Embryo transfer offers great advantages to South American camelid farmers to reach their breeding goals but the technology still plays a relatively minor role in comparison to other domestic farm animals like cattle. The aim of the present study was to analyse a data set of 5547 single or multiple ovulation embryo transfers performed in commercial alpaca farms in Australia to determine the factors that influence number and quality of embryos produced, embryo transfer success (percentage of crias born) and gestation length following transfer. Logistic binary regression identified the variables day of flushing after mating, embryo diameter, embryo quality, day of transfer after GnRH, and the age of the recipient to have significant impact on the outcome measure embryo transfer success.

During a 12-month longitudinal study, bulk-tank milk was collected from organic (n=17) and conventional (n=19) dairy farms in the UK. Milk samples were analysed for vitamin A (retinol), vitamin E (alpha-tocopherol) and beta-carotene content. The farming system type, herd production level and nutritional factors affecting the milk fat vitamin content were investigated by use of mixed model analyses.

A subjective cow cleanliness scoring system was validated and used to assess the cleanliness score of dairy cows at different times in the year. A longitudinal study followed a number of farms from summer to winter, and a larger, cross-sectional study assessed a greater number of farms during the housed winter period. The scoring system was demonstrated to be both a repeatable and practical technique to use on-farm and showed that cows become dirtier in the transition from summer grazing to winter housing.

In post-partum anestrous beef cows suckling calves, neither the choice of hormonal regime to ensure the presence of a healthy dominant follicle at the end of a progestagen treatment nor the optimum hormone to induce estrus and ovulation is clear. Twenty-eight beef cows, in good body condition, 25-30 days post-partum, were assigned to one of four treatments: (i) 3mg norgestomet (N) implant with 5mg estradiol valerate (EDV) and 3mg N injection at the time of insertion (Crestar) for 5 days followed by 600 IU eCG at the time of implant removal; (ii) Crestar for 5 days as in (i) followed by 0.75 mg estradiol benzoate (EDB) 24h later; (iii) Crestar for 9 days followed by 600 IU eCG at the time of implant removal; and (iv) Crestar for 9 days followed by 0.
