Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is linked to an elevated risk of malnutrition and sarcopenia, contributing to the intricate network of CKD-related metabolic disorders. Adipokines and myokines are markers and effectors of sarcopenia and nutritional status. The aim of this study was to assess whether the adipokine-myokine signature in patients on kidney replacement therapy could help identify malnutrition and sarcopenia.

This study aimed to review recent scientific studies on the use of RPM in patients treated with APD and based on extracted relevant data assess possible clinical implications and potential economic value of introducing such a system into practice in Poland.
Methods: A systematic literature review was performed in the MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Cochrane databases.
The presented study aims to assess the mechanical behaviour of the anterior abdominal wall based on an in vivo experiment on humans. Full-field measurement of abdominal wall displacement during changes of intra-abdominal pressure is performed using a digital image correlation (DIC) system. Continuous measurement in time enables the observation of changes in the strain field during breathing.

Unlabelled: Vaccination against COVID-19 in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) on replacement therapy and kidney transplant recipients (KTRs) is particularly important due to the high mortality rate. Here, we tested the local and systemic immunity to the novel Pfizer BioNTech (BNT162b2) messenger RNA (mRNA) in ESRD, KTR patients, and healthy individuals (150 subjects). The ESRD group was divided into: hemodialysis (HD) and peritoneal dialysis (PD).

At the end-of-life care, both oral and subcutaneous drug delivery very often are not attainable. The increasing number of patients in terminal stage of chronic diseases forced us to look for the alternative ways of administration of pain treatment.

This was a prospective, longitudinal study in which we analyzed the kinetics of antibodies up to six months after a two-dose vaccination (first protocol) in infection-naïve dialysis patients (IN-Ds), previously infected dialysis patients (PI-Ds) and subjects without chronic kidney disease (the controls), as well as their humoral response to the third dose of the same mRNA vaccine (second protocol). The respective reduction in antibody titer after 3 and 6 months by 82.

A better mechanical understanding of a human abdominal wall and recognition of its material properties is required to find mechanically compatible surgical meshes to significantly improve the treatment of ventral hernias. A non-invasive methodology, based on in vivo optical measurements is proposed to determine strains of abdominal wall corresponding to a known intraabdominal pressure.

The aim of this multicentre study was to examine epidemiology, treatment and outcomes of PD-related infections in Poland as well as practice patterns for prevention of these complications in the context of current ISPD recommendations.
Methods: A survey on PD practices in relation to infectious complications was conducted in 11 large Polish PD centres.
Cardiovascular (CVS) morbidity and mortality in the peritoneal dialysis patients (PD) is 10-30-fold higher than in the general population. A relatively low level of adiponectin and a higher level of leptin are important predictors of vascular complications as well as CVS events in PD patients. The asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA), an endogenous inhibitor of nitric oxide synthase, is an important risk factor of CVS morbidity and mortality.

The study group consisted of 129 patients with metastatic lung cancer patients treated between May 2010 and December 2015 in two centres. The knowledge of cancer and their lifestyle was rated by method of diagnostic survey, using the Behavioral Health Inventory IZZ by Prof.

It is assumed that an active form of vitamin B1, thiamin diphosphate (ThDP), is responsible for this protective effect. However, it has never been shown whether ThDP, a compound known not to cross cellular membranes, is actually detectable in human peritoneal effluent.

We provide an overview of the data available on vitamin requirements, dietary intake, dialysis related losses, metabolism and the benefits of supplementation. We also summarise the current recommendations concerning the supplementation of vitamins in peritoneal dialysis and discuss the safety of an administration of vitamins in pharmacological doses.

However, target Hb levels in dialysis patients are set constant regardless of the patient's sex. The aim of this study was to evaluate Hb concentration and the use of erythropoiesis-stimulating agents (ESA) in peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients taking gender and dialysis adequacy into account.

It has been suggested that the peritoneal membrane might be better preserved by using biocompatible solutions, including cancer antigetn 125 (CA125). This prospective, open-label, multicentre, randomized, controlled, cross-over phase IV study compared the in vivo biocompatibility of a neutral-pH, low-GDP peritoneal dialysis (PD) solution (balance) with a cPDF in automated PD (APD) patients.

Background: Volunteers working in hospice and palliative care facilities in Poland undertake various activities which are performed in accordance with legal regulations and the individual policies of each hospice. The aim of this study was to explore the roles and training of volunteers working in hospice and palliative care settings.
Methods: A cross-sectional survey was carried out that investigated the services performed by volunteers and their preparation for work within residential hospices.
This study focused on pharmacoeconomic issues affecting pharmacists in residential hospices in Poland. We conducted a questionnaire survey among hospice pharmacists and their managers. The results revealed that the amount of money received from the National Health Fund is insufficient for drug purchasing and therefore hospices often raise additional funds from external sources.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFBackground: Palliative care requires the collaborative efforts of an interdisciplinary team, and as such a range of health professionals should be involved in supporting patients with life-threatening diseases. As a part of this therapeutic network, pharmacists at residential hospices should be thoroughly involved in care, cooperate with other medical staff and perform pharmaceutical services in order to deliver safe and efficient pharmacotherapy.
Aim: To provide an overview of the current state of pharmacy practice at Polish residential hospices.
Malnutrition remains one of the major predictors of mortality in peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients. The aim of the study was to evaluate the nutritional status of prevalent PD patients, and to determine the best predictors of outcome among anthropometric and laboratory indices of nutrition. The study included 106 prevalent PD patients from a single university-based unit.

Background: Biocompatible fluids for peritoneal dialysis (PD) have been introduced to improve dialysis and patient outcome in end-stage renal disease. However, their impact on hydration status (HS), residual renal function (RRF), and dialysis adequacy has been a matter of debate. The aim of the study was to evaluate the influence of a biocompatible dialysis fluid on the HS of prevalent PD patients.
Purpose: When choosing a dialysis option for ADPKD patients, peritoneal dialysis (PD) is often discouraged, due to its potential drawbacks: risk of abdominal hernias and dialysis fluid leaks, risk of peritonitis and insufficient dialysis adequacy. The present study was designed to compare the outcomes and dialysis efficacy in ADPKD patients treated with PD, in comparison with non-ADPKD subjects.
Methods: This study was a retrospective analysis of the data from the national PD registry in which 106 ADPKD and 1606 non-ADPKD incident PD patients were evaluated.
The term necrotizing fasciitis /NF/ was probably first described by Jones in 1871 as "hospital gangrene". NF, with its fast spreading from the local infection to massive necrosis of the underlying tissues, ie. superficial fascia and subcutaneous layers, is a potentially fatal disease, unless diagnosed early and properly treated.

However, cultural issues and language peculiarities can affect CRF assessment
Objectives: The main aims of this study were to evaluate the psychometric properties of the Polish version of the Multidimensional Fatigue Inventory-20 (MFI-20) and to deliver to clinicians a multidimensional tool for CRF assessment in Polish-speaking patients with cancer.
Methods: After forward-backward translation procedures, the Polish version of MFI-20 was administered to 340 cancer patients.
