Background: Increased awareness of the world's problematic growing health care expenditure and health care shortages requires sustainable use of available resources. To promote cultural changes in medical mindsets, societies representing medical specialties have developed new Choosing Wisely strategies. OPMD is among the few triplet repeat diseases/ polyalanine (poly(A)) expansion diseases for which the function of the mutated gene is quite well established. The disease is characterised by slowly progressive bilateral ptosis, dysphagia and proximal limb weakness, appearing after the age of 40 years.

These facts and the complexity of factors influencing the transmission of malaria render their interpretation difficult.
