The prefoldin complex is a heterohexameric, evolutionarily conserved co-chaperone that assists in folding of polypeptides downstream of the protein translation machinery. Loss of prefoldin function leads to impaired solubility of cellular proteins. The degradation of proteins by the proteasome is an integral part of protein homeostasis.

Background: Prefoldin is an evolutionarily conserved co-chaperone of the tailless complex polypeptide 1 ring complex (TRiC)/chaperonin containing tailless complex 1 (CCT). The prefoldin complex consists of six subunits that are known to transfer newly produced cytoskeletal proteins to TRiC/CCT for folding polypeptides. Prefoldin function was recently linked to the maintenance of protein homeostasis, suggesting a more general function of the co-chaperone during cellular stress conditions.

Phenotypic and genotypic resistance to benzalkonium chloride (BC), cadmium and arsenic was tested (by susceptibility assays and molecular methods) in 287 Listeria monocytogenes strains isolated from fish and fish products, and food-producing factories in Poland. Overall, 40% of the isolates were resistant to BC, 56% to cadmium and 41% to arsenic (57% displayed resistance to more than one of the tested compounds). Among BC-resistant isolates, the most commonly detected resistance determinant was the qacH gene (83%).

Distribution of amino acid substitutions in the quinolone resistance-determining region (QRDR) of gyrA, gyrB, parC, parE and determinants of plasmid-mediated quinolone resistance (PMQR) were investigated among quinolone-resistant Salmonella spp. strains isolated from retail food in Poland in the years 2008-2013. Ten different amino acid substitutions were identified in QRDRs.
