Background: Malnutrition in patients with liver cirrhosis (LC) and/or hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) has been associated with adverse outcomes. However, there is little information on the incidence of HCC during the compensated phase of LC in relation to the nutritional status.

Aim: To evaluate the association between the incidence of HCC in compensated LC and their nutritional status.

Introduction: The treatment for Kienböck disease varies widely based on the status of the lunate. To date, there is no consensus regarding the optimal treatment for patients with coronal plane fractures of the lunate, or Lichtman Stage IIIC. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to assess whether coronal plane fractures of the lunate in Kienböck disease healed after surgical intervention, and to determine the outcomes after surgical fixation of the lunate compared with treatment with salvage procedures.

Complex vocal systems are thought to evolve if individuals are regularly challenged by complex social decision-making, the social complexity hypothesis. We tested this idea on a West African forest non-human primate, the Olive colobus monkey, a highly cryptic species with very little social behavior and very small group sizes, factors unlikely to favor the evolution of complex communication. The species also has an unusual fission-fusion social system, with group members regularly spending considerable amounts of time with neighboring groups.

Sex dimorphism in kidney health and disease: mechanistic insights and clinical implication.

Sex is a key variable in the regulation of human physiology and pathology. Many diseases disproportionately affect one sex: autoimmune diseases, such as systemic lupus erythematosus, are more common in women but more severe in men, whereas the incidence of other disorders such as gouty arthritis and malignant cancers is higher in men. Besides the pathophysiology, sex may also influence the efficacy of therapeutics; participants in clinical trials are still predominately men, and the side effects of drugs are more common in women than in men.

A multicenter randomized control trial: Point-of-care syndromic assessment versus standard testing in urgent care center patients with acute respiratory illness.

Objective: Syndromic assessment with multiplex polymerase chain reaction (mPCR) testing in patients with acute respiratory illness (ARI) allows for simultaneous identification of multiple possible infectious etiologies. Point-of-care (POC) syndromic assessment can be conducted in a clinical setting, such as an urgent care center (UCC), without requiring certified laboratories. The primary objective of this study was to determine whether POC syndromic assessment improved patient satisfaction for patients seen at an UCC with ARI; secondary objectives included whether syndromic assessment reduced self-isolation time, increased diagnostic confidence, and reduced overall antibiotic utilization.

Bimekizumab-bkzx for the Treatment of Plaque Psoriasis: A Drug Review.

Background: Bimekizumab is a biologic targeting interleukin (IL)-17A/17F, approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis in 2023.

Data Sources: A PubMed search was performed using the keywords "bimekizumab," "plaque psoriasis," and "bimekizumab clinical trials," from origin to August 1, 2024. We included phase I to III trials of bimekizumab for plaque psoriasis, studies published post-FDA approval, and information from the package insert.

Four surgeons with Level 5 expertise were asked to respond to questions surrounding this debate.

Increased Morbidity and One-Year Post-Discharge Mortality in Patients with Bacteremia Undergoing Emergent Cholecystectomy: An Exploratory Retrospective Observational Study.

Gallbladder disease, one of the most common diseases in the United States, ranges from symptomatic gallstones to severe systemic infections from cholangitis. Little research is available on how often patients undergoing emergent cholecystectomy also have bacteremia. We hypothesized that blood cultures would be performed rarely in patients undergoing emergent cholecystectomy, and that positive cultures would be associated with worse outcomes.

Evaluating the Effectiveness of Commercially Available Antiadhesion Tendon Protector Sheets in Tendon Repair Surgery Versus Tendon Repair Surgery Alone: A Preclinical Model Study.

Distinct cancers harbor mutations in specific subunits, altering the chromatin landscape, such as the PBAF-specific component ARID2 in melanoma. Here, we performed comprehensive epigenomic profiling of SWI/SNF complexes and their associated chromatin states in melanoma and melanocytes and uncovered a subset of PBAF-exclusive regions that coexist with PRC2 and repressive chromatin.

Discovery of VU6007496: Challenges in the Development of an M Positive Allosteric Modulator Backup Candidate.

Herein we report progress toward a backup clinical candidate to the M positive allosteric modulator (PAM) VU319/ACP-319. Scaffold-hopping from the pyrrolo[2,3-]pyridine-based M PAM VU6007477 to isomeric pyrrolo[3,2-]pyridine and thieno[3,2-]pyridine congeners identified several backup contenders. Ultimately, VU6007496, a pyrrolo[3,2-]pyridine, advanced into late stage profiling, only to be plagued with unanticipated, species-specific metabolism and active/toxic metabolites which were identified in our phenotypic seizure liability screen, preventing further development.

Background And Objectives: Binge drinking disparities between sexual and gender minority (SGM) students and their heterosexual, cisgender peers are well-established. Data limitations have precluded understandings of whether the onset and progression of these disparities differ by grade. Additionally, little is known about whether and how SGM-related binge drinking varies across groups of students coincidingly defined by sexual orientation or gender identity (SOGI), race, and ethnicity.

Nonhuman great apes have been claimed to be unable to learn human words due to a lack of the necessary neural circuitry. We recovered original footage of two enculturated chimpanzees uttering the word "mama" and subjected recordings to phonetic analysis. Our analyses demonstrate that chimpanzees are capable of syllabic production, achieving consonant-to-vowel phonetic contrasts via the simultaneous recruitment and coupling of voice, jaw and lips.
