Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a severe anxiety disorder that affects women more than men. About 30% of patients suffering from PTSD develop the disorder by witnessing a traumatic event happen to someone else. However, as the focus has remained on those directly experiencing the traumatic event, whether indirectly acquired fear memories that underlie PTSD have the same molecular signature as those that are directly acquired remains unknown.

Over 90% of protein degradation in eukaryotic cells occurs through the ubiquitin-proteasome system (UPS). In this system, the ubiquitin protein can bind to a substrate on its own or it can form a chain with multiple ubiquitin molecules in a process called polyubiquitination. There are 8 different sites on ubiquitin at which polyubiquitin chains can be formed, the second most abundant of which, lysine-63 (K63), is independent of the degradation process, though this mark has rarely been studied in the brain or during learning-dependent synaptic plasticity.

The ubiquitin-proteasome system (UPS) controls the majority of protein degradation in cells and dysregulation of the UPS has been implicated in the pathophysiology of numerous neurodegenerative disorders, including Alzheimer's disease. Further, strong evidence supports a critical role for the UPS in synaptic plasticity and memory formation. However, while proteasome function is known to decrease broadly in the brain across the lifespan, whether it changes in the hippocampus, a region critical for memory storage and among the first impacted in Alzheimer's disease, at rest and following learning in the aged brain remains unknown.

Purpose: The spine, hip, and knee are anatomically and biomechanically connected. Total hip arthroplasty (THA) and total knee arthroplasty (TKA) are commonly employed to treat degenerative changes in the hip and knee, while fusion is used for spine degeneration. Spine deformity correction results in changes in sagittal alignment and pelvic parameters, and patients with stiff spines have higher rates of THA dislocation and revision due to instability.

Background: In November 2020, Island Health, with the support of the British Columbia Ministry of Health, introduced the Hospital at Home (HaH) care model at Victoria General Hospital in Victoria, British Columbia. Given the acuity of the patients anticipated to receive care through this model, questions arose regarding how the delivery of clinical pharmacy services on which inpatients rely on could be included. With limited supporting evidence for the inclusion of a clinical pharmacist, Island Health launched the HaH program with 2 clinical pharmacists who provide services 7 days a week during daytime hours.

From film and television to graphic storytelling, tonal music can accompany visual narratives in a variety of contexts. The apprehension of both musical and narrative sequences involves temporal categories in ordered patterning, which raises an interesting question: Do musical progressions and visual narratives rely on shared sequence processing mechanisms? If this is the case, then cues from music and sequential static images, when presented simultaneously, should interact during audiovisual online processing. We tested this question by measuring reaction times to target picture panels appearing in visual narrative (comic strip) sequences, which were presented panel by panel and synchronized with musical chord progressions.

Objectives: The International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation, in collaboration with drowning researchers from around the world, aimed to review the evidence addressing seven key resuscitation interventions: 1) immediate versus delayed resuscitation; (2) compression first versus ventilation first strategy; (3) compression-only CPR versus standard CPR (compressions and ventilations); (4) ventilation with and without equipment; (5) oxygen administration prior to hospital arrival; (6) automated external defibrillation first versus cardiopulmonary resuscitation first strategy; (7) public access defibrillation programmes.

Methods: The review included studies relating to adults and children who had sustained a cardiac arrest following drowning with control groups and reported patient outcomes. Searches were run from database inception through to April 2023.

Over 25 years ago, a seminal paper demonstrated that the ubiquitin-proteasome system (UPS) was involved in activity-dependent synaptic plasticity. Interest in this topic began to expand around 2008 following another seminal paper showing that UPS-mediated protein degradation controlled the "destabilization" of memories following retrieval, though we remained with only a basic understanding of how the UPS regulated activity- and learning-dependent synaptic plasticity. However, over the last 10 years there has been an explosion of papers on this topic that has significantly changed our understanding of how ubiquitin-proteasome signaling regulates synaptic plasticity and memory formation.

Background: In 2005, the Food and Drug Administration placed a black-box warning (the most stringent warning for drugs) on all nonaspirin nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) stating that these agents may cause heart attacks and/or strokes. No level I evidence demonstrates that nonselective NSAIDs increase cardiovascular risk. An alternative hypothesis is that hip and knee osteoarthritis (OA) indirectly causes cardiovascular disease (CVD) through decreased activity and NSAIDs are correlated with CVD as an arthritis treatment.
