Editorial Perspective: The mental health impact of school closures during the COVID-19 pandemic.

School closures were one of the earlier actions taken as the world tried to contain the COVID-19 outbreak, a decision impacting nearly three-fourths of the learners worldwide. One year into the pandemic, over 200 million students still faced disruptions to their education. Nearing the end of another academic year that has occurred entirely during the pandemic, many schools remained fully or partially closed for in-person education, altering routines and representing potential hardships to the next generation and their families.

Impact of a Global Child Mental Health Observership Program: Participant Evaluation, Perceptions, and Outcomes.

Objective: The authors describe the participant outcomes and global impact of a structured international observership program in child and adolescent mental health (CAMH) at a United States (US) pediatric academic center.

Methods: The quality improvement phase of the observership program was conducted for 2 years and included 12 participants from 9 different countries. Observers utilized a question guide to describe their clinical and academic experiences in the US in relation to their countries.

Prevalence, Patterns, and Correlates of Pain in Medically Hospitalized Pediatric Patients With Somatic Symptom and Related Disorders.

Background: Somatic symptom and related disorders (SSRDs) and pain are highly comorbid in the pediatric population. Little is known about the prevalence of pain and factors that may predispose and perpetuate pain in hospitalized youth with SSRD.

Objective: To describe the prevalence of pain and widespread pain symptoms in hospitalized youth with SSRD and describe differences between patients who endorsed limited (1-4 sites) versus widespread (5-8 sites) pain.

Integrated Behavioral Health Care in Pediatric Subspecialty Clinics.

Comorbid behavioral and physical health conditions are accompanied by troubling symptom burden, functional impairment, and treatment complexity. Pediatric subspecialty care clinics offer an opportunity for the implementation of integrated behavioral health (BH) care models that promote resiliency. This article reviews integrated BH care in oncology, palliative care, pain, neuropsychiatry, cystic fibrosis, and transplantation.
