The molecular mechanisms behind aneurysmal subarachnoid haemorrhage (aSAH) are still poorly understood. Expression patterns of miRNAs may help elucidate the post-transcriptional gene expression in aSAH. Here, we evaluate the global miRNAs expression profile (miRnome) of patients with aSAH to identify potential biomarkers.

Background: Eliciting factors affecting distribution of traditional knowledge (TK) and cultural importance of plant resources is central in ethnobiology. Socio-demographic attributes and ecological apparency hypothesis (EAH) have been widely documented as drivers of TK distribution, but their synergistic effect is poorly documented. Here, we focused on Borassus aethiopum, a socio-economic important agroforestry palm in Africa, analyzing relationships between the number of use-reports and cultural importance on one hand, and informant socio-demographic attributes (age category and gender) on the other hand, considering the EAH at multi-scale contexts.

The use of performance enhancing drugs is not only common in humans, but also in animal sports, including racing of horses, greyhounds and pigeons. The development of accurate analytical procedures to detect doping agents in sports is crucial in order to protect the fair-play of the game, avoid financial fraud in the attribution of eventual awards and, even more important, to protect the animals from harmful drugs and/or dangerous dosage regimens. Effects of the monoamine stabilizer (-)-OSU6162 on locomotor and sensorimotor responses predictive of antipsychotic activity.

The monoamine stabilizer (3S)-3-[3-(methenesulfonyl)phenyl]-1-propylpiperidine hidrochloride [(-)-OSU6162] is a promising compound for the treatment of neurological and psychiatric disorders, such as schizophrenia. Here, we tested the hypothesis that (-)-OSU6162 prevents hyperlocomotion and sensorimotor deficits in prepulse inhibition of the startle response (PPI) induced by psychomimetic drugs. Male Swiss mice received injections of (-)-OSU6162 (1, 3, 10, or 30 mg/kg), and their motor responses were investigated in the open field and in the catalepsy tests, which predicts liability to induce sedation and extrapyramidal side effects, respectively.

Replacement of the 6-Min Walk Test With Glittre ADL Test and Scores From the PFSDQ-M and HAP Questionnaires in the BODE Index.

Purpose: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease reduces functional capacity, which is strongly correlated with the morbidity and mortality of patients. The BODE index considers the multifactorial nature of the disease, including the functional capacity measured by the 6-min walk test (6MWT), and this index predicts the mortality in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Our aim was to assess whether association exists between the original BODE index and the modified BODE index by replacing the 6MWT with the scores from the Pulmonary Functional Status and Dyspnea Questionnaire-Modified version (PFSDQ-M), Human Activity Profile (HAP) questionnaire, and the results of the Glittre ADL Test (TGlittre).

Inhibition of dopamine transporter (DAT) by GBR12909 has been proposed as a pharmacological model of mania related to bipolar disorder (BD). Here we tested the hypothesis that GBR12909 injection impairs habituation and induces hyperlocomotion in mice, along with changes in cytokines and neurotrophic factors levels, as observed in BD patients. We also tested if lithium carbonate, sodium valproate and aripiprazole prevent GBR12909-induced locomotion.

The prospective European Society for Immunodeficiencies (ESID)-APDS registry aims to characterize the disease course, identify outcome predictors, and evaluate treatment responses.

miRNome Expression Analysis Reveals New Players on Leprosy Immune Physiopathology.

Leprosy remains as a public health problem and its physiopathology is still not fully understood. MicroRNAs (miRNA) are small RNA non-coding that can interfere with mRNA to regulate gene expression. A few studies using DNA chip microarrays have explored the expression of miRNA in leprosy patients using a predetermined set of genes as targets, providing interesting findings regarding the regulation of immune genes.

This drug is indicated for dyslipidemias treatment and can help to decrease the level of "bad cholesterol" and can consequently reduce the development of atherosclerosis and the risk of heart diseases. ROS was developed by Astra-Zeneca and it was approved in 2003 by the FDA in the United States.

C57BL/6 mice were treated with Physostigmine (PHYS), an acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitor, and were submitted to the social defeat stress.

Power-line grids are increasingly expanding worldwide, as well as their negative impacts on avifauna, namely the direct mortality through collision and electrocution, the reduction of breeding performance, and the barrier effect. On the other hand, some bird species can apparently benefit from the presence of power lines, for example perching for hunting purposes or nesting on electricity towers. In this perspective essay, we reviewed the scientific literature on both costs and benefits for avifauna coexisting with power lines.

This work proposes for this purpose an innovative electrochemical immunosensing system using a photovoltaic cell as an electrical reading box.

Assessment of fluid responsiveness in spontaneously breathing patients: a systematic review of literature.

Patients who increase stoke volume or cardiac index more than 10 or 15% after a fluid challenge are usually considered fluid responders. Assessment of fluid responsiveness prior to volume expansion is critical to avoid fluid overload, which has been associated with poor outcomes. Maneuvers to assess fluid responsiveness are well established in mechanically ventilated patients; however, few studies evaluated maneuvers to predict fluid responsiveness in spontaneously breathing patients.

Effectiveness of Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungal Isolates from the Land Uses of Amazon Region in Symbiosis with Cowpea.

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi provide several ecosystem services, including increase in plant growth and nutrition. The occurrence, richness, and structure of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi communities are influenced by human activities, which may affect the functional benefits of these components of the soil biota. In this study, 13 arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi isolates originating from soils with different land uses in the Alto Solimões-Amazon region were evaluated regarding their effect on growth, nutrition, and cowpea yield in controlled conditions using two soils.

Gender differences of cannabis smoking on serum leptin levels: population-based study.

Objective: To evaluate the serum leptin levels in cannabis smokers.

Methods: This was a cross-sectional population-based study of participants between the ages of 18 and 35 years. The data were collected through a self-administered questionnaire covering sociodemographic data and the use of psychoactive substances.

Background: Few studies have assessed the effectiveness of the Protected Area networks on the conservation status of target species. Here, we assess the effectiveness of the Portuguese Natura 2000 (the European Union network of protected areas) in maintaining a species included in the Annex I of the Bird Directive, namely the population of a priority farmland bird, the little bustard .

Methods: We measured the effectiveness of the Natura 2000 by comparing population trends across time (2003-2006 and 2016) in 51 areas, 21 of which within 12 Special Protection Areas (SPA) that were mostly designated for farmland bird conservation and another 30 areas without EU protection.
