We analyze numerically the Marangoni flow around an immiscible droplet submerged in a stably stratified mixture of ethanol and water. The linear stability analysis shows that the base flow undergoes a supercritical Hopf bifurcation that leads to oscillations. The theoretical prediction for the critical droplet radius is consistent with previous experimental results.

We understand concordance in two different senses: first, as a similar amount of equivalent doses and drug type; second, as a similar treatment for each patient.
Method: This is an analytical, descriptive, retrospective study on psychopharmacological treatment before and after first mental health consultation of 1236 patients.

The main aim of glaucoma treatment is to reduce the intraocular pressure (IOP). One of the most common surgical treatments of glaucoma is the implantation of a glaucoma drainage device to drain the aqueous humor from the anterior chamber to a filtration bleb, where the aqueous humor is absorbed. In some cases, the excess of drainage causes ocular hypotony, which constitutes a sight-threatening complication.

The electrically-driven transport of free ions under such conditions is far from being understood. In this paper, we determine experimentally whether the above-mentioned deviation from isotropy affects the electric charge transport across the liquid.

The polymer solutions and applied voltages are those commonly used in electrospinning and near-field electrospinning. We solve the leaky-dielectric finitely extensible nonlinear elastic-Peterlin (FENE-P) model to describe the dynamical response of the liquid bridge under isothermal conditions.

The free surface minimum radius measured in the experiments is compared with that obtained from a numerical solution of the Navier-Stokes equations for different values of the shear and dilatational surface viscosities. This comparison shows the small but measurable effect of the surface viscous stresses for sufficiently small spatiotemporal distances from the breakup point, and allows to establish upper bounds for the values of the shear and dilatational viscosities.

Methods: Post-implant hypotensive efficacy was evaluated by using a numerical model and a computational fluid dynamics simulation. Three different devices were compared: the XEN 45 stent (tube diameter, 45 μm), the XEN 63 stent (63 μm) and the PreserFlo microshunt (70 μm).

We studied experimentally the breakup of liquid bridges made of aqueous solutions of Poly(acrylic acid) between two separating solid surfaces with freely moving contact lines. For polymer concentrations higher than a certain threshold (~30 ppm), the contact line on the surface with the highest receding contact angle fully retracts before the liquid bridge capillary breakup takes place at its neck. This means that all the liquid remains attached to the opposing surface when the surfaces are separated.

Here, we intend to review this field from a global perspective by considering and linking the two sides of the problem. First, we present the theoretical model used to study interfacial flows arising in droplet-based microfluidics, paying attention to three elements commonly present in applications: viscoelasticity, electric fields and surfactants.

The aim of this study was to analyse the socio-demographic, clinical and assistential features of the demand for specialist mental health attention. A descriptive and analytical study was conducted in the period 2011-2015 (N = 1252).

We propose a method to measure the interfacial tension characterizing the interface between two immiscible liquids of practically the same density. In this method, a cylindrical liquid bridge made of one the liquids is vibrated laterally inside a tank filled with the other. The first resonance frequency is determined and equated to the first eigenfrequency of the m=1 linear mode to infer the interfacial tension value.

In the latter case, we consider two molecular weights: 10 5 g/mol (PEO100K) and 2 × 10 6 g/mol (PEO2M). The results allow us to measure with high reproducibility extensional relaxation times of the order of 10 μ s.

We consider both the case where the interface does not touch the solid surfaces and that in which the jet adheres to them with a contact angle slightly smaller than 180^{∘}. Given an arbitrary set of values of the governing parameters, the fully developed (parallel) two-dimensional basic flow is calculated and then the growth rate of the dominant perturbation mode is determined as a function of the wave number.

For this purpose, we numerically integrate the leaky-dielectric model together with the Oldroyd-B constitutive relationship and calculate both the base flow and linear eigenmodes characterizing its stability as a function of the governing parameters. We describe the effect of the polymeric stresses on both the cone-jet mode and the minimum flow rate stability limit.

We study numerically the influence of an iris-fixed phakic intraocular lens (PIOL) on the transport of nutrients by the aqueous humor across a realistic model of the human eye. The Boussinesq equations are solved to calculate the velocity field both in the anterior and posterior chambers. The transport of the nutrient is modeled as that of a passive scalar convected by that velocity field and diffused by the concentration gradient.

Methods: By computational fluid dynamics simulation, AH flow was modelled through a peripheral iridotomy (PI) or central lens hole (both 360 μm) in the presence of an Artiflex or ICL lens, respectively. The impacts of AH flow were then determined in terms of wall shear stress (WSS) produced on the endothelium or crystalline lens.
Background: Fractional flow reverse (FFR) is the gold standard assessment of the hemodynamic significance of coronary stenoses. However, it requires the catheterization of the coronary artery to determine the pressure waveforms proximal and distal to the stenosis. On the contrary, computational fluid dynamics enables the calculation of the FFR value from relatively non-invasive computed tomography angiography (CTA).
View Article and Find Full Text PDFAs is well known, confined fluid systems subject to forced vibrations produce mean flows, called in this context streaming flows. These mean flows promote an overall mass transport in the fluid that has consequences in the transport of passive scalars and surfactants, when these are present in a fluid interface. Such transport causes surfactant concentration inhomogeneities that are to be counterbalanced by Marangoni elasticity.

Previous theoretical studies have indicated that liquid bridges close to the Plateau-Rayleigh instability limit can be stabilized when the upper supporting disk vibrates at a very high frequency and with a very small amplitude. The major effect of the vibration-induced pressure field is to straighten the liquid bridge free surface to compensate for the deformation caused by gravity. As a consequence, the apparent Bond number decreases and the maximum liquid bridge length increases.

In this paper, we present a numerical study of the pulsatile transitional flow crossing a severe real stenosis located right in front of the bifurcation between the right subclavian and right common carotid arteries. The simulation allows one to determine relevant features of this subject-specific flow, such as the pressure waves in the right subclavian and right common carotid arteries. We explain the subclavian steal syndrome suffered by the patient in terms of the drastic pressure drop in the right subclavian artery.

Filament stretching and capillary breakup rheometers have been developed to characterize the extensional properties of polymeric solutions, mostly for high-viscosity fluids. However, for low concentration polymer solutions, the measurements are difficult using available devices, in terms of the minimum viscosity and relaxation times that can be measured accurately.
