As systemic therapies, alongside radiation, for cancer treatment continue to evolve, the radiation oncology community is facing an increasing number of reirradiation (re-RT) of tumor sites subject to recurrences. There are multiple factors associated with choosing re-RT as a treatment option for a previously irradiated site. The factors include the site of previous radiotherapy (RT), the current extent of the disease, the nature of recurrence, the technique used for previous irradiation, and the previous RT details including dose and dose fractionation.

Article Synopsis
  • Cervical cancer in India is highly prevalent with a low average age of recurrence, typically treated with concurrent chemoradiotherapy, but options diminish if the cancer returns.
  • The review identifies three categories of prognostic factors: disease-related (tumor characteristics), patient-related (overall health and demographics), and treatment-related (treatment techniques and quality assurance).
  • Key significant factors influencing prognosis include tumor size, stage, nodal status, and nutritional status, while the treatment delivery techniques for radiation therapy were found to be less impactful.
