Aims: There is evidence that prior lumbar fusion increases the risk of dislocation and revision after total hip arthroplasty (THA). The relationship between prior lumbar fusion and the effect of femoral head diameter on THA dislocation has not been investigated. We examined the relationship between prior lumbar fusion or discectomy and the risk of dislocation or revision after THA.

Carbon 11-labeled pittsburgh compound B positron emission tomographic amyloid imaging in patients with APP locus duplication.

Objective: To investigate amyloid accumulation by carbon 11-labeled Pittsburgh Compound B (11C-PiB) in hereditary cerebral amyloid angiopathy and APP locus duplication.

Design, Setting, And Patients: Positron emission tomography with 11C-PiB and magnetic resonance imaging were performed for 2 patients, 49-year-old and 60-year-old siblings with APP locus duplication, with hereditary Alzheimer disease and cerebral amyloid angiopathy.

Main Outcome Measure: Change in 11C-PiB uptake.

Intracerebral hemorrhage occasionally affects patients with AD.

Range in javelin throwing is determined by the release parameters and aerodynamic factors. The current study was designed to investigate the effects of release speed, release angle and uncorrected angle of attack measured at the foul line on the official javelin throwing result. The data were collected in international competitions for 26 elite male and 15 elite female javelin throwers (total 248 throws).

Effects of 12-week shooting training and mode of feedback on shooting scores among novice shooters.

The mode of feedback has been shown to have an effect on motor skill learning. This study investigated effects of an intensive 12-week shooting training period, and of the mode of feedback on scores in standing and running target shooting among 30 novices with limited shooting experience. They were divided into one control (no training) and three training groups.

Auditory P300 event related potential in minor ischemic stroke.

Objective: Various degenerative cerebral diseases and even depression may cause abnormalities of the cognitive event related potentials (ERPs). We conducted the present study to elucidate the effects of ischemic stroke on the P300 ERP component.

Material And Methods: We recorded the P300 wave using an auditory oddball paradigm in 38 consecutive brain infarct patients with mild neurological deficits at 3 and 12 months post-stroke, and in 29 healthy control subjects.

Warm underwater water-jet massage improves recovery from intense physical exercise.

The effects of warm underwater water-jet massage on neuromuscular functioning, selected biochemical parameters (serum creatine kinase, lactic dehydrogenase, serum carbonic anhydrase, myoglobin, urine urea and creatinine) and muscle soreness were studied among 14 junior track and field athletes. Each subject spent, in a randomized order, two identical training weeks engaged in five strength/power training sessions lasting 3 days. The training weeks differed from each other only in respect of underwater water-jet massage treatments.

Biomechanical effects of fatigue during continuous hurdle jumping.

Jumping drills that include several successive take-offs are popular in many sports events. An understanding of the effects of fatigue on biomechanical parameters during continuous jumping drills is important when selecting drills and their durations for sports training. In the present study, effects of continuous hurdle jumping on myoelectrical (EMG) activity, ground reaction forces, vertical movements of the body's centre of mass and knee joint angle kinematics were studied among eight male volleyball players (age 20-26 years).

Early neuropsychological outcome after carotid endarterectomy.

30 patients with a history of transient ischemic attacks (TIA) and 16 patients with cerebral infarcts were evaluated neuropsychologically 1-3 days before carotid endarterectomy, due to hemodynamically significant carotid artery stenosis, and again 2 weeks and 2 months after operation. Preoperatively, there were no differences between the groups, but postoperatively the neuropsychological outcome of the TIA patients was better than that of the infarction patients. Consequently, carotid endarterectomy patients cannot be studied as one group in neuropsychological examinations but various subgroups should be dealt with separately.

Long-term cerebral outcome after open-heart surgery. A five-year neuropsychological follow-up study.

A prospective 5 years' neuropsychological, neurological, cardiological and electroencephalographical follow-up study was carried out in 44 patients who had undergone open-heart surgery for valve replacement. A distinct interrelationship was found between the clinical outcome immediately after operation and the neuropsychological long-term course despite the rapid recovery of occasional clinical disorders related to operative procedures. In fact, the psychometric performance scores of those who did not develop clinical signs of cerebral dysfunction induced in operation showed a significant difference only years after operation.
