Background: Blood flow restriction caused by peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is reflected in reduced walking capacity. The peripheral mechanisms that may affect the walking capacity of individuals with PAD are not yet fully understood. This study aimed to 1) compare tissue oxygenation and muscle metabolism of individuals with PAD with different walking capacities and 2) evaluate which variables have the greatest potential to explain the variability in distance walked between performance levels.

Nitrite is usual in water of intensive rearing systems. Considering its oxidative harmful potential, it was selected to challenge matrinxa Brycon amazonicus reared in sustained swimming (SS) (with flowing water adjusted to speed at 1.0 BL seg (long-duration aerobic metabolic characteristic) and evaluate any beneficial effect of such rearing system to enhance the fish potential to cope with this oxidant stressor in fish farmings.

Article Synopsis
  • *Methods: The trial involved 59 women, split into a KT group and a control group, who had their muscle blood perfusion measured using near-infrared spectroscopy before and after applying the tape, with statistical analysis to compare results.
  • *Results: While there were no significant differences in blood oxygen levels or deoxygenated hemoglobin between the KT and control groups, the KT group showed a notably larger decrease in certain measurements, suggesting potential clinical relevance despite the lack of statistical significance.

The primary objective of this study was to analyze the moderating effect of body mass index (BMI) on the association between lower body strength, agility, and dynamic balance, considering the mediating influence of lower body flexibility and aerobic endurance in community-dwelling older adults. This study included a sample of 607 community-dwelling older adults (female = 443; male = 164) aged between 60 and 79 years (M = 69.24; SD = 5.

Introduction: A promising approach to optimizing recovery in youth football has been the use of machine learning (ML) models to predict recovery states and prevent mental fatigue. This research investigates the application of ML models in classifying male young football players aged under (U)15, U17, and U19 according to their recovery state. Weekly training load data were systematically monitored across three age groups throughout the initial month of the 2019-2020 competitive season, covering 18 training sessions and 120 observation instances.

Settleable atmospheric particulate matter (SePM), from steelmaking processes, contains a complex mixture of metals, metalloids, and metallic nanoparticles. The SePM is released airborne and disperses in water, representing a significant threat to aquatic life, particularly fish. This study investigated the effects of a sublethal and environmentally relevant concentration of SePM (1 g·L) for 96 h in the gill, liver, kidney, and white muscle of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus), employing exposure and effect biomarkers to test causality between metal accumulation and biochemical responses.

Tropical regions, particularly those with high levels of endemism such as South America, harbor a diverse array of amphibian species. However, these regions often lack specific regulations governing the release of emerging contaminants, including the surfactant nonylphenol ethoxylate (NPE), into water bodies, which can have devastating consequences for these sensitive ecosystems. This study evaluated the sublethal effects of 16-day subchronic exposure to NPE at an environmentally relevant concentration of 30 µg/L on American bullfrog (Lithobates catesbeianus) tadpoles using multiple endpoints, including biometric parameters, antioxidant responses, oxidative stress biomarkers, heart rate, and myocardial contractility.

Article Synopsis
  • The study reviews how passion and motivation influence subjective well-being (SWB) in sports, integrating the Dualistic Model of Passion and Self-Determination Theory.
  • It found that harmonious passion and autonomous motivation enhance SWB, while obsessive passion and controlled motivation have the opposite effect.
  • The authors highlight the need for further research on the relationship between passion, motivation, and well-being in sports, emphasizing the importance of creating supportive conditions for athletes.

Background: This systematic review analysed the association between objectively measured physical activity and sedentary behaviour with cardiovascular risk and HRQoL in adults without previous CVD. Additionally, we analysed the impact of the intensity of the physical activity in this association.

Methods: The search was carried out in three electronic databases with access until February 2023 to find studies with an observational design.

Algae populate multiple habitats, including snow and ice, where they can form red blooms. These decrease snow albedo, accelerating snowmelt and potentially feeding back on snow and glacier decline caused by climate change. Quantifying this feedback requires the understanding of bloom evolution with climate change.

Rationale: positive social interactions are essential for mental health, by offering emotional support, reducing stress levels, and promoting resilience against drugs of abuse effects. However, not all individuals perceive social interaction as rewarding.

Objectives: the goal of this study was to investigate whether the modulation of the orexin system can shift passive coping and non-social behavior (vulnerable) to active coping and social behavior (resilient).

Health literacy is a public health issue. Unpaid caregivers of older people with low health literacy may have difficulties providing care, exerting a negative impact on the care process. The aim of the present study was to perform a systematic review of the literature on factors associated with low health literacy in unpaid caregivers of older people.

This study investigated the effects of two physical exercise programs for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Twenty-one participants were assigned to an indoor group (IG, n = 7; 24-week gym intervention with machine), an outdoor group (OG, n = 7; 24-week outdoor intervention with low-cost materials) or a control group. The outcomes assessed included quality of life, dementia, and functional capacity.

Functional Ankle Instability (FAI) is the subject of extensive research in sports and other environments. Given the importance of accurately measuring this latent construct, it is imperative to carry out a careful assessment of the available tools. In this context, the aim of this review was to take an in-depth look at the six most cited measurement tools to assess FAI, with a specific focus on patient-reported outcome measures related to ankle and foot.

Background: Reports on the association between HTLV-2 infection and the development of diseases in the human host are rare, which has led the scientific community to believe that HTLV-2 is not an important etiological agent of lymphoproliferative or neurodegenerative disorders, which is the case for HTLV-1. In the present study, we demonstrated cases of fibromyalgia in HTLV-1 carriers and, in an unprecedented finding, in two patients with confirmed HTLV-2 infection.

Methods: A total of 957 individuals visited the Virology Laboratory at the Federal University of Pará for screening and confirmation tests for HTLV-1/2 infection.

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly impacted global health, with diverse factors influencing the risk of death among reported cases. This study mainly analyzes the main characteristics that have contributed to the increase or decrease in the risk of death among Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) cases classified as COVID-19 reported in southeast Brazil from 2020 to 2023.

Methods: This cohort study utilized COVID-19 notification data from the Sistema de Vigilância Epidemiológica (SIVEP) information system in the southeast region of Brazil from 2020 to 2023.

Although and may colonize tonsillar tissues, the interaction between them in mixed biofilms has been poorly explored. This study established an interkingdom biofilm model of and and verified the dose-response validation of antimicrobials. Biofilms were formed on microplates, in the presence or absence of a conditioning layer of human saliva, using Brain Heart Infusion (BHI) broth or artificial saliva (AS) as a culture medium, and with variations in the microorganism inoculation sequence.

Institutionalized older adults are characterized by high levels of dependence and low levels of physical activity compared to those living in the community. This combination of factors leads to an increased risk of loss of muscle mass. Sarcopenia can be countered through strength training.
