Background: Limited English proficiency patients are required under federal law to receive language-concordant care, yet they still receive substandard discharge instructions compared to English-speaking patients. We aimed to summarize the interventions carried out to improve discharge instructions in the limited English proficiency population.

Methods: We conducted a scoping review of academic and gray literature from the United States using Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis Protocols for Scoping Reviews guidelines.

Objectives: Chronic venous disease (CVeD) is a multifactorial and debilitating condition that has a high prevalence in Western countries and an important associated socioeconomic burden. Varicose veins (VVs) are the most common manifestations of CVeD. Pathologically, many morphological and functional changes have been described in VVs, which most notably affect venous wall integrity.

Currently, the lack of (1) a sufficiently integrated, adaptive, and reflective framework to ensure the safety, integrity, and coordinated evolution of a real-time hybrid simulation (RTHS) as it runs, and (2) the ability to articulate and gauge suitable measures of the performance and integrity of an experiment, both as it runs and , have prevented researchers from tackling a wide range of complex research problems of vital national interest. To address these limitations of the current state-of-the-art, we propose a framework named Reflective Framework for Performance Management (REFORM) of real-time hybrid simulation. REFORM will support the execution of more complex RTHS experiments than can be conducted today, and will allow them to be configured rapidly, performed safely, and analyzed thoroughly.

Background & Aims: The antiplatelet effect of low-dose aspirin, via inhibition of cyclooxygenase-1, might contribute to its ability to reduce the risk of colorectal cancer (CRC). Antiplatelet agents with a different mechanism, such as clopidogrel, might have the same effects. We aimed to quantify the effects of low-dose aspirin and clopidogrel on the risk of CRC in a Mediterranean population.

Background: There are some nail abnormalities described in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE).

Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between nail dystrophy (ND) and disease activity, accrued organ damage, capillaroscopic abnormalities, autoantibodies, and some markers of endothelial cell activation in patients with SLE.

Methods: This was a cross-sectional study of SLE patients from a rheumatology clinic in a tertiary care hospital.

Objective: Perceived descriptive drinking norms often differ from actual norms and are positively related to personal consumption. However, it is not clear how normative perceptions vary with specificity of the reference group. Are drinking norms more accurate and more closely related to drinking behavior as reference group specificity increases? Do these relationships vary as a function of participant demographics? The present study examined the relationship between perceived descriptive norms and drinking behavior by ethnicity (Asian or White), sex, and fraternity/sorority status.

The IGF1 gene (insulin-like growth factor 1) is a candidate gene for marker-assisted selection strategies. A single nucleotide polymorphism in the promoter region (IGF1/SnaBI) has been reported to be associated with production traits in several cattle breeds. Here, we report its allelic frequencies in Charolais and Beefmaster breeds; we confirm its association with three growth traits: weaning weight, weaning weight adjusted to 210 days and preweaning weight gain in the Charolais breed.

Objective: Research has found perceived descriptive norms to be one of the strongest predictors of college student drinking, and several intervention approaches have incorporated normative feedback to correct misperceptions of peer drinking behavior. Little research has focused on the role of the reference group in normative perceptions. The current study sought to examine whether normative perceptions vary based on specificity of the reference group and whether perceived norms for more specific reference-group norms are related to individual drinking behavior.

Objective: The current study is a multisite randomized alcohol prevention trial to evaluate the efficacy of both a parenting handbook intervention and the Brief Alcohol Screening and Intervention for College Students (BASICS) intervention, alone and in combination, in reducing alcohol use and consequences among a high-risk population of matriculating college students (i.e., former high school athletes).

Although various treatment approaches are available for alcohol problems, less than 25% of individuals with alcohol use disorders obtain treatment. The purpose of this study is to evaluate interest in attending alternative alcohol treatments, such as meditation and acupuncture, compared to Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). A community sample of 156 adult participants concerned about their drinking were recruited through flyers and newspaper advertisements to complete a Web-based survey assessing identification with mainstream culture, sexual identity, and likelihood to attend alternative alcohol treatments.

Women constitute an increasing proportion of individuals contracting HIV in the United States and, once diagnosed, are living longer lives since the advent of combination antiretroviral therapies. HIV-positive women, who are disproportionately ethnic minority, face unique challenges to their psychosocial adaptation. Findings from a survey of 373 mainly indigent African-American and Puerto Rican women living with HIV/AIDS in the New York City area indicated high levels of depressive symptomatology, which were inversely related to HIV-related social support from friends, relatives, partner, and groups/ organizations.

Background: Little is known about how continuation and maintenance cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) influences important psychological constructs that may be associated with long-term outcome of major depressive disorder. The goal of this study was to examine whether CBT would help maintain attributional style changes experienced by patients during acute phase fluoxetine treatment.

Method: Three hundred and ninety-one patients with major depressive disorder were enrolled in an open, fixed-dose 8 week fluoxetine trial.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examined how treatment-related adverse events (TRAEs) impact the likelihood of patients with depression discontinuing fluoxetine treatment early.
  • A total of 384 patients participated, and their somatic complaints were monitored throughout the 8-week trial to evaluate any TRAEs.
  • Results showed no correlation between the occurrence of TRAEs and either the response to fluoxetine or the decision to prematurely discontinue treatment.

Article Synopsis
  • The study evaluated the efficacy of lithium augmentation in patients with treatment-resistant depression who did not respond to nortriptyline therapy.
  • A total of 92 subjects were enrolled, and after 6 weeks, 35 did not respond to nortriptyline and were randomized to receive either lithium or a placebo for an additional 6 weeks.
  • The results showed no significant difference in response rates between the lithium group (12.5%) and the placebo group (20.0%), suggesting limited effectiveness of lithium for patients with multiple treatment failures.

This article explores administrator and staff perceptions of mission-critical agency capacity in a predominantly Hispanic region that has a high degree of acculturation and elevated use of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs. The domains explored are financial resources, proposal development, agency policies, organizational structure, communication, leadership, planning, and networking capabilities. Although significant differences were found among all eight domains, both staff and administrators concurred regarding the two areas of least capacity--financial resources and proposal development--and the two areas of greatest capacity--planning and networking capabilities.

Background: As a consequence of a growth inhibition of middle third of the face, cleft lip surgery could lead to a pseudoprognathism. However, this is not always the case. Also, when facial architecture is changed, the activity of muscles such as the masseter could be disturbed.

High-dose aspirin therapy for rheumatoid arthritis is frequently associated with severe gastrointestinal injury. To explore the possibility of reversing such damage, we conducted a double-blind, multicenter study with misoprostol, a prostaglandin E1 analog, which has demonstrated mucosal protective, gastric antisecretory, and ulcer healing properties. We also studied possible interference of misoprostol with continuing aspirin treatment in the management of patients with rheumatoid arthritis.

A double-blind parallel multi-centre study of 102 patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) was performed, comparing ibuprofen (1200-2400 mg daily) and ketoprofen (150-300 mg daily) a new non-steroidal, anti-inflammatory agent, over a three month period. Ketoprofen was well tolerated and shown to have comparable efficacy with ibuprofen. Longterm efficacy and tolerance studies are indicated.
