Objective: The present study evaluates the potential relationship between hippocampal atrophy and EEG brain rhythmicity, as assessed by relative band power and alpha frequency indices in a cohort of subjects with mild cognitive impairment (MCI).
Methods: Eighty-eight subjects falling within the definition of MCI patients were enrolled. All subjects underwent EEG recording and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).

Objective: We evaluated the changes induced by cerebrovascular (CV) damage on brain rhythmicity recorded by electroencephalography (EEG) in a cohort of subjects with mild cognitive impairment (MCI).
Methods: We enrolled 99 MCI subjects (Mini-Mental State Examination [MMSE] mean score 26.6).
The contribution of different proteolytic systems, in particular calpains and effector caspases, in apoptotic cell death is still controversial. In this paper, we show that during cisplatin-induced apoptosis of human metastatic melanoma cells, calpain activation, as measured in intact cells by two different fluorescent substrates, is an early event, taking place well before caspase-3/-7 activation, and progressively increasing during 48 h of treatment. Such activation appears to be independent from any intracellular calcium imbalance; in fact, an increase of cytosolic calcium along with emptying of the reticular stores occur only at very late stages, uniquely in frankly apoptotic, detached cells.

Objective: We aimed to determine whether extruded rice grains fortified with micronized ground ferric pyrophosphate (MGFP) would increase body iron stores in children.
Design: In a double-blind, 7-mo, school-based feeding trial in Bangalore, India, iron-depleted, 6-13-y-old children (n = 184) were randomly assigned to receive either a rice-based lunch meal fortified with 20 mg Fe as MGFP or an identical but unfortified control meal.
Objective: Chronic lead poisoning and iron deficiency are concentrated in urban children from lower socioeconomic strata, and both impair neurocognitive development. Our study objective was to determine if iron fortification reduces blood lead levels in urban, lead-exposed, iron-deficient children in Bangalore, India.
Design, Setting, And Participants: A randomized, double-blind, controlled school-based feeding trial was done in 5- to 13-year-old iron-deficient children (n = 186).

Objective: We compared the relative bioavailability (RBV) of ferrous sulfate in an experimental form of micronized dispersible ferric pyrophosphate (MDFP) in a wheat-milk infant cereal given with and without ascorbic acid with the RBV of MDFP from a processed and unprocessed rice meal.
Design: A crossover design was used to measure iron absorption in young women (n = 26) from test meals fortified with isotopically labeled [57Fe]-MDFP and [58Fe]-ferrous sulfate, based on erythrocyte incorporation of stable isotope labels 14 d later.

Background: Although studies suggest that inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) has a significant impact on an individual's health-related quality of life, the added weight of other health conditions and comorbidities has not been investigated. The purpose of this study was to expand on prior research by taking into account the impact of other chronic health conditions on the health-related quality of life of individuals with IBD, and to develop a model to help clinicians understand the relative impact of various predictors of their patients' physical and mental health-related quality of life.
Methods: 615 patients from the gastroenterology outpatient practice of a large, urban university hospital received a self-administered survey including questions about their health conditions, the severity of their bowel symptoms, and their health-related quality of life (measured using the SF-36 instrument).

The authors tested 2 working hypotheses of the related electroencephalographic (EEG) coherence: disconnection, defined as a sign of a reduced coordination within the frontoparietal and interhemispheric networks, and cooperation, defined as a reflection of the reorganization of the brain sensorimotor networks. Results showed that, compared with healthy controls, patients with mild AD had an unreactive and abnormally low interhemispheric EEG coherence and an unreactive and abnormally high frontoparietal EEG coherence.

High resolution EEG technologies are available to drastically increase the spatial resolution of the raw EEG. Objective: The objective was to optimize and validate a thyroglobulin assay on dried whole blood spots and to evaluate thyroglobulin as an indicator of thyroid response to iodized salt.
To determine if introduction of iodized salt induces thyroid autoimmunity in goitrous children, we conducted a prospective trial in iodine-deficient Moroccan schoolchildren (n = 323). Local salt was iodized at 25 microg iodine per gram of salt and distributed to households. Before introduction of iodized salt and at 10, 20, 40, and 52 weeks, we measured antithyroid peroxidase antibodies (TPO-Ab), antithyroglobulin antibodies (Tg-Ab), urinary iodine (UI), and thyroid hormones, and examined the thyroid using ultrasound.
