This study investigated the predictors of participation in a school-based, anti-tobacco activism program. Subjects in this study consisted of 7th grade students participating in the intervention component of Project S.H.

Teacher attitudes toward smoking policies were found to be strongly related to the current smoking behavior of the teacher but not consistently related to student smoking. In addition, teacher likelihood of intervening showed a modest association with teacher smoking status, with current smokers generally indicating being the least likely to intervene for student possession or use of cigarettes.

The Latino respondents were dichotomized into a low (L-Latino) or high (H-Latino) acculturation group according to a median split of an acculturation index.

In acidic pH regions, the swelling equilibria were found to be stable over 200 d. In alkaline pH environments, however, the 'equilibrium' swelling increases slowly with time.

This study evaluated a peer-led AIDS intervention program with university students (1) increase knowledge of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) transmission and infection; (2) change attitudes to reflect scientific information on AIDS-related facts; and (3) change behavioral intentions to correspond with safer sexual practices. Subjects were students (N = 142) from four undergraduate classes and were predominantly female (65%), white (82%), and sexually active (86%).

World War Two-era Finnish combat veterans were compared to Finnish veterans who were non-combatants. Both groups were followed from 1959 to 1984.

Because program outcome may be related to the characteristics of a health facilitator, this study investigated the association between the characteristics of 29 college undergraduate health facilitators of an adolescent tobacco use prevention program with their scores on manageability and inclass performance scales. Results indicated health facilitators who rated themselves as outgoing, adventurous, analytical, and were older rated higher on the inclass performance scale.

The present study employed a modified analogue skills test. Modifications included adding a separate subscale for smokeless tobacco, emphasizing repeated offers and group pressure, and rating the quality of responses (good, fair, poor).

Three expert judges classified an initial pool of items as to whether they represented "precontemplation," "contemplation," "action," or "maintenance" stages of smokeless tobacco acquisition. Fifty items with adequate inter-rater reliability were combined with 21 previously developed items pertaining to cigarette smoking acquisition in an overall tobacco acquisition questionnaire, which in turn was administered to 358 junior and senior high public school students.

The FFS physicians were more likely to consider behavioral risk factors important than were HMO physicians, and they were more likely to ask their patients about behavioral risk factors. Fee-for-service physicians were more likely than HMO physicians to use continuing medical education courses to upgrade their skills in modifying behavioral risk factors.

The association between maternal tobacco smoke exposure and hazards to reproduction has been investigated since the turn of the century. Numerous studies have demonstrated an increased risk to the developing fetus as a result of maternal smoking. This risk continues to manifest itself postnatally into childhood.

Significant differences in generic tobacco use between ethnic groups were found in the 4th, 10th and 12th grades, but were greatest in the 10th grade. Only white youths demonstrated a sharp increase in regular tobacco use (once a month or more) between 7th and 10th grade.

College undergraduate health facilitators delivered a tobacco prevention intervention to sixth and seventh grade students in six schools. Outside observers evaluated facilitators in seven categories: being prepared, maintaining class control, keeping students' attention, encouraging participation, communication, relating to students, and working well in a team.

Determinations of blood levels of human calcitonin by radioimmunoassay have varied considerably in different laboratories. Much of the controversy over calcitonin levels can be attributed to the multiplicity of immunoreactive forms of the hormone (iCT), the differing region specificities of the antisera utilized for measurement by radioimmunoassay, protein effects, different rates of degradation of the various iCT fractions and the specific methodology of the radioimmunoassay.
