Introduction: Oral non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are effective in managing musculoskeletal pain, but often are associated with side effects. Therefore, topical anti-inflammatory drugs are considered a suitable alternative for certain patients.

Objective: To determine the skin penetration capacity and anti-inflammatory efficacy of a methyl salicylate gel (MS) with turpentine essence, camphor and menthol (GelSMETAM).

This dataset, gathered during the RETRO-BMC cruise, reports multiple-scale measurements at the Confluence of the Brazil and Malvinas Currents. The cruise was carried out between 8 and 28 April 2017 onboard R/V Hespérides, departing from Ushuaia and arriving to Santos. Along its track, the vessel recorded near-surface temperature and salinity, as well as the horizontal flow from 20 m down to about 800 m.

Introduction: Few prospective studies analyze, with sufficient duration, the impact of an antimicrobial stewardship program (AMSP) carried out entirely in a hospital.

Methods: Descriptive study evaluating the consumption of antimicrobials expressed in defined daily doses (DDD) per 100 hospital occupied bed-days (OBDs) stratified in medical, surgical and intensive care unit (ICU) and the incidence of densities (ID) per 1,000 hospital OBDs of the prevalent multidrug-resistant organisms (MDRO) in a tertiary hospital, over a period of 5 years before and after the implementation of an AMSP. Analysis of direct costs and those associated with hospital stay and mortality.

This oceanographic dataset was gathered during the TIC-MOC cruise, which was designed to characterize the dynamics of the Brazil-Malvinas Confluence. The cruise was carried on board the R/V Hespérides, with departure from Ushuaia and arrival to Salvador de Bahía. A total of 66 conductivity-temperature-depth (CTD) stations were completed between 8 and 22 March 2015, offshore from the continental platform and within 45°S-35°S and 61°W-50°W.

Climate warming affects the development and distribution of sea ice, but at present the evidence of polar ecosystem feedbacks on climate through changes in the atmosphere is sparse. By means of synergistic atmospheric and oceanic measurements in the Southern Ocean near Antarctica, we present evidence that the microbiota of sea ice and sea ice-influenced ocean are a previously unknown significant source of atmospheric organic nitrogen, including low molecular weight alkyl-amines. Given the keystone role of nitrogen compounds in aerosol formation, growth and neutralization, our findings call for greater chemical and source diversity in the modelling efforts linking the marine ecosystem to aerosol-mediated climate effects in the Southern Ocean.

Article Synopsis
  • The study analyzes the distribution of nano- and microphytoplankton from 145 oceanic stations across major oceans, highlighting the dominance of dinoflagellates and coccolithophores in nutrient-poor surface layers while diatoms are more prevalent in nutrient-rich zones.
  • A principal component analysis reveals key trends including differences in community composition between upper and lower euphotic zones and a gradient showing regions rich in phytoplankton versus those that are poor.
  • Additionally, significant variations in dominant phytoplankton taxa are identified among the Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific Oceans, alongside the presence of diatom-dominated communities in certain areas.

A marine symbiosis has been recently discovered between prymnesiophyte species and the unicellular diazotrophic cyanobacterium UCYN-A. At least two different UCYN-A phylotypes exist, the clade UCYN-A1 in symbiosis with an uncultured small prymnesiophyte and the clade UCYN-A2 in symbiosis with the larger Braarudosphaera bigelowii. We targeted the prymnesiophyte-UCYN-A1 symbiosis by double CARD-FISH (catalyzed reporter deposition-fluorescence in situ hybridization) and analyzed its abundance in surface samples from the MALASPINA circumnavigation expedition.

Polyunsaturated aldehydes (PUAs) are organic compounds mainly produced by diatoms, after cell wounding. These compounds are increasingly reported as teratogenic for species of grazers and deleterious for phytoplanktonic species, but there is still scarce information regarding concentration ranges and the composition of PUAs in the open ocean. In this study, we analyzed the spatial distribution and the type of aldehydes produced by the large-sized (>10 μm) phytoplankton in the Atlantic Ocean surface.

Objective: To determine whether the intravesical use of hyaluronic acid (HA) reduces acute and late vesical toxicity induced by radiotherapy.

Methods: Single-centre retrospective study of patients diagnosed with cervical and endometrial cancer treated with brachytherapy (BT) with or without intravesical instillation of HA. Patients were assigned consecutively to the two treatment groups.

Teleost fish in general, and common carp in particular, are excellent genetic models for bridging the gap in knowledge between invertebrate models such as C. elegans and D. melanogaster, on one hand, and higher vertebrates on the other hand, although, until now, there have been few well characterised fish cell lines shown to be suitable for studies on apoptosis.
