The use of 1060-nm wavelength light emitted from a high-power diode laser is a novel method for the removal of vascular lesions. Two Caucasian women with Fitzpatrick skin phototype II, who had various vascular lesions, were treated with a 1060-nm high-power diode laser, applying a fluence of 120 J/cm and a single pulse duration of 74 milliseconds. Immediate results were that the cherry angiomas became dark and a scab was formed (that remitted 2 weeks after treatment); the telangiectasias and venulectasias disappeared immediately.

This article argues that evaluators could better deal with unintended consequences if they improved their methods of systematically and methodically combining empirical data collection and model building over the life cycle of an evaluation. This process would be helpful because it can increase the timespan from when the need for a change in methodology is first suspected to the time when the new element of the methodology is operational. The article begins with an explanation of why logic models are so important in evaluation, and why the utility of models is limited if they are not continually revised based on empirical evaluation data.

Interpatient variability in the safety and efficacy of oral anticoagulation with warfarin presents several challenges to clinicians, thus underscoring the emergent need for new orally available anticoagulants with predictable pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic profiles and ability to target circulating clotting factors. Seven compounds including rivaroxaban, apixaban, betrixaban, and eribaxaban are orally available direct inhibitors of activated factor X currently in development for the prevention and treatment of venous thromboembolism and for thromboprophylaxis in patients with atrial fibrillation or following an acute coronary syndrome. At doses used in phase 2 and 3 clinical trials, rivaroxaban and apixaban demonstrated a predictable onset of effect, maximal plasma concentration, and half-life that was unaffected by age, renal, or hepatic disease.

The first synthesis of a chiral periodic mesoporous organosilica (PMO) carrying benzylic ether bridging groups is reported. By hydrolysis and condensation of the new designed chiral organosilica precursor 1,4-bis(triethoxysilyl)-2-(1-methoxyethyl)benzene (BTEMEB) in the presence of the non-ionic oligomeric surfactant Brij 76 as supramolecular structure-directing agent under acidic conditions, an ordered mesoporous chiral benzylic ether-bridged hybrid material with a high specific surface area was obtained. The chiral PMO precursor was synthesized in a four-step reaction from 1,4-dibromobenzene as the starting compound.

Mesoporous organic-inorganic hybrid materials, a new class of materials characterized by large specific surface areas and pore sizes between 2 and 15 nm, have been obtained through the coupling of inorganic and organic components by template synthesis. The incorporation of functionalities can be achieved in three ways: by subsequent attachment of organic components onto a pure silica matrix (grafting), by simultaneous reaction of condensable inorganic silica species and silylated organic compounds (co-condensation, one-pot synthesis), and by the use of bissilylated organic precursors that lead to periodic mesoporous organosilicas (PMOs). This Review gives an overview of the preparation, properties, and potential applications of these materials in the areas of catalysis, sorption, chromatography, and the construction of systems for controlled release of active compounds, as well as molecular switches, with the main focus being on PMOs.

Periodic mesoporous organosilicas (PMOs) represent a new class of organic-inorganic hybrid materials suitable for a broad range of applications such as chromatography, catalysis, sensing and microelectronics. Unlike in organic functionalized mesoporous silica phases obtained via grafting or co-condensation procedures the organic groups in PMOs are direct parts of the 3D framework structure, thus giving raise to enormous possibilities to tune their chemical and physical properties in designated ways by varying the structure of the precursors. In this review the distinctive features of PMOs are discussed, the latest developments concerning compositions, structures, morphologies and potential applications are figured out and finally a brief outlook of future aspects is given.

Orinoco River influence in the Caribbean Sea, characterized by high nutrient input, causes a decrease of Trichodesmium populations. The Caribbean Time Series (CaTS) station, south of Puerto Rico (17 degrees 36'N 67 degrees 00'W), was monitored for 25 months in order to observe the Trichodesmium abundance pattern and the presence of the river plume. The transfer of conditioned modulation across conditioned stimuli (CS) and unconditioned stimuli (US) was examined in 3 experiments that used Pavlovian appetitive training procedures with rats. In Experiment 1, after training in a positive patterning discrimination (X-->A+/X-/A-), X increased conditioned responding elicited by another trained-then-extinguished CS as long as that CS had been trained with the same US as was used in discrimination training. In Experiment 2, after training with a feature-negative discrimination (X-->A-/A+), X inhibited conditioned responding elicited by another trained-then-extinguished CS as long as that CS had been trained with the same US.

Objective: To determine the long-term efficacy of the transvaginal vesical neck suspension in the treatment of stress urinary incontinence in a general uro-gynecology practice.

Methods: The charts of all patients (n = 168) treated at our hospital with a transvaginal technique for vesical neck suspension, over a 5 year period (1990-1995) were reviewed.
