Background: The complex aetiology of type 1 diabetes (T1D), characterised by a detrimental cross-talk between the immune system and insulin-producing beta cells, has hindered the development of effective disease-modifying therapies. The discovery that the pharmacological activation of LRH-1/NR5A2 can reverse hyperglycaemia in mouse models of T1D by attenuating the autoimmune attack coupled to beta cell survival/regeneration prompted us to investigate whether immune tolerisation could be translated to individuals with T1D by LRH-1/NR5A2 activation and improve islet survival.

Methods: Peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) were isolated from individuals with and without T1D and derived into various immune cells, including macrophages and dendritic cells.

Article Synopsis
  • Young athletes (≤18 years) face a high risk of ACL graft failure, with current studies indicating significant variation in failure rates among different autograft types used for reconstruction.
  • A systematic review analyzed 24 studies and found that hamstring tendon (HT) autografts had the highest failure rate at 11.8%, while bone-patellar tendon-bone (BPTB) and quadriceps tendon (QT) had lower failure rates at 7.9% and 2.7%, respectively.
  • The findings suggest that while HT is commonly used, BPTB and QT may be more effective options for reducing reinjury risk in young athletes undergoing ACL reconstruction.

Background: The concept of amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) was developed to identify patients at an initial stage of Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, some patients with aMCI do not present biomarkers of amyloid pathology or neuronal injury.

Objective: To know the natural history of amyloid-negative and neurodegeneration-negative patients with aMCI, namely to ascertain: 1) whether these patients remain cognitively stable or they present a slow decline in neuropsychological tests; 2) whether the memory complaints subside with the apparently benign clinical course of the disorder or if they persist along the time.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates the use of all-soft tissue quadriceps tendon (ASTQT) autografts for ACL reconstruction in young athletes, focusing on return-to-sport (RTS) rates and reinjury rates.
  • - A total of 656 patients aged 14-22 underwent primary ACLR, with 395 responding to a follow-up survey, revealing high RTS rates of 87.7% for males and 82.8% for females, and low revision rates.
  • - The findings suggest that ASTQT autografts lead to favorable outcomes in ACLR, with similar rates of subsequent ACL injuries for both genders, emphasizing the graft's utility in young athletes.

Several protected troglobitic invertebrate species are known to occur in caves on Joint Base San Antonio-Camp Bullis, Bexar County, Texas, United States. The United States Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) identified red-imported fire ant Solenopsis invicta (hereafter RIFA) (Buren 1972) as the primary threat to cave species' nutrient sources, cave crickets, Ceuthophilus secretus (Scudder 1894). Per the service's recommendations, Joint Base San Antonio-Camp Bullis currently implements boiling water mound injections with digging for RIFA control.

SummaryRhabdomyolysis is characterised by muscle breakdown which causes myoglobin light chain release and can result in renal injury. While some of the most common causes of rhabdomyolysis are trauma related, others include toxins, autoimmune processes or viral aetiologies. We present the case of a 20s-year-old man, with no significant medical history, who presented to the emergency department with a 1-week history of weakness, myalgias, nausea, vomiting and subjective fevers.

The objective of the present study was to examine the effect of acute neuromuscular fatigue on unilateral jump performance and inter-limb asymmetries. Thirty elite youth female team sport athletes (age: U-14 to U-18) performed the Unilateral Countermovement Jump (UCJ) and the Unilateral Drop Jump (UDJ) (18-cm box) tests before and approximately 10 minutes after the 30-15 intermittent fitness test (30-15 IFT). A paired samples t-test showed significant reductions in UCJ jump height in the right leg after the 30-15 IFT (p = 0.

UDP-glucuronosyltransferases (UGTs) are phase II drug metabolizing enzymes that play important roles in the detoxification of endogenous and exogenous substrates. The 22 human UGTs belong to four families (UGT1, UGT2, UGT3, and UGT8) and differ in their expression, substrate specificity, UDP-sugar preference, and physiological functions. Differential expression/activity of the UGTs contributes to interperson variability in drug responses and toxicity, hormone homeostasis, and disease/cancer risks.

Helminths, in particular eyeworms (Oxyspirura petrowi) and cecal worms (Aulonocephalus pennula), may be a factor influencing northern bobwhite (Colinus virginianus) populations in Texas. Previous research has shown a discrepancy in helminth infections between the Rolling Plains and Rio Grande Plains of Texas, US, potentially caused by differences in intermediate host distribution and abundance. We explored an alternative hypothesis centered on plant diversity, given that many plants possess phytochemicals with anthelmintic properties.

Context: Middle school (MS) parents may benefit from education supporting timely concussion identification and care-seeking in their young children (aged approximately 10 to 15 years). However, such education may not consider individual needs and different social context factors, including lower socioeconomic status, disadvantaged social determinants of health, and different racial and ethnic backgrounds.

Objectives: To examine the relationship between social context factors and concussion knowledge, attitudes, and communication in MS parents and to explore the possible role of race and ethnicity (Black or White) as an effect measure modifier.

How ubiquitous circadian clocks orchestrate tissue-specific outputs is not well understood. Pancreatic β cell-autonomous clocks attune insulin secretion to daily energy cycles, and desynchrony from genetic or behavioral disruptions raises type 2 diabetes risk. We show that the transcription factor DEC1, a clock component induced in adult β cells, coordinates their glucose responsiveness by synchronizing energy metabolism and secretory gene oscillations.
