Pest management under climate change: The importance of understanding tritrophic relations.

Plants and insects depend on climatic factors (temperature, solar radiation, precipitations, relative humidity and CO) for their development. Current knowledge suggests that climate change can alter plants and insects development and affect their interactions. Shifts in tritrophic relations are of particular concern for Integrated Pest Management (IPM), because responses at the highest trophic level (natural enemies) are highly sensitive to warmer temperature.

Establishment and validation of a score to predict ovarian response to stimulation in IVF.

This study aimed to integrate clinical and biological parameters in a score able to predict ovarian response to stimulation for IVF in gonadotrophin-releasing hormone (GnRH) antagonist protocols. A progressive discriminant analysis to establish a score including the main clinical and biological parameters predicting ovarian response was performed by retrospectively analysing data from the first ovarian stimulation cycle of 494 patients. The score was validated in a prospectively enrolled, independent set of 257 patients undergoing their first ovarian stimulation cycle.

In Situ Stimulation of Thiocyanate Biodegradation through Phosphate Amendment in Gold Mine Tailings Water.

Thiocyanate (SCN) is a contaminant requiring remediation in gold mine tailings and wastewaters globally. Seepage of SCN-contaminated waters into aquifers can occur from unlined or structurally compromised mine tailings storage facilities. A wide variety of microorganisms are known to be capable of biodegrading SCN; however, little is known regarding the potential of native microbes for in situ SCN biodegradation, a remediation option that is less costly than engineered approaches.

Lactobacillus acidophilus versus placebo in the symptomatic treatment of irritable bowel syndrome: the LAPIBSS randomized trial.

Unlabelled: Irritable bowel syndrome is a chronic functional gastrointestinal disorder characterized by abdominal pain/discomfort and altered bowel habits. The use of Lactobacilli as probiotics during irritable bowel syndrome is based on their interesting mechanisms of action and their excellent safety profile but little is known about their clinical efficacy due to the lack of adequately designed clinical trials. The current clinical trial protocol aims to determine the effects of a mixture of Lactobacillus acidophilus NCFM and LAFTI L10 as probiotics to improve irritable bowel syndrome symptoms (LAPIBSS).

Bone marrow basophils provide survival signals to immature B cells in vitro but are dispensable in vivo.

Immature B cells are the first B cell progenitors to express a fully formed B cell receptor and are therefore subject to extensive selection processes that act to mitigate the emergence of autoreactive clones. While it is well appreciated that most B cell generation in the bone marrow is highly dependent on access to molecules present in the local milieu, the existence of extrinsically provided factors that modulate immature B cell biology is ambiguous. Nonetheless, a population of CD49b+CD90lo cells has demonstrated in vitro potential to promote immature B cell survival.

[Pregnancy and delivery in patients with a personal history of cesarean section in Dakar: epidemiological, clinical, therapeutic and prognostic aspects].

The aim of our study was to determine hospitalization rate for vaginal birth after cesarean section in Pikine, to evaluate the quality of the management of pregnant women with previous cesarean section and to determine prognostic factors of the outcome of a trial of scar. We conducted a retrospective study based on medical records and operational protocols of patients who underwent vaginal birth after cesarean section over the period 1 January 2010 - 31 December 2011. We analyzed socio-demographic data, pregnancy follow-up, therapeutic modalities and prognosis.

No evidence of an immune adjustment in response to a parasitoid threat in Lobesia botrana larvae.

Immune function is a key determinant of an organism's fitness, and natural insect populations are highly variable for this trait, mainly due to environmental heterogeneity and pathogen diversity. We previously reported a positive correlation between infection prevalence by parasitoids and host immunity in natural populations of the vineyard pest Lobesia botrana. Here, we tested whether this correlation reflects a plastic adjustment of host immunity in response to the local presence of parasites.

In many such cases, it has proved difficult to identify a genetic cause. We sought the genetic cause of cardiac, vertebral, and renal defects, among others, in unrelated patients.

Synthesis and Characterization of PEGylated and Fluorinated Chitosans: Application to the Synthesis of Targeted Nanoparticles for Drug Delivery.

To synthesize chitosan nanoparticles (CS NPs), ionic gelation is a very attractive method. It relies on the spontaneous supramolecular assembly of cationic CS with anionic compounds, which leads to nanohydrogels. To extend ionic gelation to functionalized CS, the assessment of CS degree of substitution (DS) is a key step.

Does air pollution play a role in infertility?: a systematic review.

Background: Air pollution is involved in many pathologies. These pollutants act through several mechanisms that can affect numerous physiological functions, including reproduction: as endocrine disruptors or reactive oxygen species inducers, and through the formation of DNA adducts and/or epigenetic modifications. We conducted a systematic review of the published literature on the impact of air pollution on reproductive function.

Effects of food abundance and early clutch predation on reproductive timing in a high Arctic shorebird exposed to advancements in arthropod abundance.

Climate change may influence the phenology of organisms unequally across trophic levels and thus lead to phenological mismatches between predators and prey. In cases where prey availability peaks before reproducing predators reach maximal prey demand, any negative fitness consequences would selectively favor resynchronization by earlier starts of the reproductive activities of the predators. Sperm morphology: assessment, pathophysiology, clinical relevance, and state of the art in 2017.

For over 30 years, sperm morphology assessment has been one of the most common tests in evaluation of fertility. This review examines the clinical relevance of sperm morphology assessment in the diagnosis of infertility and in assisted reproductive technology, as well as its analytical reliability. Publications on the pathophysiology, the analytical reliability of the test and its clinical relevance in diagnosis and in Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) were evaluated.

Effect of unilateral tubal abnormalities on the results of intrauterine inseminations.

A total of 101 patients with one normal tube were compared with 117 patients with two normal tubes to assess the effect of unilateral tubal abnormalities on the results of intrauterine inseminations. The clinical pregnancy and live birth rates seemed to reduce by one-half in almost all types of abnormality, suggesting that these patients should be preferentially treated with IVF.

Simulation training for emergency obstetric and neonatal care in Senegal preliminary results.

To describe a new training approach for emergency obstetric and neonatal care (EmONC) introduced in Senegal to strengthen the skills of healthcare providers. The approach was based on skills training according to the so-called "humanist" method and on "lifesaving skills". Simulated practice took place in the classroom through 13 clinical stations summarizing the clinical skills needed for EmONC.

[Evaluation of the French practices in brachytherapy using surveys].

Introduction: Prostate cancer brachytherapy can be used as an alternative to the radical prostatectomy and radiotherapy. In the low-risk group, specific survivals are up to 95% after 10years. The aim of the study is to describe the practices in brachytherapy in France.

Effect of pyridostigmine on in vivo and in vitro respiratory muscle of mdx mice.

The current work was conducted to verify the contribution of neuromuscular transmission defects at the neuromuscular junction to Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy disease progression and respiratory dysfunction. We tested pyridostigmine and pyridostigmine encapsulated in liposomes (liposomal PYR), an acetylcholinesterase inhibitor to improve muscular contraction on respiratory muscle function in mdx mice at different ages. We evaluated in vivo with the whole-body plethysmography, the ventilatory response to hypercapnia, and measured in vitro diaphragm strength in each group.

One-year effectiveness and safety of vedolizumab therapy for inflammatory bowel disease: a prospective multicentre cohort study.

Background: We recently showed that vedolizumab is effective in patients with Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC) with prior anti-TNF failure in a multicentre compassionate early-access programme before marketing authorisation was granted to vedolizumab.

Aims: To assess effectiveness and safety of vedolizumab at week 54 in patients UC and CD.

Methods: Between June and December 2014, 173 patients with Crohn's disease (CD) and 121 with ulcerative colitis (UC) were treated with vedolizumab induction therapy.

Raman spectroscopy as a tool for ecology and evolution.

Scientists are always on the lookout for new modalities of information which could reveal new biological features that are useful for deciphering the complexity of biological systems. Here, we introduce Raman spectroscopy as a prime candidate for ecology and evolution. To encourage the integration of this microscopy technique in the field of ecology and evolution, it is crucial to discuss first how Raman spectroscopy fits within the conceptual, technical and pragmatic considerations of ecology and evolution.

Diazonium Salt-Based Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy Nanosensor: Detection and Quantitation of Aromatic Hydrocarbons in Water Samples.

Here, we present a surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) nanosensor for environmental pollutants detection. This study was conducted on three polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs): benzo[a]pyrene (BaP), fluoranthene (FL), and naphthalene (NAP). SERS substrates were chemically functionalized using 4-dodecyl benzenediazonium-tetrafluoroborate and SERS analyses were conducted to detect the pollutants alone and in mixtures.

Characterization of an autotrophic bioreactor microbial consortium degrading thiocyanate.

Thiocyanate (SCN) forms as a by-product of cyanidation during gold ore processing and can be degraded by a variety of microorganisms utilizing it as an energy, nitrogen, sulphur and/or carbon source. In complex consortia inhabiting bioreactor systems, a range of metabolisms are sustained by SCN degradation; however, despite the addition or presence of labile carbon sources in most bioreactor designs to date, autotrophic bacteria have been found to dominate key metabolic functions. In this study, we cultured an autotrophic SCN-degrading consortium directly from gold mine tailings.

Follicular growth but absence of oocyte and cumulus maturation during ovarian stimulation in the days following surgical abortion: a case report.

This paper is a case report on the results of an ovarian stimulation performed in the days following an induced abortion. A patient had breast cancer diagnosed during an early pregnancy. She had an induced abortion and had, before chemotherapy an ovarian stimulation, using rFSH and GnRH antagonist, followed by follicular puncture for oocyte for vitrification in the view of fertility preservation.

Personality, immune response and reproductive success: an appraisal of the pace-of-life syndrome hypothesis.

The pace-of-life syndrome (POLS) hypothesis is an extended concept of the life-history theory that includes behavioural traits. The studies challenging the POLS hypothesis often focus on the relationships between a single personality trait and a physiological and/or life-history trait. While pathogens represent a major selective pressure, few studies have been interested in testing relationships between behavioural syndrome, and several fitness components including immunity.

Environmental pollutants, a possible etiology for premature ovarian insufficiency: a narrative review of animal and human data.

Background: Because only 25% of cases of premature ovarian insufficiency (POI) have a known etiology, the aim of this review was to summarize the associations and mechanisms of the impact of the environment on this pathology. Eligible studies were selected from an electronic literature search from the PUBMED database from January 2000 to February 2016 and associated references in published studies. Search terms included ovary, follicle, oocyte, endocrine disruptor, environmental exposure, occupational exposure, environmental contaminant, pesticide, polyaromatic hydrocarbon, polychlorinated biphenyl PCB, phenol, bisphenol, flame retardant, phthalate, dioxin, phytoestrogen, tobacco, smoke, cigarette, cosmetic, xenobiotic.

Bis-Azide Low-Band Gap Cross-Linkable Molecule N-[CPDT(FBTTh)] to Fully Thermally Stabilize Organic Solar Cells Based on P3HT:PCBM.

We synthesized a novel bis-azide low-band gap cross-linkable molecule N-[CPDT(FBTTh)] with wide absorption. This compound is of interest as an additive in polymer/fullerene bulk heterojunction solar cells. In addition to providing efficient thermal stabilization of the morphology, the additive can harvest additional solar light compared with pristine poly(3-hexyl thiophene) to improve the power-conversion efficiency (PCE).
