  • Urinary incontinence (UI) affects approximately 9% of the global population and is more common among the elderly, particularly those in nursing homes, yet its social implications are not well studied.
  • A qualitative study with 41 participants across seven focus groups reveals that both caregivers and the general public view UI as a taboo topic, often associated with embarrassment, shame, and misunderstanding, leading to social stigma.
  • Despite the negative perceptions, the study also notes that some view UI as an opportunity for empowerment for elderly residents, as they can choose their own protection methods, suggesting a need for better education and awareness about this health issue.
