Leukemia cutis is capable of presenting in a variety of clinical and histologic guises. We describe a 75-year-old man with a recent diagnosis of M0 acute myelogenous leukemia, who presented with multiple pruritic erythematous papules on his chest and back. Microscopically, the epidermis showed acrosyringeal-based acantholysis consistent with transient acantholytic dermatosis (TAD), associated with exocytosis of atypical hematolymphoid cells.

While the androgens, including dihydrotestosterone (DHT), have been implicated in the development of androgenetic alopecia (AGA), the exact mechanism by which they exert their effects is unknown. As apoptosis is an integral component of the normal cycling of human hair, we investigated individuals clinically affected by AGA to assess whether objective differences in the expression of apoptosis related immunohistochemical markers could be observed in scalp biopsies. Specimens from 13 alopecic male cadavers were stained with bcl-2 and terminal deoxynucleotidetransferase dUTP fluorescein nick end-labeling (TUNEL) methods to assess apoptotic activity in affected and unaffected areas of the scalp.

Background: An existing problem in contemporary pathology is the classification and distinction of spindle cell soft tissue tumors of the skin. Markers such as alpha-smooth muscle actin (alpha-SMA) and desmin, considered specific for smooth muscle cell (SMC), have been shown to be expressed in a variety of fibroblastic and myofibroblastic processes. High-molecular-weight caldesmon (h-caldesmon), one of two isoforms, is reported to be expressed exclusively by SMC and has recently been shown to be a specific marker of SMC tumors.

Background: Although benign tumors derived from the nerve sheath perineurial cell have been described from a variety of anatomic sites and are known to be a component of a number of benign neoplasms, malignant nerve sheath tumors of perineurial origin are exceedingly uncommon.

Methods: We report an unusual case of a 70-year-old male who presented with a rapidly growing mass of the left arm, subsequently shown to be a malignant nerve sheath tumor with perineurial differentiation. A brief microscopic differential diagnosis and review of the literature are discussed.

The adapter protein tumor necrosis factor receptor (TNFR)1-associated death domain (TRADD) plays an essential role in recruiting signaling molecules to the TNFRI receptor complex at the cell membrane. Here we show that TRADD contains a nuclear export and import sequence that allow shuttling between the nucleus and the cytoplasm. In the absence of export, TRADD is found within nuclear structures that are associated with promyelocytic leukemia protein (PML) nuclear bodies.

Background: Rhabdomyomatous mesenchymal hamartoma (RMH) is a rare congenital lesion of the dermis and soft tissues consisting of a disordered and varied collection of mature adipose tissue, skeletal muscle, adnexal elements and nerve bundles. This entity exists under various names including striated muscle hamartoma, congenital midline hamartoma, and hamartoma of cutaneous adnexa and mesenchyme. Several published cases report the occurrence of RMH within the setting of other uncommon congenital abnormalities.

Most of the existing anti-human immunodeficiency virus agents enter the central nervous system (CNS) inefficiently and thus may allow slow viral replication in the brain. This may provide a sanctuary for the virus in the CNS and contribute to the development of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome dementia complex. This study evaluates a prodrug approach to improve the CNS delivery of the reverse transcriptase inhibitor 2',3'-dideoxyinosine (ddI) in combination with inhibition of P-glycoprotein-mediated efflux to increase the CNS delivery of the protease inhibitor nelfinavir and to determine whether any unanticipated drug interactions occur in this combination therapy.

The consensus octapeptide repeat motif of the barley seed storage protein C hordein, Pro-Gln-Gln-Pro-Phe-Pro-Gln-Gln, forms the epitope of two anti-prolamin monoclonal antibodies (Mabs), IFRN 0061 and 0614. The Mabs were found to exhibit unusual temperature-dependent binding characteristics, recognising C hordein and a peptide corresponding to the consensus repeat at 5 degrees C but not at 37 degrees C, as determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The K(d) of IFRN 0614 for the consensus peptide was found to be 1.
