Comprehensive scoping review of palliative care development in Africa: recent advances and persistent gaps.

Worldwide 56·8 million people need palliative care (PC), and Africa shows the highest demand. This study updates the 2017 review of African PC development, using a scoping review methodology based on Arksey and O'Malley's framework and the PRISMA-ScR checklist. The review was conducted across PUBMED, CINAHL, Embase, government websites, and the African PC Association Atlas, from 2017 to 2023, charting its progress using the new WHO framework for PC Development, which, in addition to Services, Education, Medicines, and Policies, two new dimensions were incorporated: Research and Empowerment of people and Communities.

Prognostic role of extent of resection and adjuvant radiotherapy in de novo anaplastic meningiomas.

Purpose: Grade 3 meningiomas, although rare, are associated with high morbidity and mortality. The respective impacts of extent of surgical resection and adjuvant radiotherapy are still debated. Moreover, anaplastic meningiomas are studied in heterogenous cohort of de novo and progressive anaplastic tumors.

Evidence generation throughout paediatric medicines life cycle: findings from collaborative work between European Medicines Agency (EMA) and EUnetHTA on use of extrapolation.

Drug development for children presents unique challenges and is highly regulated. Novel approaches, such as the use of extrapolation to address, for example, the need to avoid unethical studies, whilst supporting robust evidence generation have been developed in support of benefit/risk considerations by regulatory authorities. This is only one step in the decision-making process towards access, which in Europe also includes health technology assessment (HTA) bodies.

Context: Palliative care is an essential health service, with over 56.8 million people needing it yearly, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. The World Health Assembly has recognized palliative care as an ethical responsibility and called for comprehensive primary health care.

Exact equilibrium properties of square-well and square-shoulder disks in single-file confinement.

This study investigates the (longitudinal) thermodynamic and structural characteristics of single-file confined square-well and square-shoulder disks by employing a mapping technique that transforms the original system into a one-dimensional polydisperse mixture of nonadditive rods. Leveraging standard statistical-mechanical techniques, exact results are derived for key properties, including the equation of state, internal energy, radial distribution function, and structure factor. The asymptotic behavior of the radial distribution function is explored, revealing structural changes in the spatial correlations.

Exploring anisotropic pressure and spatial correlations in strongly confined hard-disk fluids: Exact results.

This study examines the transverse and longitudinal properties of hard disks confined in narrow channels. Employing an exact mapping of the system onto a one-dimensional polydisperse, nonadditive mixture of hard rods with equal chemical potentials, we compute various thermodynamic properties, including the transverse and longitudinal equations of state, along with their behaviors at both low and high densities. Structural properties are analyzed using the two-body correlation function and the radial distribution function, tailored for the highly anisotropic geometry of this system.

Purpose: This study aims to evaluate the positioning correction extracted from Intra-fraction Cone Beam (IF-CBCT) images obtained during Stereotactic Body Radiotherapy (SBRT) treatments, and to assess whether its magnitude justifies its acquisition. In addition, the results obtained in lung, liver, and pancreas SBRTs with two deep inspiration breath-hold systems (DIBH), and for prostate with/without ultrasound (US) monitoring were compared.

The ATLANTES Global Observatory of Palliative Care (University of Navarra) was created a decade ago to promote a positive attitude towards patients with advanced illness in society and medicine. To do so, and over the past 15 years, ATLANTES has mapped palliative care data worldwide using public health, macro and comparative perspectives in different atlases.

Background: The reliable and efficient estimation of uncertainty in artificial intelligence (AI) models poses an ongoing challenge in many fields such as radiation therapy. AI models are intended to automate manual steps involved in the treatment planning workflow. We focus in this study on dose prediction models that predict an optimal dose trade-off for each new patient for a specific treatment modality.

Allostatic Load/Chronic Stress and Cardiovascular Outcomes in Patients Diagnosed With Breast, Lung, or Colorectal Cancer.

Background: Cardiovascular disease and cancer share a common risk factor: chronic stress/allostatic load (AL). A 1-point increase in AL is linked to up to a 30% higher risk of major cardiac events (MACE) in patients with prostate cancer. However, AL's role in MACE in breast cancer, lung cancer, or colorectal cancer remains unknown.

Dosimetrical and geometrical parameters in single-fraction lattice radiotherapy for the treatment of bulky tumors: Insights from initial clinical experience.

NSABP FB-10: a phase Ib/II trial evaluating ado-trastuzumab emtansine (T-DM1) with neratinib in women with metastatic HER2-positive breast cancer.

Background: We previously reported our phase Ib trial, testing the safety, tolerability, and efficacy of T-DM1 + neratinib in HER2-positive metastatic breast cancer patients. Patients with ERBB2 amplification in ctDNA had deeper and more durable responses. This study extends these observations with in-depth analysis of molecular markers and mechanisms of resistance in additional patients.

Athletic retirement: factors contributing to sleep and mental health problems.

Introduction: The aim of this investigation was to determine which factors were associated with symptoms of sleep and mental health disorders in former athletes.

Methods: Former athletes (N = 173, 50% women) who retired from any competition level within the last 20 years participated in an online survey. The survey consisted of the Athlete Sleep Screening Questionnaire (ASSQ), Personal Wellbeing Index-Adult (PWI-A), Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale-Revised (CESD-R), and Generalised Anxiety Disorder Assessment (GAD-7).

Giredestrant for Estrogen Receptor-Positive, HER2-Negative, Previously Treated Advanced Breast Cancer: Results From the Randomized, Phase II acelERA Breast Cancer Study.

Purpose: To compare giredestrant and physician's choice of endocrine monotherapy (PCET) for estrogen receptor-positive, HER2-negative, advanced breast cancer (BC) in the phase II acelERA BC study (ClinicalTrials.gov identifier: NCT04576455).

Methods: Post-/pre-/perimenopausal women, or men, age 18 years or older with measurable disease/evaluable bone lesions, whose disease progressed after 1-2 lines of systemic therapy (≤1 targeted, ≤1 chemotherapy regimen, prior fulvestrant allowed) were randomly assigned 1:1 to giredestrant (30 mg oral once daily) or fulvestrant/aromatase inhibitor per local guidelines (+luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone agonist in pre-/perimenopausal women, and men) until disease progression/unacceptable toxicity.
