Vulnerable patients in an intensive care unit (ICU) setting are at high risk of infection from bacteria including gut-colonising and species. Complex ICU procedures often depend on successful antimicrobial treatment, underscoring the importance of understanding the extent of patient colonisation by multi-drug-resistant organisms (MDROs) in large UK ICUs. Previous work on ICUs globally uncovered high rates of colonisation by transmission of MDROs, but the situation in UK ICUs is less understood.

Background: California is a leading agricultural state and with that, has significant applications of pesticides. Levels of exposure have been measured to be higher among residents in agricultural areas, but measures of personal inhalation exposure to a wide range of pesticides are lacking. Community members in the San Joaquin Valley have expressed concern over pesticide exposures.

While conducting genomic surveillance of carbapenemase-producing (CPE) from patient colonisation and clinical infections at Birmingham's Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QE), we identified an N-type plasmid lineage, pQEB1, carrying several antibiotic resistance genes, including the carbapenemase gene . The pQEB1 lineage is concerning due to its conferral of multidrug resistance, its host range and apparent transmissibility, and its potential for acquiring further resistance genes. Representatives of pQEB1 were found in three sequence types (STs) of , two STs of , and three species of .

Dietary supplement use is common in older adult drivers: an analysis from the AAA LongROAD study.

Background: Dietary supplement (DS) use is common and increasing among older adults, though much data available on use frequencies are from surveys and performed cross-sectionally. This paper sought to assess the frequency and pattern of dietary supplement use among older adults over time.

Methods: A secondary analysis of data from the AAA LongROAD study, a longitudinal prospective cohort study of older adult drivers, using data from baseline and the first two years of follow up included a total of 2990 drivers aged 65-79 years recruited at five study sites across the US from July 2015 to March 2017.

Context: Psychological concerns, such as athlete burnout and diminished well-being, have become a more recognized problem among collegiate student-athletes due to substantial demands. The purpose of this study was to determine if (1) an association exists between athlete burnout and well-being in female collegiate student-athletes and (2) social support has a main or buffering-effect on well-being and athlete burnout.

Introduction: While it is well recognised that aging is a heterogeneous process, our understanding of the determinants of biological aging and its heterogeneity remains unclear. The San Diego Nathan Shock Center (SD-NSC) Clinical Cohort aims to establish a resource of biospecimens and extensive donor clinical data such as physical, cognitive and sensory function to support other studies that aim to explore the heterogeneity of normal human aging and its biological underpinnings.

Methods And Analysis: The SD-NSC Clinical Cohort is composed of 80 individuals across the adult human lifespan.

One third of people with psychosis become antipsychotic treatment-resistant and the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. We investigated whether altered cognitive control function is a factor underlying development of treatment resistance. We studied 50 people with early psychosis at a baseline visit (mean < 2 years illness duration) and follow-up visit (1 year later), when 35 were categorized at treatment-responsive and 15 as treatment-resistant.

When making choices, individuals differ from one another, as well as from normativity, in how they weigh different types of information. One explanation for this relates to idiosyncratic preferences in what information individuals represent when evaluating choice options. Here, we test this explanation with a simple risky-decision making task, combined with magnetoencephalography (MEG).

Dysregulation of sleep has widespread health consequences and represents an enormous health burden. Short-sleeping individuals are predisposed to the effects of neurodegeneration, suggesting a critical role for sleep in the maintenance of neuronal health. While the effects of sleep on cellular function are not completely understood, growing evidence has identified an association between sleep loss and DNA damage, raising the possibility that sleep facilitates efficient DNA repair.

Differential development of antibiotic resistance and virulence between species.
