Purpose: Men with high-risk prostate cancer (PCa) are treated with androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) and radiation therapy, but the disease reoccurs in 30% of patients. Biochemical recurrence of PCa after treatment is influenced by tumor hypoxia. Tumors with high levels of hypoxia are aggressive, resistant to treatment, and have increased metastatic capacity.

Methods: Renal calculi extruded in a series of 8 patients with nephrocalcinosis were analysed using Fourier transmission infrared spectrometry. In 4 patients, next-generation sequencing using a nephrocalcinosis-nephrolithiasis panel was performed to determine the nature of the underlying disease.
Purpose: Tumor hypoxia is an adverse prognostic factor in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). We assessed whether patients with hypoxic HNSCC benefited from the addition of nimorazole to definitive intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT).
Methods And Materials: NIMRAD was a phase 3, multicenter, placebo-controlled, double-anonymized trial of patients with HNSCC unsuitable for concurrent platinum chemotherapy or cetuximab with definitive IMRT (NCT01950689).
Calciphylaxis is a rare, yet underdiagnosed condition causing high mortality in patients with severe renal and cardiovascular disease. Since knowledge of the pathophysiology of calciphylaxis is limited, a differential analysis of histological alterations in patient subgroups with various comorbidities might expose different disease phenotypes and allow deeper insights into the pathophysiology of the condition. Histological markers of osteogenesis and calcification were investigated in a group of 18 patients with clinically and histologically verified calciphylaxis, using immunohistochemical staining.

A previous study by our group derived a 24‑gene signature to assess hypoxia in bladder cancer. The objectives of the present study were to compare platforms for generating signature scores, identify cut‑off values for prospective studies, assess intra‑tumour heterogeneity and confirm hypoxia relevance.

There is potential for drug radiotherapy combinations to improve the therapeutic ratio. We aimed to investigate whether hypoxia-associated genes could be used to identify FDA approved drugs for repurposing for the treatment of hypoxic prostate cancer.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFLong non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) are involved in diverse biological processes, including DNA damage repair, and are of interest as potential biomarkers of radiosensitivity. We investigated whether lncRNA radiosensitivity signatures could be derived for use in cancer patients treated with radiotherapy. Signature development involved radiosensitivity measurements for cell lines and primary tumor samples, and patient outcome after radiotherapy.

We investigated the occurrence of zoonotic enteric bacteria in seabirds across the Antarctic and subantarctic region; for comparison purposes, in addition to seabirds, poultry in a subantarctic island was also sampled. Three findings suggest reverse zoonosis from humans to seabirds: the detection of a zoonotic Salmonella serovar (ser.

We report a patient with primary progressive multiple sclerosis (MS) who presented with generalized weakness caused by hypercalcemia after uncontrolled intake of more than 50,000 IU of cholecalciferol per day over several months. Various treatment strategies were required to achieve normocalcemia.

There is little information about reservoirs of these zoonotic agents in Africa. Thus, chicks of kelp gulls (Larus dominicanus, n = 129) and greater crested terns (Thalasseus bergii, n = 100) were studied at five colonies on the Western Cape coast (South Africa) during summer 2013/2014.

Studies on the pathophysiology of mineral compositions and effective treatment modalities are limited. We therefore studied 14 patients with subcutaneous calcifications.

Methods: We interviewed a nationally representative panel of youth ages 14-24 years (N = 719) twice 1 year apart to determine time spent with television, the Internet, videogames, and book reading, as well as the purpose of those uses. A cluster analysis identified major combinations of media use.
Adults with obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome typically have a history of obesity, snoring, and prominent daytime somnolence. However, children with this condition are more likely to have normal body weight, adenoid and tonsillar hypertrophy, and inattentiveness during school classes. The symptoms of children with sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome can be divided into those of sleep-disordered breathing -such as snoring-, symptoms of sleep quality -such as enuresis-, and symptoms of behavior or learning disorders -such as hyperactivity.

We investigated the influence of the R219K and I883M variants in the ABCA1 gene on plasma lipids and carotid intima media thickness and plaque extent in 688 healthy men (40-60 years old). The R219K variant showed no effect on plasma lipids, but carriers of the K allele displayed a lower intima media thickness (P = .

However, the use of formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded specimens for quantitative real-time PCR is not yet a standard diagnostic method in many laboratories, in particular for the quantification of human papillomavirus (HPV). Particularly high-risk HPV types are involved in almost 100% of the carcinogenesis of cervical cancer.

A recently published study described an association between the Arg allele and an increased risk for coronary artery disease. In the present study we asked whether the presence of the codon 972 mutation in the IRS-1 gene is associated with higher IMT values of the carotid arteries.
