Article Synopsis
  • - Over 30% of Germans face iodine deficiency, leading to health issues like goiter, and the economic impact of this deficiency is not well-established.
  • - A comprehensive cost analysis was conducted for various treatments and productivity losses in 2018, revealing that costs could be high for different IDDs, including over €14,000 annually for intellectual disability cases.
  • - Implementing universal salt iodization might save costs by preventing a certain number of IDD cases, but a thorough health-economic evaluation is necessary before making recommendations.

Introduction: Evidence on long-term effectiveness and cost effectiveness of treatment sequences for multiple myeloma (MM) is sparse. We used published data and country-specific data to assess the cost effectiveness of four-line treatment sequences for elderly transplant-ineligible patients with MM in Serbia.

Method: We developed a Markov cohort model to compare long-term effectiveness and cost effectiveness of five sequential MM treatment alternatives from the perspective of the national healthcare provider.

Although substantial progress has been made in recent decades in eliminating iodine deficiency, iodine deficiency disorders (IDDs) are still prevalent in European countries. Challenges include ineffective public health programs and discontinuation of IDD prevention. However, the barriers against the implementation and continuation of prevention and monitoring of IDD remain unclear.

Iodine deficiency is one of the most prevalent causes of intellectual disability and can lead to impaired thyroid function and other iodine deficiency disorders (IDDs). Despite progress made on eradicating iodine deficiency in the last decades in Europe, IDDs are still prevalent. Currently, evidence-based information on the benefit/harm balance of IDD prevention in Europe is lacking.

Prevention and treatment of iodine deficiency-related diseases remain an important public health challenge. Iodine deficiency can have severe health consequences, such as cretinism, goiter, or other thyroid disorders, and it has economic implications. Our aim was to give an overview of studies applying decision-analytic modeling to evaluate the effectiveness and/or cost-effectiveness of iodine deficiency-related prevention strategies or treatments related to thyroid disorders.

Major rivers in developing and emerging countries suffer increasingly of severe degradation of water quality. The current study uses a mathematical Material Flow Analysis (MMFA) as a complementary approach to address the degradation of river water quality due to nutrient pollution in the Thachin River Basin in Central Thailand. This paper gives an overview of the origins and flow paths of the various point- and non-point pollution sources in the Thachin River Basin (in terms of nitrogen and phosphorus) and quantifies their relative importance within the system.

Inadequacy and poor quality of water supply for domestic purposes is increasingly becoming a concern in rural catchments of the Middle Mountains of Nepal. Water quantity is an issue in pocket areas of these catchments, while water quality is subject to concern in most of the water sources. Microbiological contamination in particular poses a risk to human health.
