Aim: Cytoreductive surgery provides a chance for long-term survival and cure in selected patients with colorectal peritoneal metastases. As clinical and academic interest in this field increases, heterogeneity in outcome reporting hinders the valid and meaningful synthesis of data into high-quality meta-analyses. The aim of this systemic review was to investigate variability in outcome reporting following cytoreductive surgery with or without intraperitoneal chemotherapy for colorectal peritoneal metastases.

This paper compares three automated path-planning algorithms based on publicly available data. The algorithms include a Dijkstra-based algorithm (DBA) that improves on the straightforward application of Dijkstra's algorithm, which restricts the path only to the grid edges. We present a fair and comprehensive comparison method for evaluating multiple algorithms-DBA, the Fast Marching Method (FMM), and a great circle-based method.

Introduction: Intraabdominal collections (IACs) are common following cytoreductive surgery (CRS) with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC). Inflammatory biomarkers and nutritional index (NI) may predict IACs. Management of IACs with image guided percutaneous drainage (IGPD) is an alternative to laparotomy.

How phenotypic diversity originates and persists within populations are classic puzzles in evolutionary biology. While balanced polymorphisms segregate within many species, it remains rare for both the genetic basis and the selective forces to be known, leading to an incomplete understanding of many classes of traits under balancing selection. Here, we uncover the genetic architecture of a balanced sexual mimicry polymorphism and identify behavioral mechanisms that may be involved in its maintenance in the swordtail fish Xiphophorus birchmanni.

This study performed an in-depth investigation into the myeloid cellular landscape in the synovium of patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), "individuals at risk" of RA, and healthy controls (HC). Flow cytometric analysis demonstrated the presence of a CD40-expressing CD206CD163 macrophage population dominating the inflamed RA synovium, associated with disease activity and treatment response. In-depth RNA sequencing and metabolic analysis demonstrated that this macrophage population is transcriptionally distinct, displaying unique inflammatory and tissue-resident gene signatures, has a stable bioenergetic profile, and regulates stromal cell responses.

Article Synopsis
  • The PRECINCT study evaluated how different morphological appearances of peritoneal malignancies on imaging related to pathological findings in a large patient group.
  • It involved the analysis of imaging from 630 patients across seven centers, using 24 morphological terms to describe peritoneal tumors, highlighting high pathological positivity rates for several specific appearances.
  • The study recommends standardizing morphological descriptions in radiology reports to improve diagnostic accuracy and proposes that expert radiologists develop a consensus on terminology for better communication in clinical practice.

The 2022 PSOGI (Peritoneal Surface Oncology Group International) and RENAPE (French Network for Rare Peritoneal Malignancies) consensus on hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) was a comprehensive effort aimed at standardizing treatment protocols for various peritoneal malignancies. This initiative is critical due to the wide range of technical variations in HIPEC procedures and the resulting need for standardization to ensure consistent and effective patient care and meaningful audit of multicenter data.

Background: Individuals with persistent symptoms following a mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) demonstrate improved satisfaction with their performance of self-identified rehabilitation goals after completing a combined occupational therapy and physiotherapy group intervention. However, the relationship between factors associated with developing persistent symptoms following an mTBI and satisfaction with their performance of self-identified goals after completing an intervention are unknown.

Objective(s): To evaluate whether factors associated with developing persistent symptoms influence satisfaction with the performance of self-identified goals after completing a combined occupational therapy and physiotherapy group intervention.

Background And Aim: In this report from Phase 1 of the prospective, observational, PRECINCT (Pattern of peritoneal dissemination and REsponse to systemic Chemotherapy IN Common and uncommon peritoneal Tumours) study, a correlation was performed between the radiological PCI (peritoneal cancer index; rPCI) and surgical PCI (sPCI). The impact of timing of peritoneal malignancy (PM) and previous abdominal surgery was also studied.

Methods: The rPCI and sPCI were considered the 'same' if they differed by ≤ 3 points.

Article Synopsis
  • Acute hypoxaemic respiratory failure (AHRF) is a significant cause for ICU admissions, comprising over 52% of patients, with differing mortality rates based on severity.
  • A study from 2005 to 2022 revealed that the survival rate has improved overall in ICUs, with in-hospital mortality decreasing from 13.3% to 8.2%, even amidst the high risks associated with severe AHRF.
  • Researchers emphasize the need for better identification of AHRF patients to manage and reduce the risk of deterioration effectively, as the healthcare impact of AHRF may be larger than previously understood.

Article Synopsis
  • The PRECINCT study is a multicenter analysis of surgical documentation and disease incidence in patients with peritoneal tumors, focusing on the surgical peritoneal cancer index (sPCI) and its variations across centers.
  • Among 707 enrolled patients from September 2020 to December 2021, the study found that different morphological terminologies were used to describe peritoneal lesions, with the most common being "normal peritoneum," "tumor nodules," and "confluent disease."
  • The research revealed that the incidence of pathologically confirmed disease was higher in cases with more severe lesion scores and suggested that using frozen section analysis could be beneficial, indicating the need for larger studies correlating imaging and pathology.

Aim: The clinical burden of pelvic exenteration (PE) for locally advanced rectal cancer (LARC) is nationally under-reported. The widespread use of pelvic MRI since 2005 has increased the accuracy of local staging and awareness of the need for 'beyond TME (total mesorectal excision)' surgery. The aim of this study was to assess the volume of patients undergoing PE within England, which factors affected survival outcomes and whether the use of MRI has influenced these outcomes.

Agricultural systems tend to be characterised by large diversity, therefore, solving socio-economic and environmental problems in agriculture requires targeted and contextualised policies. However, policies often fail to recognize this heterogeneity in their design or implementation. This can result in the use of sector-wide characteristics and, consequently, generic policies that are not tailored to specific farming systems.
