Impact of stent diameter on outcomes following percutaneous coronary intervention with second-generation drug-eluting stents: Results from a large single-center registry.

Background: In patients treated with bare metal stents and first-generation drug-eluting stents (DES) smaller stent diameter (SD) has been associated with worse long term outcomes after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). Data on the impact of small SD on outcomes after PCI with second-generation DES is scarce.

Methods: Consecutive patients treated with second-generation DES between 2010 and 2016 were included in a single tertiary center.

Background: Notwithstanding the significant advances in automated imaging techniques in the past 2 decades, subjective evaluation of the optic disc still remains an important part of glaucoma propaedeutic. In places with limited resources and a high demand for ophthalmic care, anatomical evaluation of glaucoma cases often relies solely on slit-lamp-based fundus biomicroscopic examination, which is frequently performed without mydriasis.

Objective: The aim of this study was to compare metrics related to fundus biomicroscopy examination of the optic nerve head and peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (pRNFL) with and without mydriasis.

Histological features of restenosis associated with paclitaxel drug-coated balloon: implications for therapy.

Purpose: To investigate the cellular and extracellular changes induced by drug-coated balloons (DCB) in the treatment of superficial femoral artery (SFA) restenosis, and to compare histopathological features with those observed after plain old balloon angioplasty (POBA) from the same patients.

Methods And Results: Plaque samples for five patients with SFA restenosis (first-time) after POBA were collected using atherectomy and DCB. These samples constitute the POBA restenosis group.

Introduction: miRNAs are small non-coding RNAs, some of which are expressed in adipose tissues, are present in the circulation, and are regulated in obesity. Bariatric surgery (BS) has been proposed to lead to activation of brown adipose tissue, an effect that may be related to beneficial effects of BS on systemic metabolism. Here, we evaluated circulating levels of miR-92a and miR-99b, two miRNAs proposed as biomarkers of brown fat activity, in a cohort of patients with severe obesity before and after BS, and studied their potential relationship with BS-associated improvements in metabolic parameters.

Conventional breeding of citrus types demands a long-term effort due to their complex reproductive biology and long juvenile period. As a compelling alternative, genetic engineering of mature tissues allows the insertion of specific traits into specific elite cultivars, including well-known and widely grown varieties and rootstocks, thus reducing the time and costs involved in improving and evaluating them. Conventional breeding for resistance to CTV in citrus varieties has been largely unsuccessful as well as cloning of the genes conferring resistance to specific citrus types.

Citrus tristeza virus: Host RNA Silencing and Virus Counteraction.

To dissect the host RNA silencing response incited by citrus tristeza virus (CTV, genus Closterovirus), a (+) ssRNA of ~19300 nt, and the counter reaction deployed by the virus via its three RNA silencing suppressors (RSS), the small RNAs (sRNAs) of three virus-host combinations were deep sequenced. The subsequent analysis indicated that CTV sRNAs (1) constitute more than half of the total sRNAs in the susceptible Mexican lime and sweet orange, while only 3.5% in the restrictive sour orange; (2) are mostly of 21-22 nt, with those of (+) sense predominating slightly; and (3) derive from all the CTV genome, as evidenced by its entire recomposition from viral sRNA contigs but adopt an asymmetric pattern with a hotspot mapping at the 3'-terminal ~2500 nt.

Incremental effects of diabetes mellitus and chronic kidney disease in medial arterial calcification: Synergistic pathways for peripheral artery disease progression.

Diabetes mellitus (DM) and chronic kidney disease (CKD) separately are known to facilitate the progression of medial arterial calcification (MAC) in patients with symptomatic peripheral artery disease (PAD), but their combined effect on MAC and associated mediators of calcification is not well studied. The association of MAC and calcification inducer bone morphogenetic protein (BMP-2) and inhibitor fetuin-A, with PAD, is well known. Our aim was to investigate the association of MAC with alterations in BMP-2 and fetuin-A protein expression in patients with PAD with DM and/or CKD.

The Effects of Cobalt Protoporphyrin IX and Tricarbonyldichlororuthenium (II) Dimer Treatments and Its Interaction with Nitric Oxide in the Locus Coeruleus of Mice with Peripheral Inflammation.

Heme oxygenase 1 (HO-1) and carbon monoxide were shown to normalize oxidative stress and inflammatory reactions induced by neuropathic pain in the central nervous system, but their effects in the locus coeruleus (LC) of animals with peripheral inflammation and their interaction with nitric oxide are unknown. In wild-type (WT) and knockout mice for neuronal (NOS1-KO) or inducible (NOS2-KO) nitric oxide synthases with inflammatory pain induced by complete Freund's adjuvant (CFA), we assessed: 1) antinociceptive actions of cobalt protoporphyrin IX (CoPP), an HO-1 inducer; 2) effects of CoPP and tricarbonyldichlororuthenium(II)dimer (CORM-2), a carbon monoxide-liberating compound, on the expression of HO-1, NOS1, NOS2, CD11b/c, GFAP,and mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPK)in the LC. CoPP reduced inflammatory pain in different time-dependent manners in WT and KO mice.

Integrating PROMIS® computerized adaptive tests into a web-based intervention for prostate cancer.

Objective: This study outlined the implementation and feasibility of delivering PROMIS® computer adaptive tests (CATs) using a web-based method to evaluate the impact of a technological adaptation of Cognitive-Behavioral Stress Management (CBSM) on the psychosocial functioning of men with advanced prostate cancer (APC) undergoing hormone therapy.

Method: Patients were randomized to a CBSM group intervention (n = 95) or a health promotion (HP) attention-matched control condition (n = 97). Participants attended all sessions via video conference using tablets, and completed PROMIS® computer adaptive tests (CATs) assessing anxiety, depression, fatigue, pain interference, and physical function weekly during the 10-week intervention.

Herein, we demonstrate that Gal-3 also plays other important roles in infection.

We introduce a generic method based on the microservice architecture, where software tools are encapsulated as Docker containers that can be connected into scientific workflows and executed using the Kubernetes container orchestrator.

Results: We developed a Virtual Research Environment (VRE) which facilitates rapid integration of new tools and developing scalable and interoperable workflows for performing metabolomics data analysis.
