT may have a close relationship to IgG4-related disease (IgG4-RD). This unique subgroup of HT is termed as IgG4 thyroiditis and reveals distinct clinical, serological, and sonographic features from the non-IgG4 thyroiditis group. On the basis of immunostaining for IgG4, HT was divided into an IgG4 thyroiditis group and a non-IgG4 thyroiditis group.

An abscisic acid (ABA)-insensitive Vicia faba mutant, fia (fava bean impaired in ABA-induced stomatal closure) had previously been isolated. In this study, it was investigated how FIA functions in ABA signalling in guard cells of Vicia faba. Unlike ABA, methyl jasmonate (MeJA), H(2)O(2), and nitric oxide (NO) induced stomatal closure in the fia mutant.

Inhaling concomitants from Asian sand dust (ASD) may result in exacerbation of pneumonia by the pathogen. The exacerbating effect of ASD on pneumonia induced by Klebsiella pneumoniae (KP) was investigated in ICR mice. The organic substances adsorbed onto ASD collected from the atmosphere of Iki-island in Japan were excluded by heat treatment at 360°C for 30min.

We investigated the roles of catalase (CAT) in abscisic acid (ABA)-induced stomatal closure using a cat2 mutant and an inhibitor of CAT, 3-aminotriazole (AT). Constitutive reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation due to the CAT2 mutation and AT treatment did not affect stomatal aperture in the absence of ABA, whereas ABA-induced stomatal closure, ROS production, and [Ca(2+)](cyt) oscillation were enhanced.

Purpose: The aim of the study was to clarify the effect of the interval between transcatheter hepatic arterial embolization (TAE) with Lipiodol plus gelatin sponge particles and radiofrequency (RF) ablation on the extent of ablation.

Materials And Methods: Eight healthy swine were divided into four groups: RF ablation (ablation only), RF ablation immediately after TAE (immediate ablation), RF ablation 3 days after TAE (3-day ablation), and RF ablation 6 days after TAE (6-day ablation). Five ablated lesions were created in each swine (10 per group).

Squamous cells in the thyroid appear in a variety of conditions, including adenomatous goiters, malignant neoplasms, inflammatory diseases, and embryonic remnants. However the origin of the squamous cells is still under dispute. Here we report a case of an encapsulated follicular cell tumor consisting of follicular cells, basaloid squamous cells, and morphologically intermediate cells.

Introduction: When countermeasures are taken against an avian influenza (AI) pandemic in a hospital, it is essential to know the potential number of staff who would choose to be absent. The purpose of this study was to clarify how many medical staff would be willing to work during a pandemic, and requirements to secure adequate human resources.

Methods: From September to December 2008, a total of 3,152 questionnaires were sent to five private hospitals and one public hospital, which represent the core hospitals in the regions of Kyoto, Osaka, and Hyogo Prefectures.

Histologic evidence of safety after bronchial arterial embolization (BAE) with N-butyl cyanoacrylate (NBCA) should be assured. The present report describes a 78-year-old man with massive hemoptysis from lung cancer who underwent surgical lobectomy 23 days after hemostasis had been achieved via BAE with NBCA. Pathologic examination revealed that NBCA filled the lumen of bronchial branch arteries 143-1,094 μm in diameter from the lobar bronchus to subsegmental bronchus but was not seen in the lumen of the pulmonary artery or pulmonary vein.

We found that glutathione (GSH) is involved in abscisic acid (ABA)-induced stomatal closure. Regulation of ABA signaling by GSH in guard cells was investigated using an Arabidopsis mutant, cad2-1, that is deficient in the first GSH biosynthesis enzyme, γ-glutamylcysteine synthetase, and a GSH-decreasing chemical, 1-chloro-2,4-dinitrobenzene (CDNB). Glutathione contents in guard cells decreased along with ABA-induced stomatal closure.

Behaviour is a consequence of computation in neural circuits composed of massive synaptic connections among sensory neurons and interneurons. The cyclic AMP response element-binding protein (CREB) responsible for learning and memory is expressed in almost all neurons. Nevertheless, we find that the Caenorhabditis elegans CREB orthologue, CRH-1, is only required in the single bilateral thermosensory neuron AFD, for a memory-related behaviour.

Isothiocyanates (ITCs) are degradation products of glucosinolates in crucifer plants and have repellent effect on insects, pathogens and herbivores. In this study, we report that exogenously applied allyl isothiocyanate (AITC) induced stomatal closure in Arabidopsis via production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and nitric oxide (NO), and elevation of cytosolic Ca(2+) . AITC-induced stomatal closures were partially inhibited by an inhibitor of NADPH oxidase and completely inhibited by glutathione monoethyl ester (GSHmee).

Abscisic acid (ABA) signaling mechanisms have been studied in a broad variety of plant species using complementary analyses, taking advantage of different methodologies suitable for each plant species. Early studies on ABA biosynthesis using Solanum lycopersicum mutants suggested an importance of ABA synthesis in stomatal closure. To understand ABA signaling in guard cells, cellular, biochemical and electrophysiological studies in Vicia faba and Commelina communis have been conducted, providing fundamental knowledge that was further reconfirmed by molecular genetic studies of Arabidopsis.

Animals cope with environmental changes by altering behavioral strategy. Environmental information is generally received by sensory neurons in the neural circuit that generates behavior. However, although environmental temperature inevitably influences an animal's entire body, the mechanism of systemic temperature perception remains largely unknown.

Seasonal variation in circulating 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25OHD) levels related to seasonal and inter-day fluctuation in sunlight ultraviolet irradiation, may lead to misjudgments concerning 25OHD status in individual workers around threshold levels. Here, to examine seasonal and inter-day variations in plasma 25OHD, we conducted a longitudinal study involving indoor daytime workers. Subjects were four male indoor daytime workers aged 32-57 yr working in Kawasaki City, Japan.

Plants tightly control stomatal aperture in response to various environmental changes. A drought-inducible phytohormone, abscisic acid (ABA), triggers stomatal closure and ABA signaling pathway in guard cells has been well studied. Similar to ABA, methyl jasmonate (MeJA) induces stomatal closure in various plant species but MeJA signaling pathway is still far from clear.

Unveiling the neural codes for intricate behaviours is a major challenge in neuroscience. The neural circuit for the temperature-seeking behaviour of Caenorhabditis elegans is an ideal system to dissect how neurons encode sensory information for the execution of behavioural output. Here we show that the temperature-sensing neuron AFD transmits both stimulatory and inhibitory neural signals to a single interneuron AIY.

Methyl jasmonate (MeJA) induces stomatal closure similar to abscisic acid (ABA), and MeJA signaling in guard cells shares some signal components with ABA signaling. As part of this process, MeJA as well as ABA induce the elevation and oscillation of cytosolic free-calcium concentrations ([Ca(2+)](cyt)) in guard cells. While abscisic acid-induced [Ca(2+)](cyt) oscillation has been extensively studied, MeJA-induced [Ca(2+)](cyt) oscillation is less well understood.

Reactive oxygen species (ROS), including hydrogen peroxide (H(2)O(2)), are among the important second messengers in abscisic acid (ABA) signaling in guard cells. In this study, to investigate specific roles of H(2)O(2) in ABA signaling in guard cells, we examined the effects of mutations in the guard cell-expressed catalase (CAT) genes, CAT1 and CAT3, and of the CAT inhibitor 3-aminotriazole (AT) on stomatal movement. The cat3 and cat1 cat3 mutations significantly reduced CAT activities, leading to higher basal level of H(2)O(2) in guard cells, when assessed by 2',7'-dichlorodihydrofluorescein, whereas they did not affect stomatal aperture size under non-stressed condition.

We report the case of an Italian speaker (GBC) with classical Wernicke's aphasia syndrome following a vascular lesion in the left posterior middle temporal region. GBC exhibited a selective phonological deficit in spoken language production (repetition and reading) which affected all word classes irrespective of grammatical class, frequency, and length. GBC's production of number words, in contrast, was error free.
