Entamoeba histolytica programmed cell death (PCD) induced by G418 is characterized by the release of important amounts of intracellular calcium from reservoirs. Nevertheless, no typical caspases have been detected in the parasite, the PCD phenotype is inhibited by the cysteine protease inhibitor E-64. These results strongly suggest that Ca(2+)-dependent proteases could be involved in PCD.

However, cases of hemorrhagic dengue have been reported during the course of primary infections. We propose that the dengue virus, specifically the envelope glycoprotein can participate directly in the installation of the hemorrhagic phenomenon by means of the binding and activation of plasminogen (PLG) as condition previous to the development of the fibrinolytic process.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFThe authors report a case of a 54-year-old white male with a coronary fistula associated with double mitral valve disease. The patient was studied by invasive and non-invasive cardiac methods including coronary angiogram in order to reach the correct diagnosis and to define the successful surgical treatment that included the closure of the fistula, partial resection of the left atrium and insertion of a mechanical mitral valve prosthesis. It is concluded that this case represents a very rare association between coronary fistula and double mitral valve disease.
