Congenital epulides, rare benign gum tumours which present at birth, pose challenges for neonatal anaesthesia due to potential airway obstruction and surgical requirements. This case report discusses successful anaesthesia for a newborn with these tumours. An oversized facemask enabled an adequate seal, and videolaryngoscopy provided good airway visualisation for orotracheal intubation.

Purpose: To determine whether medical school curricular change impacted the assessment of graduates in their first year of postgraduate training.

Methods: The authors examined for differences in the survey of postgraduate year one (PGY-1) program directors for Uniformed Services University (USU) medical school graduates from the Classes of 2011 and 2012 (pre-curriculum reform, pre-CR), Classes of 2015, 2016, and 2017 (curriculum transition), and Classes of 2017, 2018, and 2019 (post-curriculum reform, post-CR). Multivariate analysis of variance was used to explore for differences among the cohorts in the 5 previously identified factors on the PGY-1 survey (Medical Expertise; Professionalism; Military Unique Practice, Deployments and Humanitarian Missions; System-Based Practice and Practiced-Based Learning; Communication and Interpersonal Skills).

Spreader grafts traditionally are used to improve airflow through opening the internal nasal valve, as well as enhance the cosmetic appearance of the nose. The graft's versatility proves useful in surgical correction of several nasal profiles by enhancing dorsal aesthetic lines and by maintenance of the nasal pyramid at midline. Kinesin-binding protein (KBP) is an important selective inhibitor of specific kinesin family members and its genetic disruption causes Goldberg-Shprintzen syndrome. Cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) has recently been used to reveal the structure of KBP alone (72 kDa) and in complex with the motor domain of the mitotic kinesin-12 KIF15 (110 kDa). KBP is an α-solenoid, tetratricopeptide-repeat protein that interacts with the microtubule-binding region of the kinesin motor domain and blocks microtubule attachment.
