A study has been made of the effects of H2 antagonists in patients with perennial allergic rhinitis with sensitivity towards a single allergen: parietaria. During two years of observation. The patients underwent three cycles of treatment "a la demande".

Clinical experience with ofloxacin (DL-8280) in the therapy of various infections.

Thirty-four hospitalized patients with various infections: 19 with typhoid fever, 4 with gastroenteritis, 7 with lower respiratory tract infections, 2 with biliary tract infections, 1 with brucellosis and 1 with infection of necrotic ulceration of the feet, were treated with ofloxacin at a daily dosage ranging between 600 and 900 mg orally. Thirty-one of 34 patients (91.18%) completely recovered and pathogens were eradicated.

[Comparative evaluation of norfloxacin and cinoxacin in the therapy of complicated infections of the urinary tract].

A randomized clinical study was conducted in order to compare the effectiveness of norfloxacin and cinoxacin in complicated urinary tract infections. Norfloxacin proved effective in 80% of the 40 patients treated, cinoxacin in only 60%.

The association of Type IIB von Willebrand disease (vWD) with chronic persistent thrombocytopenia and spontaneous platelet aggregation has recently been recognized. It has been shown that IIB von Willebrand factor (vWF) can initiate platelet aggregation by binding to the platelet glycoprotein (GP) lb receptor and inducing exposure of the GpIIb/IIIa fibrinogen receptor. In this study we demonstrate the increased binding of Type IIB Tampa vWF with normal platelets when compared with nonthrombocytopenic Type IIB vWF.

Clinical experience with pefloxacin in the therapy of typhoid fever.

Thirty hospitalized patients (22 men and eight women), aged between 15 and 41 years (mean = 25.4 years), with severe proven typhoid sepsis were treated with pefloxacin at daily dose of 1200 mg, divided in three doses, intravenously for the first five days and orally for the following ten days of treatment. All patients completely recovered from infection and pathogens were eradicated after 30 days of follow-up.

Purification and characterization of eight class 5 outer membrane protein variants from a clone of Neisseria meningitidis serogroup A.

Methods published for the purification of P.II proteins from Neisseria gonorrhoea have been modified to allow the purification of class 5 proteins from Neisseria meningitidis serogroup A bacteria. The five class 5 protein electrophoretic variants detected within an epidemic in the Gambia (a, b, c, d, and e) and three other variants (f, g, and h) found within other isolates of the same clone in West Africa have been purified with yields of 6-28 mg.

Cefoperazone compared with chloramphenicol in the treatment of typhoid fever.

The authors have conducted an open randomized study to compare the clinical efficacy and safety of cefoperazone with those of chloramphenicol in the treatment of typhoid fever. They studied 56 subjects (28 in each group), 36 males and 20 females, whose average age was 25.9 years.

[Changes in serum immunoglobulins in allergic rhinitis induced by histamine H2 antagonists].

The authors discuss their double-blind experiments on 40 allergic rhinitis affected patients, aged 15 to 50 years. Twenty were treated with H2 antagonists (Cimetidine) and twenty with placebo. The clinical assessment of the effectiveness of the treatment was carried out on a range of subjective and objective parameters taken before and after treatment.

Characterization and restriction analysis of the P sex factor and the cryptic plasmid of Vibrio cholerae strain V58.

The P plasmid of Vibrio cholerae is a derepressed sex factor restricted to V. cholerae and has been shown to express surface exclusion. We have isolated the plasmids of strain V58 and have found that in addition to P, two further cryptic plasmids are also present.

A physical map of the chromosomal region determining O-antigen biosynthesis in Vibrio cholerae O1.

We have previously described the cosmid cloning of the genes determining the biosynthesis of the Inaba and Ogawa O-antigens of the lipopolysaccharides of Vibrio cholerae O1 (Manning et al., 1986). By Southern hybridization analysis of chromosomal and cosmid DNA, and heteroduplex analysis between the clones we have been able to precisely define the region of contiguous chromosomal DNA in the vicinity of the O-antigen-encoding region.

[Bladder instability in patients with prostatic hypertrophy. Urodynamic study].

A urodynamic study was conducted in 37 patients with benign prostatic hypertrophy before and five months after transvesical prostatic adenomectomy. Prior to the operation, 17 patients had cystometric signs of unstable bladder which persisted after the operation in only two patients. Normal detrusor function was restored in the other 15 patients.
