Purpose: To examine the relationship between axial length and keratometry measurement errors and intraocular lens (IOL) power calculations for pediatric eyes.

Methods: The sensitivity of IOL power calculation to errors in axial length and keratometry measurements was computed as a function of axial length and keratometry for the SRK II, Hoffer Q, Holladay I, SRK/T, and Haigis formulas.

Results: The sensitivity of the IOL power calculation to an axial length measurement error is increased at 4 to 14 D/mm error in axial length in children compared with 3 to 4 D/mm error in axial length in adults.

Eleven million tonnes of waste are produced yearly by the European pulp and paper industry, of which 70% originates from the production of deinked recycled paper. Wastes are very diverse in composition and consist of rejects, different types of sludges and ashes in mills having on-site incineration treatment. The production of pulp and paper from virgin pulp generates less waste but the waste has similar properties to waste from the production of deinked pulp, although with less inorganics.

With improving surgical technique and equipment, the acceptable age for placing an intraocular lens in infants and children is becoming younger. The tools for predicting intraocular lens power have not necessarily kept up, as current theoretical and regression intraocular lens power prediction formulas are largely based on adult eyes at axial lengths, anterior chamber depth, and keratometric values much different than those seen in infants. In addition, the adult eye has matured and is no longer growing, whereas the eyes of infants and children may continue to note changes in axial length, keratometric values, and possibly optical characteristics.

Ontogenic changes in the rat bile acid (BA) pool, measured enzymatically and by GC-MS, and expression of enzymes (5alpha-reductase, 5beta-reductase, and cytochrome P450 enzymes Cyp7a1, Cyp8b1, Cyp27 and Cyp3a11), transporters [bile salt export pump, sodium taurocholate-cotransporting polypeptide, apical sodium-dependent bile acid transporter, and organic solute transporter alpha/beta (Ostalpha/Ostbeta)], and nuclear receptors [fetoprotein transcription factor (Ftf), farnesoid X receptor (Fxr), small heterodimer partner (Shp), and hepatic nuclear factor 4alpha (HNF-4alpha)], determined by quantitative PCR, were investigated. The absolute size of the BA pool increased progressively up to adulthood, whereas the complexity of its composition was high in fetuses, decreased after birth, increased again progressively up to adulthood, and decreased in aged animals. Allo-cholic acid only appeared early in development, in spite of low 5alpha-reductase expression.

Drug targeting may contribute to overcoming resistance to chemotherapy and to reducing side effects. Here, by conjugating a nitrogenated base (NB) to the side chain of a bile acid (BA) moiety, we have synthesized and evaluated six novel compounds, designated BANB-1 to -6, with potential cytostatic activity and vectoriality toward enterohepatic tumors. These compounds were purified by liquid chromatography and their purity was checked by TLC and HPLC before being chemically characterized using IR, (1)H/(13)C NMR and FAB-MS.

Drug targeting might help to overcome resistance to chemotherapy. Here we investigated whether colon cancer and polyps do express functional carriers involved in the uptake of cytostatic bile acid derivatives, in this case Bamet-UD2 [cis-diammine-bisursodeoxycholate-platinum(II)], which has been reported to be taken up by colon cancer cells "in vitro", efficiently induce apoptosis and overcome resistance to cisplatin. Although at lower levels than in ileum, a detectable expression of ASBT, OATP8/1B3, OCT1 and OSTalpha in colon tissue was found, which was not impaired in colon cancer or polyps.

Ethanol is able to cross the placenta, which may cause teratogenicity. Here we investigated whether ethanol consumption during pregnancy (ECDP), even at doses unable to cause malformation, might increase the susceptibility of fetal rat liver to oxidative insults.
