Article Synopsis
  • - Tracheal intubation is typically advised for coma patients, but its effectiveness in those with acute poisoning remains unclear; a study aimed to evaluate whether withholding intubation would affect outcomes for these patients.
  • - The multicenter randomized trial took place across 20 emergency departments and 1 ICU in France and involved 225 comatose patients with severe poisoning, comparing a conservative approach to standard intubation practices.
  • - Results indicated that patients in the conservative treatment group had better clinical outcomes, lower intubation rates, fewer adverse events, and a reduced incidence of pneumonia compared to those receiving routine intubation.

The stimulator of interferon genes (STING) protein is a cornerstone of the human immune response. Its activation by cGAMP in the presence of cytosolic DNA stimulates the production of type I interferons and inflammatory cytokines. In the human population, several STING variants exist and exhibit dramatic differences in their activity, impacting the efficiency of the host defense against infections.

The advanced optical and wetting properties of metamaterials, plasmonic structures, and nanostructured surfaces have been repeatedly demonstrated in lab-scale experiments. Extending these exciting discoveries to large-area surfaces can transform technologies ranging from solar energy and virtual reality to biosensors and anti-microbial surfaces. Although photolithography is ideal for nanopatterning of small, expensive items such as computer chips, nanopatterning of large-area surfaces is virtually impossible with traditional lithographic techniques due to their exceptionally slow patterning rates and high costs.

Introduction: A nationwide cervical cancer (CC) screening program was implemented in France in 2018. Asymptomatic women are invited for a cytological test once every 3 years (age, 25-29 years), and an HPV test every 5 years (age, 30-65 years). We investigated the characteristics of women who are resistant to CC screening.

The treatment of recurrent hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) after liver transplantation is difficult due to the lack of effective treatment options. The available evidence on the emerging immunotherapy in liver transplantation is based on anecdotal experiences and requires additional investigations. To determine the efficacy and safety of immunotherapy in liver transplant recipients, we report three cases of recurrent metastatic HCC after liver transplantation who were treated with nivolumab as off-label salvage therapy.

Introduction: Prostate cancer (PCa) is the most common cancer amongst men in 2018 in Europe. The issue of PCa screening in the general population has been debated following the publication of international European (ERSPC) and North American (PLCO) studies. There is currently no organised PCa screening.

Subjective sleep assessment in cancer patients poorly correlates with actigraphy parameters that usually encompass multiple nights. We aimed to determine the objective actigraphy measures that best correlated with subjective sleep ratings on a night-by-night basis in cancer patients. Thirty-one cancer patients daily self-rated sleep disturbances using the single dedicated item of the MD Anderson Symptom Inventory (0-10 scale) with 18 other items, and continuously wore a wrist actigraph for 30 days.

Facio-Scapulo Humeral dystrophy (FSHD) is the third most common myopathy, affecting 1 amongst 10,000 individuals (FSHD1, OMIM #158900). This autosomal dominant pathology is associated in 95% of cases with genetic and epigenetic alterations in the subtelomeric region at the extremity of the long arm of chromosome 4 (q arm). A large proportion of the remaining 5% of cases carry a mutation in the SMCHD1 gene (FSHD2, OMIM #158901).

FOLFIRINOX is one of the most effective reference regimens in the 1st line treatment of locally advanced (LA) and metastatic pancreatic cancer (mPC), despite its high toxicity. We evaluated our real-life experience with "patient-tailored intent to treat FOLFIRINOX" in patients with LA or mPC compared to other reports along with the pivotal phase III trial. We analyzed data from all consecutive patients with pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma treated with dose-modified FOLFIRINOX in 2016 at Paul Brousse University Hospital.

Background: Liver metastases of breast cancer are frequent and can recur even after "complete/R0" resection in combination with systemic and hormonal treatments. The aim of this study was to analyze throughout repeat hepatectomies for liver metastases the evolution of PI3KCA gene mutational status.

Methods: All liver metastases nodules (n = 70) from 19 women who underwent at least 2 liver resections were reexamined.

Background: Lung cancer (LC) screening (LCS) with annual low-dose computed tomography scans has been seen to reduce the specific and overall mortality in selected populations. However, participation is key to successful screening programs. The EDIFICE (etude sur le dépistage des cancers et ses facteurs de compliance [survey on cancer screening and compliance factors]) nationwide observational surveys are used to assess behavior related to cancer screening programs in France.

Although e-cigarette use is increasing dramatically, numerous concerns persist regarding toxicity and their role in smoking cessation. We assessed beliefs and behavior regarding e-cigarettes in an adult French population. The 4th French nationwide observational survey, EDIFICE 4, was conducted among representative samples of 1602 laypersons (age, 40-75 years) from 12 June-10 July 2014, using the quota method.

Background: Resection of breast cancer liver metastases (BCLM) combined with systemic treatment is increasingly accepted but not offered as therapeutic option. New evidence of the additional value of surgery in these patients is scarce while prognoses without surgery remains poor.

Patients And Methods: For this case matched analysis, all nationally registered patients with BCLM confined to the liver in the Netherlands (systemic group; N = 523) were selected and compared with patients who received systemic treatment and underwent hepatectomy (resection group; N = 139) at a hepatobiliary centre in France.

Background: The aim of EDIFICE surveys is to improve insight into the behavior of the French population with regard to cancer prevention and participation in screening programs. Via the colorectal cancer screening program, all average-risk individuals in the 50-74-year age group are invited every 2 years to do a guaiac-based or, since April 2015, an immunochemical fecal occult blood test.

Methods: The fifth edition of the nationwide observational survey was conducted by phone interviews using the quota method.

Article Synopsis
  • Most individuals in the study (96%) recognized that smoking is a major risk factor for lung cancer, but misconceptions persist, with 34% believing that smoking 10 or fewer cigarettes per day poses no risk.
  • Half of the current smokers did not see themselves as at higher risk for lung cancer, although smokers with nicotine dependence did have a heightened awareness of their risk compared to non-dependent smokers.
  • The study suggests that awareness campaigns should focus on correcting beliefs about light smoking and specifically address the concerns of heavy smokers and those with a long history of smoking.

Article Synopsis
  • We conducted a study on cancer screening and social vulnerability by surveying individuals aged 50-75 with no cancer history.
  • Our findings showed that while social vulnerability initially had no impact on screening participation in 2011, by 2014 it was linked to decreased uptake of colorectal and prostate screenings, as well as reduced compliance with recommended intervals for breast and cervical screenings.
  • By 2016, these negative trends for vulnerable populations persisted and even spread to additional cancer screenings, highlighting the need for ongoing monitoring and targeted awareness campaigns.

Accessibility to cancer screening in France has been facilitated by the implementation of organised programs (breast cancer and colorectal cancer) and by national recommendations (cervical cancer). Personal motivation may also trigger participation in prostate cancer screening. This paper proposes an overview of attitudes toward cancer screening among the general population over a period of more than 10 years and the perception of this behaviour by general practitioners.
