Stability of ACE inhibitory ham peptides against heat treatment and in vitro digestion.

Angiotensin I-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitory peptides derived from Spanish dry-cured ham have been examined for their stability during processing and after in vitro digestion. Results indicate that peptides preserved almost the same ACE inhibitory activity before and after applying diverse heating (from 50 to 117°C), times of processing (from 3 to 60min) and simulated in vitro digestion with gastrointestinal proteases. Peptides KAAAAP, AAPLAP, KPVAAP, IAGRP, and KAAAATP were the most potent peptides with IC50 values ranging from 12.

Role of testis sparing surgery in the conservative management of small testicular masses: oncological and functional perspectives.

Introduction: Radical orchiectomy (RO) is still considered the standard of care for malignant germ cell tumours, which represent the vast majority of the palpable testicular masses. In those patients diagnosed with small testicular masses (STMs), testis-sparing surgery (TSS) could be an alternative treatment to RO. The aim of this updated review is to evaluate the current indications for TSS, and discuss the oncological and functional results of patients who had undergone organ-sparing surgery for STMs.

Herbivory makes major contributions to ecosystem carbon and nutrient cycling in tropical forests.

The functional role of herbivores in tropical rainforests remains poorly understood. We quantified the magnitude of, and underlying controls on, carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus cycled by invertebrate herbivory along a 2800 m elevational gradient in the tropical Andes spanning 12°C mean annual temperature. We find, firstly, that leaf area loss is greater at warmer sites with lower foliar phosphorus, and secondly, that the estimated herbivore-mediated flux of foliar nitrogen and phosphorus from plants to soil via leaf area loss is similar to, or greater than, other major sources of these nutrients in tropical forests.

Small renal masses initially managed using active surveillance: results from a retrospective study with long-term follow-up.

Background: The purpose of this study was to provide outcomes of patients managed using active surveillance (AS) for small renal masses (SRMs).

Patients And Methods: We retrospectively reviewed data of 62 patients diagnosed with 64 contrast enhancing SRMs suspicious for renal cell carcinoma. We evaluated the differences between patients who remained on AS and those who underwent delayed surgical intervention.

Subchromoplast sequestration of carotenoids affects regulatory mechanisms in tomato lines expressing different carotenoid gene combinations.

Metabolic engineering of the carotenoid pathway in recent years has successfully enhanced the carotenoid contents of crop plants. It is now clear that only increasing biosynthesis is restrictive, as mechanisms to sequestrate these increased levels in the cell or organelle should be exploited. In this study, biosynthetic pathway genes were overexpressed in tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) lines and the effects on carotenoid formation and sequestration revealed.

Supported protein G on gold electrode: characterization and immunosensor application.

In this work, we study the electrochemical properties of protein layer grafted on gold electrode for C-reactive protein detection. Two CRP-antibody immobilization methods were used: the first method is based on direct physisorption of CRP-antibody onto the gold surface and the second method is based on oriented CRP-antibody with protein G intermediate layer. The two developed immunosensors were tested against CRP antigen in phosphate buffer saline solution and in human plasma.

Beyond the impasse? Systemic consultation and understanding complex cases.

Background: Systemic consultation provides an opportunity for clinicians working with complex cases and behaviours of concern to reflect on interpersonal dynamics that may be inhibiting change. This approach to case review is drawn from systemic family therapy, a model that is gaining some acceptance within the field of intellectual disability.

Method: Thematic analysis was used to explore the experience of eleven clinicians attending systemic consultation.

A century of bovine besnoitiosis: an unknown disease re-emerging in Europe.

Bovine besnoitiosis, which is caused by the cyst-forming apicomplexan parasite Besnoitia besnoiti, is a chronic and debilitating vector-borne disease characterized by both cutaneous and systemic manifestations. In Europe, this parasitic disease appeared in a few restricted areas in France and Portugal since the first recorded cases in the beginning of the 20th century. However, at present, the disease is considered to be re-emerging by the European Food Safety Authority due to an increased number of cases and the geographic expansion of besnoitiosis into cattle herds in several European countries.

Religious fundamentalism and religious orientation among the Greek Orthodox.

The experimenters explored how religious fundamentalism related with religious orientation, irrational thinking, and immature defense mechanisms. They also explored the possible moderational role of the Big 5 personality factors. The participants were predominantly Greek Orthodox College students from a Cypriot University.

Modelling the effects of climate change on the distribution and production of marine fishes: accounting for trophic interactions in a dynamic bioclimate envelope model.

Climate change has already altered the distribution of marine fishes. Future predictions of fish distributions and catches based on bioclimate envelope models are available, but to date they have not considered interspecific interactions. We address this by combining the species-based Dynamic Bioclimate Envelope Model (DBEM) with a size-based trophic model.

Development and optimisation of a label-free quantitative proteomic procedure and its application in the assessment of genetically modified tomato fruit.

A key global challenge for plant biotechnology is addressing food security, whereby provision must be made to feed 9 billion people with nutritional feedstuffs by 2050. To achieve this step change in agricultural production new crop varieties are required that are tolerant to environmental stresses imposed by climate change, have better yields, are more nutritious and require less resource input. Genetic modification (GM) and marker-assisted screening will need to be fully utilised to deliver these new crop varieties.

A five year prospective investigation of anterior pituitary function after traumatic brain injury: is hypopituitarism long-term after head trauma associated with autoimmunity?

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) has been recently recognized as a common cause of pituitary dysfunction. However, there are not sufficient numbers of prospective studies to understand the natural history of TBI induced hypopituitarism. The aim was to report the results of five years' prospective follow-up of anterior pituitary function in patients with mild, moderate and severe TBI.

Identification of novel antioxidant peptides generated in Spanish dry-cured ham.

The objective of this study was to purify and identify antioxidant peptides present in a water soluble extract of Spanish dry-cured ham. The initial extract was loaded into a Sephadex G25 column and fractions showing antioxidant activity were collected, pooled together and subjected to reversed-phase chromatography for further purification. Using a nano-LC-MS/MS analysis, 27 peptides were identified in these fractions.

Measurement of Z boson production in Pb-Pb collisions at sqrt[s(NN)]=2.76 TeV with the ATLAS detector.

The ATLAS experiment has observed 1995 Z boson candidates in data corresponding to 0.15  nb(-1) of integrated luminosity obtained in the 2011 LHC Pb+Pb run at sqrt[s(NN)]=2.76  TeV.

Search for dark matter candidates and large extra dimensions in events with a photon and missing transverse momentum in pp collision data at sqrt[s]=7 TeV with the ATLAS detector.

Results of a search for new phenomena in events with an energetic photon and large missing transverse momentum in proton-proton collisions at sqrt[s] = 7 TeV are reported. Data collected by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.6 fb(-1) are used.

Search for magnetic monopoles in sqrt[s]=7 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector.

This Letter presents a search for magnetic monopoles with the ATLAS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider using an integrated luminosity of 2.0  fb(-1) of pp collisions recorded at a center-of-mass energy of sqrt[s]=7  TeV. No event is found in the signal region, leading to an upper limit on the production cross section at 95% confidence level of 1.
