The World Health Organization's International Scheme to Evaluate Household Water Treatment Technologies serves to benchmark microbiological performance of existing and novel technologies and processes for small-scale drinking water treatment according to a tiered system. There is widespread uncertainty around which tiers of performance are most appropriate for technology selection and recommendation in humanitarian response or for routine safe water programming. We used quantitative microbial risk assessment (QMRA) to evaluate attributable reductions in diarrheal disease burden associated with water treatment technologies meeting the three tiers of performance under this Scheme, across a range of conditions.

The arms race between bacteria and their bacteriophages profoundly influences microbial evolution. Temperate phages play important roles in the physiology of their bacterial hosts and establish a lysogenic relationship with the host through which prophage-expressed genes confer new phenotypes. A key phenotype is prophage-mediated defense against heterotypic viral attack, in which temperate phages collude with their bacterial host to prevent other phages from attacking, sometimes with exquisite specificity. Such defense systems have been described in and phages but are likely widespread throughout the microbial community.

Racial and ethnic disparities exist in HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) awareness and care. We evaluated how racial and ethnic disparities in PrEP awareness among MSM presenting to a sexually transmitted disease clinic changed from 2013 to 2016. Among 1243 MSM (68% non-Hispanic White, 22% Hispanic, and 10% non-Hispanic Black), PrEP awareness increased overall, but awareness was lower among Hispanic and non-Hispanic Black MSM relative to non-Hispanic White MSM.

The crystal structure of the F-catalytic domain of the adenosine triphosphate (ATP) synthase has been determined from which hydrolyzes ATP very poorly. The structure of the αβ-component of the catalytic domain is similar to those in active F-ATPases in and However, its ε-subunit differs from those in these two active bacterial F-ATPases as an ATP molecule is not bound to the two α-helices forming its C-terminal domain, probably because they are shorter than those in active enzymes and they lack an amino acid that contributes to the ATP binding site in active enzymes. Storage and stable shipment of genomic DNA are of great concern to laboratories that may need to perform testing off archived samples. There are some dry-state storage methods that are available that have the potential to provide a way to store samples at room temperature for long periods of time as well as offer a means to ship DNA to other facilities without the same safety concerns that come with shipping liquid samples. The recovered DNA should be of sufficient integrity such that downstream applications can be performed without concern of the sample quality.
